Ys VIII: Lacrimosa Of Dana Tries Its Best To Make People Care About Dana.September 11, 2017 . 12:00pm

Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana’s new heroine, Dana, gives players a chance to experience new things and connect with a sympathetic character.

38 comments Read >

Adol isn’t the only lead in Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana. While there have been multiple games where he’s shared the spotlight with some more minor characters, this installment has him sharing top billing with a new character. Dana is a young, blue-haired woman who seems to be just as strong and awe-inspiring as the adventurer we’ve come to know and love. But, she’s also a completely new person tossed in among recognizable faces like Adol and Dogi. Fortunately, Nihon Falcom does its best to try and make her feel important, so people actually care about this heroine.

People’s first encounters with Dana are via vague dreams. Not long after starting Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana, Adol begins having dreams about her. The first one is subtle and tugs at players’ emotions. In this first segment, we see her taken away from everything she knows. She possesses a gift and is chosen, which involves her leaving her father and home, going into the keeping of people who will encourage these gifts. It feels as though it is executed in a way that makes her seem as sympathetic as the people who are trapped on Seiren Island. We feel for her as much as we do them, as both are placed in circumstances beyond their control.

Dana is never set up to be a replacement for Adol, another feature that makes her sudden inclusion and headlining in Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana easier to bear. She comes to us in dreams. Both Adol and the player are learning about her experiences and life between important chapters of his story. She is there to provide a sense of balance. Her attacks are slash attacks with similar range and features. She goes through dungeons that are reminiscent of the ones Adol experienced in earlier Ys. There’s a familiarity to her role as a chosen hero, as we have followed Adol through similar situations where a great destiny was thrust upon him.

The placement of Dana’s dream segments end up being rather ingenious. Yes, it takes you away from the the actions of Adol and his party. We are forced to temporarily give up that to which we have become accustomed. But, there is a positive to this. Through Dana, we get to experience other locations that we wouldn’t get to see because Adol and his allies are trapped on Seiren. It expands our horizons. I don’t want to spoil exactly what sorts of spaces we will see yet, since Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana isn’t yet available, but it adds to the game’s diversity. Dana’s civilization is more advanced, and it shows when we are able to explore these additional areas.

Finally, there’s her appearance. Dana looks very nostalgic. People who played the original Ys games, or more recently Ys Origin, will note how her character desig calls to mind Feena and Reah. She has long, blue hair, just like the twin goddesses. Though, that does change when her attribute changes. She could even be seen as a fan-service character, as her outfit is quite intricate and appealing, she has a personality that is easy to root for, and has a sense of duty and loyalty that makes her admirable.

Dana leaves quite a mark on Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana. The heroine is an admirable, attractive, and sympathetic woman whose appearance may call to mind earlier Ys leads. Her segments add a bit of diversity to the game, as they give us new areas in some occasionally unique spaces to explore after being trapped on a deserted island. Her story adds intrigue and additional information to Adol’s story.

Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana will come to the PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, and PC in North America on September 12, 2017, followed by a September 15, 2017 release in Europe.

NIS America apologizes for quality of Ys VIII localization, fix due out by end of November
Published 10 hours ago. 475 comments.

New translator and editor go over the entire localization.

Ys-VIII-Localization_10-10-17.jpg

NIS America president Takuro Yama****a has issued a statement apologizing for the quality of the Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana, saying that it has not “reached an acceptable level by our own standards” and that a free patch fixing the quality issues is by the end of November.

Get the full message below.
To All Customers of Ys VIII,
Thank you for all the feedback and support we have received since the launch of Ys VIII. It has come to my attention that the quality of the Ys VIII localization has not reached an acceptable level by our own standards, but most importantly by yours. As president of NIS America, Inc. I want to apologize to you personally for this grave error. This situation should not have happened – especially to a game as wonderful as Ys VIII and by a company that strives to deliver the very best customer experience in each title. We have begun internally to investigate the causes of this situation as well as to implement steps to ensure that a similar situation does not occur again.

As for Ys VIII itself, we will have a new translator and editor go over the entire localization to fix grammatical errors, typos, inconsistencies, and also to take a fresh look at the dialog and characterizations. For the script, where necessary, we will re-translate and re-edit the game including updating voicework to reflect these changes. We plan to have this work done by the end of November and will offer the updated localization free of charge for both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita versions of the game via patch. The Steam version of the game will include this localization in its initial release.

We humbly request your patience in this process.
Again, as the president and CEO of NIS America, Inc, I deeply apologize and vow to you that we will bring the quality of the localization of Ys VIII up to the high standards that it and you deserve.
Please allow us this opportunity to restore your faith in NIS America, Inc.

Sincerely, Takuro Yama****a

Ys-VIII-Localization-PC-Delay_11-02-17.jpg

The localization fix for Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana will no longer meet its previously set November release window, NIS America announced. It is now planned for release in early 2018.

The PC version of Ys VIII has also been delayed to coincide with the release of the fix.

“This is going to come as no surprise to many of you, but after beginning this revision, we have realized that due to the scope of this undertaking, we will unfortunately not be able to release by the end of this month as we had originally intended,” senior associate producer Alan Costa said in an update.

The localization fix includes a revision of the game’s current translation with a new translator, a complete re-edit of the script (voiced and unvoiced) including corrections to item names and descriptions with a new editor, voice re-recording, and debugging of the new build. External feedback will also be incorporated (details on that will be shared in a future update).

NIS America has been working on a localization fix after apologizing over its various issues back in October. The publisher shared its latest update on voice recording in a recent blog post.

Check out the blog message below:

Hello Ys Fans,

Another update from sunny Burbank, California!

We are currently into our eighth straight day of recording and it’s looking like we should be all finished by the end of this week. We were able to get all the actors back and, of the main characters, we only have Laxia, Dana, and Sahad left to finish their voice recording. The talent have been eager and excited about this whole process and have been putting in some amazing performances. I hope that you’re all looking forward to hearing the new script in-game!

After first checking the audio files internally, we will deliver them to Falcom for implementation and should have a build ready by early to mid-December. Once we have that, we can start sharing some screenshots and videos!

Since voice re-recording will be wrapping up, what’s next? Well, as many of you correctly surmised, our progress so far has been focused on the voiced lines in the game. Once we finish up recording, we will move into all the unvoiced sections of the game.

Thank you for reading, and we hope you’re looking forward to next week’s update.
Alan

Check out our earlier report for the previous blog post where NIS America announced plans to rewrite and re-record almost 100% of its script.

Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana is available on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita. The PC version of the game is now expected to arrive in early 2018 to coincide with the revised localization.

Ys-VIII-PC-Delay_01-19-18.jpg

NIS America has delayed the PC version of Ys VIII: Lacrimlsa of Dana once again from its previously planned January 30 release date to an unannounced date.

The PC delay will not affect the launch of the relocalization patch for the PlayStation 4 and PS Vita versions, which will still launch on January 30.

Find the full message from NIS America explaining the delay below.
To all of you who have been anxiously awaiting the PC release of Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana, we have a very regrettable announcement: we are once again pushing the release to an as-of-yet indeterminate date. We sincerely apologize for this delay, and we would like to explain in detail the reason why we are proceeding with the delay. This decision was not made lightly, and we understand that many of you will be upset about this news.

For that, and most importantly, for the delay, we are very sorry.
Please note, however, that this announcement does not affect the relocalization update patch planned for January 30th for the PlayStation®4 and PlayStation Vita versions of the game.

Low framerate issues and memory leak problems were apparent from the earliest PC builds we received. To help combat these, we looked into the drawing processes, which lead to an overall improvement in performance. However, we are still encountering framerate drops in specific circumstances.

The systems regulating these framerate issues are heavily reliant on the architecture of the original PlayStation 4 version and, as such, are not existent in PC architecture. The memory leak issues are somewhat less complicated and expected to be resolved this weekend. But in order to solve these issues, we have determined that we must modify the core level of data in the game.

As the PC version of the game was originally envisioned as a port, we avoided touching the core programming as much as possible and focused on PC performance optimization. However, in light of the feedback of those who have participated in the second beta test, we have concluded that we cannot avoid modifying the core programming.

Once the changes from the relocalization efforts have been implemented at the end of this month, we will be moving development to an entirely different developer who will primarily focus on frame rate improvements as well as other PC optimizations. Once that process begins, we will monitor the progress and determine the release schedule. We will also be sure to give regular updates to our progress.

Again, we truly regret that we underestimated the severity of the issues that have surfaced (and how long it would take to resolve them), and for that, NIS America sincerely apologizes to all of you for this unexpected delay. We are fully aware of how much our fans have been anticipating this release, and will do our very best to launch the game the way it is meant to be launched: without any issues, game-breaking bugs, or errors.

If you have made a pre-purchase on Steam and would like a refund due to this delay, please use the link provided

For any purchases or pre-orders made outside of the Steam channel, please contact the corresponding refund support for that channel.
