Well, it's not an easy fix.I'm curious, How would you "fix" it?
First of all, free-market capitalism and the whole American "me-first, it's my god-damn constitutional right!" mentality is crippling to any sort of social responsibility to the rest of mankind or to the planet as a whole. Gas is running out? Who cares, as long as I can drive my Hummer! Anti-smoking bylaw? F*** you! This property here is MINE, nobody else's, MINE, and I'll do with it what I wish! I don't care if I'm pumping toxins into the bloodstream of everyone who walks by whether they want it or not, it's what I wanna do! How about massive corporations who lay off thousands of workers, decimating small resource-based towns so that their stock will go up 3%?
All I'm saying is that communism is only a bad word because the American government says it is. Did you know that right now, Cuba is the only country in the world that is considered to be "sustainable"? That is, maintaining a high standard of living and not consuming more than they can produce?
Okay, so maybe not communism. But some socialistic tendencies sure couldn't hurt. It's just never going to happen, because a bunch of hypocritical aristocrats 250 years ago wrote that "all men are created equal" and then proceeded to allow only 10% of the population to vote.
The entire system that the United States was built on is flawed, but nobody benefiting from the system will ever admit it.
