The PlayStation Vita version of Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana released in Japan back in July, and Falcom announced during a general shareholders meeting today that its PS4 version will release on May 25, 2017.

The PlayStation 4 version of the game will see an overall enhancement in quality with 60fps, which should fix the noticeable frame rate drops the game suffered which was one of its biggest criticism from players of the PS Vita version.

In addition to better frame rates, the PS4 version will have higher resolution, better graphics and controls, anti-aliasing, point light, soft shadow, volumetric lighting, and more.

The PS4 version will also include new story bits that will tell us more about the female protagonist Dana’s past, as well as a new “Control War” feature, where you’ll get castaways to assault an enemy base, and other new features that will allow you to further enjoy original PS4 modes for Ys.

Here’s a look at some in-development screenshots:

And here’s a PS4 vs. PS Vita comparison:

Falcom President Talks Improvements And What Else Is New For Ys VIII On PS4. December 20, 2016 . 4:55am

Following the announcement for Ys VIII’s release in Japan for PS4, Falcom president Toshihiro Kondo shared more on improvements and what else is new in an interview with Dengeki PlayStation.

Following the announcement for Ys VIII’s release in Japan for PS4, Falcom president Toshihiro Kondo shared more on improvements and what else is new in an interview with Dengeki PlayStation. [Thanks, Hachima.]

Here are some highlights from the interview.

About the parts that are being powered up from the PS Vita version
Toshihiro Kondo: The part that had the biggest reaction was the action, and a part of us wanted to add more ways to play it as an action game.

Due capacities for the PS Vita version, Dana’s parts were a bit of an extra element, but in order to strengthen those parts we’re adding a new system called Style Change.

We’ve added an episode to Dana’s Eternia quest that involves rescuing a spirit. This spirit will also have features such as the power to transform, and a way to enhance that power.

Dana’s part will have features such as enemies that can only be defeated with certain styles, or dungeons that you can only unlock with certain styles.

As for Adol’s part, we’re adding a Control War that involves taking out dungeon enemies with not only Adol and friends, but also the Dogi crew of castaways, in something that’s like a different version of the Interception Battles. We’re also planning on adding more numbers to the Interception Battles as well.

What are the main appeals of the PS4 version?
The scenery’s beauty is particularly better. It moves smoothly in 60fps and the loading times are much faster than the PS Vita version. The Drifting Village isn’t split with a bigger screen, so you’ll get to travel seamlessly. Again, it’ll support 4K resolution.

We also plan on adding a mode that was in demand from Ys fans, so look forward to it!

At the end of the interview, Kondo mentioned that he’d like to make a sequel for Tokyo Xanadu someday.

Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana released in Japan July 21, 2016 for PlayStation Vita. The PlayStation 4 version will release in Japan on May 25, 2017.

Falcom has released new information and screenshots from the upcoming PlayStation 4 version of Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana introducing the new “Style Change” system for Dana, the action RPG’s second protagonist.

Get the information below.
■ Character
Dana (voiced by Saori Onishi)

Ys-VIII-PS4_02-02-17_001.jpg

“Fiery red hair…. Who was that person, I wonder?”
A mysterious, blue-haired girl who appears in Adol’s dreams. Contrary to her lovely appearance, her actions are often bold and imaginative, and can even surprise those around her.
She has never seen the Eresia continent, and seems to live in an area that possesses a very advanced civilization. Players will experience the life of this girl through Adol’s dreams, but…

■ New System: “Style Change”
In the PlayStation 4 version of Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana, Dana, who is playable in the Dana chapters of the game, can switch between three styles—“Iclucian,” “Gratica,” and “Luminous”—to enjoy a variety of actions.
Additionally, PlayStation 4-original dungeons with various gimmicks will appear in the Dana chapters. Players will use the unique abilities of each style to break through those gimmicks and clear the dungeon.
Iclucian (Water)
—Features
The default style and an almighty type with balanced attack power and speed. This style acquires a great amount of SP (Skill Points), and you can while excessively using skills during battle.

Ys-VIII-PS4_02-02-17_002.jpg

—Skill Attack: “Mistral Blow”
A skill that strikes surrounding enemies with a rotating slash from Dana’s crescent blade. This skill is unleashed quickly and can be easily linked from a standard attack.

Ys-VIII-PS4_02-02-17_003.jpg

—Special Abilities
Put out flames using the power of water.

Ys-VIII-PS4_02-02-17_004.jpg

Gratica (Earth)
—Features
A power type that fights with high defense power and wide attack range. This style is slow-moving, and although its attacks are roundhouse swings, it has high stun value, so when you land a hit there’s a good chance you’ll stun the enemy.

Ys-VIII-PS4_02-02-17_005.jpg

—Skill Attack: “Sourinbutou”
A great skill that, after dealing damage to surrounding enemies with a big, centrifugal force rotation, uplifts giant rocks from the ground to deal great damage to a wide range of enemies.

Ys-VIII-PS4_02-02-17_006.jpg

—Special Ability
Destroy cracked walls. You can also move around in areas where movement is restricted, such as in places where strong wind is blowing.

Ys-VIII-PS4_02-02-17_007.jpg

Luminous (Light)
—Features
A hit-and-away type that fights with overwhelming speed that surpasses the Iclucian style. Its defense power is considerably low, and many of its skills are peculiar. Since its Extra Gauge acquisition rate is increased, it can let out skills attacks one after the other, and exterminate enemies at once with Extra Skills.

Ys-VIII-PS4_02-02-17_008.jpg

—Skill Attack: “Elemental Shoot”
A skill that converges your power to a single point and fires a super-speed beam of light. It has penetrating capability and exhibits tremendous power in battles against groups of smaller enemies.

—Special Ability
See invisible objects. You can also melt ice using the power of light.

Round up the castaways and invade the enemy base.

Falcom has released new information, screenshots, and gameplay of the PlayStation 4 version of Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana, detailing the new “Domination Battles” gameplay element.

Get the details below.
■ New System: “Domination Battles”

“Domination Battles” are a new battle mode implemented in the PlayStation 4 version of Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana.

■ Domination Battles: Invade the Enemy Base with the Castaways

As you progress through the main story, you’ll have the chance to invade the bases where the beasts of the Isle of Seiren have built their nests.
At these times, the player can freely select a mission to take on a special battle known as a “Domination Battle.”

Domination Battle Flow

(1) You can place “bonfires” inside the circles within the area. Bonfires weaken enemies in the area surrounding the bonfire, allowing you to fight at an advantage.

(3) Repeat steps one and two while expanding the area that you control.

Ys-VIII_03-02-17_004.jpg

(4) If you destroy all of the enemy nests or a certain amount of time passes, the area boss will appear. Defeat the boss to win the battle.

Ys-VIII_03-02-17_005.jpg

(5) When the battle ends, you’ll obtain various bonus items depending on your score.

Bonfires Have a Direct Effect on Destroying Enemy Nests

Enemy nests have extremely high HP, and a lot of time would be needed to destroy them with standard attacks, but if a bonfire is nearby, you can receive support from the castaways and thus destroy the enemy nests in short time.

Watch Out for Bonfire Destruction

Bonfires have a level of durability, and enemies in the vicinity of the bonfire will attack it in order to destroy it.
If a bonfire is destroyed, its affect of weakening surrounding enemies will disappear, and you won’t receive support from the castaways, putting you at a disadvantage in the fight.

Non-Stop Battles

In the PS Vita version’s “Counter-Attack Battles,” intermediate results displayed for each wave, and during the results display there were no attacks from enemies, but Domination Battles continue non-stop even during the intermediate results display.

Ys-VIII_03-02-17_006.jpg
Pay attention, because your bonfires can be destroyed and bosses may swoop down on you while you’re looking at the intermediate results!

Spirit Rescue

In the world of Dana’s parts of the game, there are “spirits” born by the power of nature. Those spirits can sometimes get caught in disorderly places.

By finding and rescuing spirits in various places, you can receive various benefits, including new styles such as Gratica and Luminous, style ability upgrades, and stat increases for Dana.

Underground Shrine

As a new dungeon added to Dana’s part of the game in the PlayStation 4 version, you will aim to clear a huge underground shrine using Dana’s Style Change abilities.

By reaching the depths of the dungeon, a door will open allowing you to proceed to the next level, but there are some doors that won’t open if Dana hasn’t built up enough “virtue.”

You’ll be able to build up “virtue” by clearing various quests in Dana’s part of the game, as well as by rescuing spirits, allowing you to open the doors.

Falcom has released a two-minute, off-screen gameplay video from the PlayStation 4 version of Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana showing the game’s new “Underground Shrine” area.

As previously detailed, the Underground Shrine is a new dungeon that can be cleared using second protagonist Dana’s Style Change abilities. To proceed to the each new floor of the dungeon, Dana will need to build up “virtue,” which can be obtained by clearing quests and rescuing spirits.

Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana is due out for PlayStation 4 in Japan on May 25, and for PlayStation 4, PS Vita, and PC in North America and Europe this fall. The PS Vita version is already available in Japan.

PlayStation 4
Ys VIII for PS4 details Dana’s Style Change Extra Skills, nighttime exploration, and Gallery Mode

Each style has an exclusive Extra Skill.

Ys-VIII_04-27-17_Top.jpg

Falcom has released new screenshots and details the Extra Skills of Dana’s style changes, nighttime exploration, and Gallery Mode in the PlayStation 4 version of Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana.

Get the information below.
■ Extra Skills (Style Change Edition)
In the PlayStation 4 version of Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana, Dana can style change into three styles in addition to her default style—the “Iclucian,” “Gratica,” and “Luminous” styles. Dana can also trigger Extra Skills exclusive to those styles.

Extra Skills, which are the strongest special move each character possess, can be triggered by consuming the Extra Gauge, which is built up by landing standard skill attacks. Extra Skills are extremely powerful and possess tremendous capabilities, such as a super wide range attack, but since the Extra Gauge reduces to zero after use, deciding when to use it is important.

Iclucian Exclusive Extra Skill: “Hyouko Enbujin”

Ys-VIII_04-27-17_001.jpg

Annihilates surrounding enemies with a rotating attack using the crescent blade. After that, giant icicles appear in mid-air and continuously drop down onto ground enemies to deal big damage to a wide range of enemies.

Gratica Exclusive Extra Skill: “Genkou Hasaijin”

Ys-VIII_04-27-17_002.jpg

Blows away nearby enemies with a hammer attack, and traps enemies in giant stone pillars that rise from the ground. For the finishing blow, numerous meteorites rain down from the sky to destroy surrounding enemies.

Luminous Exclusive Skill: “Senkou Rengajin”

Ys-VIII_04-27-17_003.jpg
Dana approaches the enemies before her at top speed, and after unleashing an upheaval of continuous attacks with her katars, aims and shoots a beam of converged heat energy at the enemy to deal big damage.

■ System: Nighttime Exploration

From “Gendarme” to “Pangaia Great Plains,” you can explore some of the areas on the Isle of Seiren at night.

Ys-VIII_04-27-17_004.jpg

Not only are the enemy types completely different, enemy movement patterns also change to correspond to the nighttime period, so a different method of clearing these areas is required than would be during the day or evening.

Ys-VIII_04-27-17_005.jpg

When the Ancients are asleep, they will not do anything as long as you do not approach them, but if you make noise in their vicinity, they will rise in a fit of rage and attack the player.

Since there are more enemies out at night, you’ll be surrounded by Ancients in the blink of an eye if you lose focus.

■ System: Gallery Mode

Ys-VIII_04-27-17_006.jpg

From the title screen, you can enter Gallery Mode, which lets you view the event scenes, illustrations, and movies from in the game.

There aren’t only main story event scenes, there are also favorability events for each character you can experience again. Image boards and in-game reflection scenes. You can also fully appreciate illustrations such as production image boards and in-game reflection scenes.
Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana is due out for PlayStation 4 in Japan on May 25, and for PlayStation 4, PS Vita, and PC in North America and Europe this fall. The PS Vita version is already available in Japan.

Falcom President Says He Wants To Bring Games To The Nintendo Switch . July 10, 2017 . 8:30am

In a new interview, Flacom president Toshihiro Kondo noted that the Switch is “completely a ‘Nintendo machine’,” and that he thinks that is a “really cool thing.”

Nihon Falcom has been developing JRPGs for quite awhile, with their The Legend of Heroes and Ys series gaining popularity in the west. However, these titles are only available, as of now, on PlayStation and PC, though that could change in the future, as Falcom’s president Toshihiro Kondo has recently expressed his desire to bring games to the Nintendo Switch.

Speaking with DualShockers, Kondo noted that the Switch is “completely a ‘Nintendo machine’,” and that he thinks that is a “really cool thing.” Kondo went on to say the following about his desire to bring Falcom games on the console:
“Yea, if the opportunity presents itself, I would definitely like to get Falcom games on the Switch.”
In addition, Kondo’s interest in the Switch is also notable considering the last Falcom game to ever appear on a Nintendo console was 1995’s Ys V: Kefin, The Lost City of Sand.

Plus, a look at the PlayStation 4 Day One Edition.

Ys-VIII-Trailer_08-03-17.jpg

Falcom has releasd a new trailer for Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana dubbed “The Explorers of Seiren,” which introduces characters Laxia, Sahad, Hummel, and Ricotta.

Here’s an overview of each character, via the game’s official website:

 • Laxia – Daughter of the noble Roswell family from Garman, who was on the Lombardia. She attempts to act like a humble noble, but her inflated sense of pride and stubborn inclinations make it a fruitless effort. In Castaway Village, where all manner of social status and job classes mingle, she feels like a fish out of water, but she decides to utilize her knowledge about ancient organisms and wildlife to assist Adol.
 • Sahad – A fisherman from Greek who is a dynamic, generous, and cheerful fellow. Laxia is often appalled by his frank and sometimes crude outbursts, but he is warm and sincere—even prone to crying when things get too emotional. He is highly knowledgeable about the sea and has his own philosophy about fishing. He has a family to get home to, which is why he decides to help Adol and escape the Isle of Seiren.
 • Hummel – An enigmatic “Transporter” who goes rogue on the Isle of Seiren. He takes pride in his work and his serious personality causes him to fulfill any duty that is requested of him. He is also a stickler for cleanliness. He drifted ashore along with a package that he was in the midst of transporting, but keeps mum about both the package and the details of his transportation request. He possesses a new type of weapon called a “gun” that is described as a small-scale cannon.
 • Ricotta – A girl who was living on the Isle of Seiren before Adol and the others found themselves there. Ricotta is innocent to a fault and well-versed in both the island’s geography and the Ancient Species. She gleaned all her other knowledge and vocabulary from documents and books that drifted to the island shore, so her language skills are sometimes lacking. She’s been waiting a long time for her father to return from his exploration of the island…
NIS America also revealed the “Day One Edition” for Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana, which is only available for PlayStation 4 and includes a five-track “Select Soundtrack” and 32-page, full-colored art booklet. Both the PlayStation 4 Day One Edition and standard edition PS Vita copies will include a reversible cover voted by fans.

The king of Altago, however, having known of the duo’s pending arrival from an old trusted friend, quickly releases the pair from prison and summons them to his chambers. He tells the men about an ancient shrine that was uncovered after a recent earthquake, and asks for their help in investigating this mysterious new find. Adol and Dogi oblige, unaware that they are about to take the first steps on a long journey to save all of Altago from long-forgotten ancient forces, and to reunite the estranged five tribes who serve and protect the Five Great Dragons – deified beings who may well be the world’s last hope.
