Xbox Live has always had a charge. 8 bucks a month, 20 bucks for 3 months, or 50 for a year, for the gold account. The Silver is free but you can't play online. Since multiplayer has never appealed to me, I'm happy with silver.
Besides, the pricing for the gold accounts is much better than the deals with cable companies that offer high speed net service.
