So i was getting ready to splurge and buy the old discontinued box set of Xena warrior princess, when i read both season 1 of Xena and Hercules were re-released on April 20th. They compressed the episodes to less discs and take up far less space.

I was wondering if any of you have bought them? And if so... which version is better? I'm trying to weigh the pro's and cons.

NEW:

CONS:
so far i've heard the re-release is in dolby 2.0 rather then 5.0 surround sound, and has some compression issues near the last few discs. They sell for about $20 on amazon. not confirmed, but i've heard no bonus features.

PROS: Saves space alot of dvd shelf space.

once complete $120 (without shipping and tax)

OLD:

CONS:
it's older packaging, very bulky and the box set sells for about $140

PROS: buy it all at once instead of waiting a while, bonus features

I want to hear more about weather or not there's bonus features... and how the quality is on the new discs, because so far im thinking the old box set is better.

All of the seasons combined for each show will be $120? Hmm...

I don't think there's any extras on the new releases{don't quote me on that though}. I would go with the old releases. It's only $20 more.

sounds like what i'm gonna do... i just really liked the idea of space saving, just not willing to sacrafice quality for it, and want the most bang out of my buck

ya the new ones dont have special features like the original sets do. So it would be better to get the originals if you could.

yeah. just ordered the box set (which came with a bonus box for all 6) + the 10 year anniversary. (which is just a collection of episodes i think?) paid like $136

I got the first season of Xena at wal-mart for $20.
The old one was VERY poor quality when it came to picture. It was grainy, but not in a good way. I haven't really watched any of it, but I popped the first DVD in and watched part of the first episode to see how it looked, and it looks WAY better.
The only bad thing about the first few seasons are they look like crap, but once you hit the fourth season, they look gorgeous, and seasons five and six are in letterbox, and it makes them look even better.

well, from the reviews i've read, season one looks like crap anyway because of the camera they used. The first 2 discs in the rerelease look great, but when you get to the 4th and beyond, aparently they compressed the videos to fit on less discs and the quality dives down.

yeah i saw the Xena dvds today at walmart for 20 bucks. i was surprised they released them.

I've never watched wither show, but i'm definitely interested in the re-releases.

So i just recently learned that Hercules had 5 tv movies prior to his tv show...

-Hercules and the Amazon Women
-Hercules and the Lost Kingdom
-Hercules and the Circle of Fire
-Hercules in the Underworld
-Hercules in the Maze of the Minotaur

are any of these on DVD or included in any of the TV show seasons?

As far as I know they are not included in the set. Which is a major let down. Just checked Amazon and they are not included in the set. But either way I would just buy the Anchor Bay dvds.

i dont think amazon listed those eps for the original box set either... so ill see. i did buy the old box set of xena though. and love it! :D

I know themovies come with the original Herc boxset and looking at the reviews for the new one, someone pointed out that they didnt come with them.

ah ok, well that solves that one.

basically for those wondering... for both shows

In Price
New Release in the long run = / > Old Box set

In Space Saving
New Release > Old Box Set

In Features/Extra Content
New Release < Old Box Set

The old box sets win completely in my eyes...

I will however point out, and it could just be my ps2... but a few episodes wont play on my PS2. but they play on every other DVD player i have
