Well, as subjective as this is...I ****ing hate G1's designs. Always have. These feel real, and look Alien.

G1 looks like Japanese crap to me.....and it is. Go figure.

There can be a middle ground between the two. I would like to have seen the bots actually look like their vehicles etc. after they transform. One advantage is that it would be simpler for us to tell them apart when they are mashing into each other. Also don't make so many of them grey; Optimus and Bumblebee are always the easiest to recognize because they have the distinct colors.
I know Bay has said that he doesn't like that but for most of his bots its looks like the inside of the car just inverted itself with the outside.

Just throwing his out there, but I seem to remember reading somewhere that in the first film, Optimus Prime cost more to render than the salaries of the entire human cast combined.

It doesn't have to be as boxy as G1. I agree, I like the look of them too, but 3000 parts is over kill, especially when you can barely see whats going on. And that was one of the things people complained about from the get-go, they looked like a jumbled mess.

I figure is movies like Avatar and Star Wars can make whole living planets completely CGI surely something can be done to get the Transformers more screen time.

There are obvious ways to get keep costs down. Less explosions? I'm actually curious to know how much of the budget actually goes into that alone.

The Transformers also rarely seem to talk while in vehicle mode.

Technically, Bumble Bee does talk when in vehicle mode. They could definitely give the Transformers much more dialogue to say in vehicle mode but it doesn't appear the writers know what to do with them when they write any of their dialogue anyways. Peter Cullen & all the other voice actors for the Transformers probably get paid very little for their participation in the movies anyways, the studio probably saves lots more money for themselves when they get away with only paying them for what dialogue they do say in Robot mode which is a shame.

They'd just look... like blocks arranged to have some biped form. :|
