Xenoblade Developer Posts For “Urgent” And “Mass” Openings. October 16, 2015 . 6:54am

Monolith Soft recently posted “urgent” and “mass” openings for their Tokyo and Kyoto offices, possibly to work on a new Wii U or Nintendo NX title.

Xenoblade developer Monolith Soft have updated their official website’s staff recruitment page with “urgent” and “mass” recruitment for 3DCG designers.

Here’s what they have under their Tokyo office recruitment section:

  • Programmer
  • Planner
  • 3DCG Designer (Urgent!)
  • 2D Designer
  • Effect Designer
  • Motion Designer
  • Project Manager

Followed by one for the Kyoto office:

  • 3DCG Designer (Mass Recruitment!)
  • Effect Designer
  • Motion Designer

Monolith Soft’s Tokyo office is the one that’s in charge of Xenoblade titles, while their more recently opened Kyoto office is involved in the assistance of developing various Nintendo titles such as Animal Crossing and The Legend of Zelda.

That said, the positions listed as “urgent” and “mass recruitment” were recently added, so they’re likely working on something new, possibly for Wii U or Nintendo NX, that we may hear about in the near future.

Keep in mind that Xenoblade Chronicles X executive director Tetsuya Takahashi previously commented in the guidebook for the RPG that he’d like to use the experience him and Monolith Soft have obtained in the development of Xenoblade Chronicles X in order to make his next title something that is rich in story.

Xenoblades Chronicles X Scores 15% Discount Plus $15 Bonus. October 28, 2015 . 9:00pm

A rare discount and $15 bonus on Xenoblades Chronicles X before it releases later this year

Those looking to buy the upcoming Xenoblades Chronicles X probably won’t think of Dell as the retailer of choice, but this week a rare deal has cropped up worth checking out. Not only does Dell Home have the price reduced from $59.99 to $50.99 (a 15% discount), but on top of that they’re giving you a bonus $15 eGift Card. Discounts and bonuses on Nintendo Wii U pre-released games are rarely ever found, making it an impressive deal in our opinion.

The Gift Card is what you would call a Dell Promotional eGift Card. Essentially you’ll receive it via email 10-20 days after Xenoblade Chronicles X has shipped. Then you’ll have 90 days to spend the $15 at Dell Home. With the holiday season right around the corner, there should be plenty of deals to put that gift card to use during the December/January period. (Like this Wii U title, Dell also stock most AAA titles for major platforms).

Xenoblades Chronicles X releases in North America on December 4th. The game went live back in April 29th in Japan where it received nearly unanimous positive reviews. Here’s hoping nothing is loss in localization for the US market. This deal is limited to the 48 US states.

So, it seems that they removed the boob slider in character creation. Expect much nerd rage.

Because not bringing over all the 'damnit Japan" situations is unacceptable censorship.

I'm totally cool with them yanking some of the weirder things japan puts in their games. It's not like boob size is going to dramatically impact the gameplay anyway.

Xenoblade Chronicles X: My First Steps Onto Mira. November 27, 2015 . 1:00pm

Xenoblade Chronicles X doesn’t start strong. This is hardly a condemnation of the entire game; many great RPGs start slow and don’t hit their groove until hours into the experience

Xenoblade Chronicles X doesn’t start strong. This is hardly a condemnation of the entire game; many great RPGs start slow and don’t hit their groove until hours into the experience. That doesn’t change the fact that my report on the first few hours is going to be a bit of a downer though. This begins the chronicle of my time on the planet Mira.

Xenoblade Chronicles X stars a player created avatar and creating that character is where you start. As far as character creators go, it’s okay. It doesn’t allow for nearly the level of customization that other open world games sometimes do but the upside is that every character you can create fits within the aesthetic of the game. This is an anime lookin’ game and the hair/face/eye options basically leave you with creating an anime lookin’ character. The only issue I have to report with the character creation is that the guitar riff that loops in the background gets super annoying.

It’s once I had my character free to move about the world that things took a turn for the worse. Like Xenoblade Chronicles before it, Xenoblade Chronicles X is an extremely systems heavy game with an emphasis on exploration. There are BLADE points to collect, XP points towards universal level ups, classes to level up, faction rankings, battle points that are allocated to leveling skills and arts separately, three different tiers of quests… it’s an intimidating network of interconnected systems.

Xenoblade was a fairly linear game in that the player moved through the large zones in a fixed order and the game was able to introduce each new system as it became necessary for the new challenges. Xenoblade X is far less structured than that, and the player is free to wander without restriction anywhere they please. This is awesome, but it means that the game kind of needs to impart all the systems and rules at once up front so that the player can go and participate in anything and everything that’s out there. On top of that, the game is also trying to tell a story and introduce characters.

All this leads to a glut of awkward cutscenes and text dumps for the first four or five hours of the game. And even if to a certain extent this was necessary, it isn’t particularly elegantly done. Flashbacks to a cutscene you saw 10 minutes ago? It happens. Forced “choice” where both dialogue options lead to the same outcome? Used liberally. One particularly painful cutscene had two party members explaining “tyrant” enemies in fearful tones for several minutes and all I could think was, “Yeah, I played Xenoblade. There are enemies with special names who give better loot and activate special battle music. Got it.” But Elma just kept on going on.

The quests in the beginning aren’t improving things either. The joy of an open world game is stumbling across objectives and distractions organically and forging your own path. That isn’t really possible on planet Mira when you’re level 3 though. I quickly learned that it’s best to keep my head down and focus on the mission at hand as they would lead me to the few safe areas on the map with level appropriate creatures. I was forced to play this open world game like any linear JRPG, and frankly it isn’t a very good one.

The game gets better. Way better. Once you have some levels, a party, some gear, and access to the full repertoire of game systems Xenoblade Chronicle X is pretty rad. I’m looking forward to writing all about it. But we live in an era where entire single player campaigns can last five hours, and this game takes almost that long just to get going. We aren’t at Final Fantasy XIII levels of delaying gratification, but this is still a bumpy start.

Learning To Fight In Xenoblade Chronicles X. November 30, 2015 . 6:00pm

I think the most useful way to explain combat in Xenoblade Chronicles X is by comparing it to Xenoblade. In Xenoblade each character was locked into a role. Those limitations are gone in Xenoblade Chronicles X.

I think the most useful way to explain combat in Xenoblade Chronicles X is by comparing it to Xenoblade. In Xenoblade each character was locked into either melee or ranged combat and the skills they had available to them were uniquely tailored to a defined role. Sharla would always sit in the back as a ranged healer, Reyn would always stay in front as a big melee bruiser, and Shulk would always flit around the periphery of a battle to maximize his many flanking attacks. Different skill builds allowed limited customization of each unit, but the game never allowed characters to deviate far from their starting roles.

Those limitations are gone in Xenoblade Chronicles X. The player can build an avatar of any class, can recruit party members of any class combination, and every class has access to melee attacks, ranged attacks, and healing. This has upsides and a downside. I’ll cover the downside first before I gush. Classes are far more homogenous in Xenoblade Chronicles X than they used to be. The Xenoblade character Melia was never able to be anything but a ranged elemental mage character, but she had very cool elemental orb mechanics fueling her skills that made playing as her significantly unlike playing as any other character. Those more unique role based mechanics are gone, and it’s kind of a bummer.

BUT. There’s so so much that Xenoblade Chronicles X has gained. The most important upgrade is that every class can switch between melee and projectile attacking. This gives battle a sort of ebb and flow of combatants I’ve not seen in another game. Do you want to avoid giant flailing alien limbs while you try to heal? Go to ranged combat. Did an ally inflict topple status on an enemy? Rush in for bonus damage melee attacks. Do you want to use skills that give bonuses when used from behind or from the side? Get in close to minimize the radial motion necessary to circle your foe. Want to cast an aura? Check where your allies are and make sure you’re nearby be they near or far.

On top of all these factors encouraging a constantly swirling battlefield, healing has been entirely revamped. There are few skills that straight up provide HP anymore and none that can keep a party sustained through a tough battle. Healing is now achieved through the Soul Voice system. Soul Voices can get pretty involved, but it can be reductively described as a system of following orders. Party members call out for specific types of back up and if you comply promptly the party is granted some health. What characters call out for and when is a whole customizable menu, so there’s a lot of freedom to create a party setup where the offensive combos become defensive synergies as well.

Oh yes, and ALSO there’s a two layered cooldown bar on skills now. Do you want to just wait for a skill to be ready and then use it again? Fine, there’s nothing wrong with that. But if you can fight without it for long enough to get a doubled charge the eventual skill use can deal devastating secondary effects such as powering up all attacks of its type or instantly toppling the enemy.

All of these systems work together to create a dynamic battlefield where you’re always making a decision and you’re always on the move. Is it worth it to use your high level melee attack when the enemy is toppled for the bonus damage, or is it better to wait for the secondary effect later? Is it best to try and leave one of your long cooldown auras available so that you can have it ready should someone call for it, or is it better to keep as much uptime as possible on your party buffs? Should I make a party of different classes that can support each other, or should I make a party of four Full Metal Jaguars because that’s objectively the coolest class name ever? These are the sorts of decisions you make every fight and the complete freedom in party building means that you’re never stuck dealing with the same skills or combos a second longer than you want to.

And here’s the best part – I get that this reads as being a bit dense (and I haven’t even TOUCHED on Skells or Overdrive or Tension Points or targeting body parts or… you get the point) but the game doesn’t demand total optimization. This isn’t a game about kicking your butt. It is entirely up to the player how deeply they want to invest in the combat. It is profoundly satisfying to narrowly defeat a boss based on ten minutes of split second decision making, but if you want to just hit things with your skills that works most of the time too.

I would say it took me about 45 hours to really become proficient at fighting in Xenoblade Chronicles X and pick up the skills needed to play in multiplayer (more on that next time). Looking back at it now? Time well spent.
