Yeah, this whole side of it makes the console worth the money for me even if there were no next gen games. A bit like getting a new pc. Obviously the next generation of games over the next 7 or so years is a massive bonus!
yep.
It also makes the transition to next gen smoother and more seamless, especially at (and shortly after) launch when the new game offerings may not be that robust or less than ideal.
I remember at PS4 launch, I bought some titles like Killzone and AC Black Flag, not because I was particularly interested in those games, but because I felt I needed to buy something to play on the new system. If the PS4 had been BC with PS3 games, I could have just sold my PS3, but keep my PS3 library to play (enhanced) on the new system. And then I would have felt less forced to buy launch PS4 titles I didn't really want to buy.
I always felt I got into the PS4/X1 gen too early, and that I should have waited another year, because that's when more games I was actually interested in starting coming out. That first year (and the first few months especially), I didn't really feel like I got much out of my PS4. And the X1 wasn't really an option for me at launch, because it was $100 more expensive and came force bundled with that stupid Kinect camera.
I also remember how on my 360, I could play certain OG Xbox games like KOTOR, and on my PS3, I could play PS1 games (too bad PS2 BC was removed). It was certainly a nice feature to have on those consoles.
so, it's a good thing that both new consoles this gen will have BC at launch, and MS has the leg up in this area. If the PS5 really is BC with only a handful of top PS4 games at launch, while Series X launches with BC with practically every game playable on X1, then that could be a factor to make me switch to Series X instead of PS5.
hopefully Sony will shed more light on their BC approach in the coming months, starting next Thursday.
BC isn't necessarily a must-have feature for me, but it's certainly a nice-to-have feature. and the more robust it is, the better. Plus, it's always fun going to the used game stores and hunting down those retro game finds. It just would be nice to be able to play those retro games on the current gen console!
