Didn't you love the mashed potato scene though?

SolidSnakeMGS said:Wow. This coming from a Brazil fan is a bit disappointing since both movies share similiar themes of obsession and hope.
I love the story of how some loser everyman eventually becomes extremely important to not only himself, but to humanity.
Its by no means a fast paced story, its a slow serve that builds and builds to a very inevitable and fantastic ending. Its a journey film, and it works brilliantly. Speilberg uses the dark and shadows to pique our imagination, instead of flat out revealing everything to spoil our imagination a'la War of the Worlds.

Mr. Walters said:Wow. I never really saw it that way. I always thought it was a story of obsession, plain and simple. That Roy Neary held this belief, this ideal, so highly, that he was willing to gamble his family over it. To me, Close Encounters seems almost like a metaphor for drug use. Neary was cleary addicted to this. Interesting analogy though. That is part of what makes this film great, it is open for various interpretations.
Amen. And that is why I said it is not for everyone. Today's movie audience's want fast paced MTV style movies, which Close Encounters is not. It is sad that Spielberg resorted to this for War of the Worlds, which was awful in my opinion.
Mr. Walters said:Nope. If I was referring to you I would have used your screen name. Besides, I don't even know what the hell Brazil is...I mean, other than a country.
And 2001? Slow? Yeah, I suppose it is, but it's too different of a film to compare to Close Ecounters.

Wilhelm-Scream said:Even when I was a little kid I hated how everyone acts all in love with these wonderful aliens.
Erm...they abducted a bunch of people, stole this woman's child, plucked people from decades ago and returned them later when their loved ones are all old or dead.
They were evil.
SolidSnakeMGS said:Actually, all the people they "abducted" came of their own free will if I remember correctly.
