Zac Efron To Star in Sean Durkin’s Next Film ‘Iron Claw’ – Deadline

EXCLUSIVE: Days after announcing his next star studded comedy at Netflix, Zac Efron is continuing to build up his diversified slate as he is set to star in A24’s The Iron Claw, the latest drama from writer-director Sean Durkin. A24 is set to finance and produce the pic with Durkin writing and directing. Producing alongside A24 are Tessa Ross, Derrin Schlesinger and Harrison Huffman. The film was developed by House Productions, with the support of Access Entertainment, and BBC Films.

Based on the true story of the Von Erichs, the film follows the rise and fall of the Von Erich family, a dynasty of wrestlers who made a huge impact on the sport from the 1960s to the present day.

Legends of World Class Championship Wrestling in Dallas, TX. Kerry Von Erich was a former NWA World Heavyweight Champion as well as WWF Intercontinental Champion under the name Texas Tornado.

Wonder which Von Erich he’ll be?

Their are still Von Erichs wrestling: Ross and Marshall (the sons of Kevin) wrestle in MLW.

The real casting is whoever they get to play Fritz. But this sounds interesting, such a sad tale about the Von Erich family.

I think I might have to get the tissue box when this comes out. Just reading their story and about the Von Erich curse made me depressed.

Good for him. Efron needs one, two hits again and Im looking forward he come back in good shape to the big screen.

Just read their story and damn that’s sad. I can see why the filmmakers want to tell this story but understand why the family isn’t involved.

Wonder what other wrestlers will be portrayed in the film?

Most of them are taller than Efron, but they could use camera angles for that stuff.

Love the idea of a Von Erich’s movie. I was always a fan of Kevin and Kerry from their days in GWF and then Kerry’s stint as Texas Tornado in WWF. I always thought that it was sad that promotions tried to make Kerry an Ultimate Warrior rip-off (looking at you GWF and calling him the Modern Day Warrior) because he was so far superior to Ultimate Warrior it wasn’t even funny.

Wait, I just remembered I knew the Von Erich name due to watching Lacey Von Erich on TNA a decade ago.

Been quite awhile, but I didn’t know much about them or the tragedy.

That sucks!

Harris Dickinson Joins Zac Efron In Sean Durkin’s ‘The Iron claw’ Movie – Deadline

EXCLUSIVE: Sean Durkin’s new pic revolving around the Von Erichs wrestling family is gaining steam. Sources tell Deadline that Where the Crawdads Sing star Harris Dickinson is set to play David Von Erich in The Iron Claw, in which Zac Efron is already is set to star as Kevin Von Erich.

A24 and Access Industries is co-financing the pic, which Durkin is writing and directing. Producing alongside A24 are Tessa Ross, Derrin Schlesinger and Harrison Huffman. The film was developed by House Productions with the support of Access Industries and BBC Films.

Makes sense for Efron to be Kevin given the Iron Claw was a finishing move for Kevin.

I thought Efron would be Kerry as they weren’t far off in terms of facial features.

He was always called the Modern Day Warrior, even in World Class. It was a line in the song “Tom Sawyer” by Rush that he would come out too.

I can see why they want him to play Kevin. Efron's their leading man, and Kevin is the only one of his siblings who didn't die a tragic death. His own sons are also wrestlers now and seem to be doing well for themselves and are doing OK. Not sure he's the best fit for Kevin, but we'll see.

I'm not nervous about this movie, but I am cautious. I do want it to be an unflinching look at the business, but I also want it to be accurate and authentic.

I remember rumors of a Ring of Hell adaptation about the life of Chris Benoit. I don't know if it was true but I remember reading like Liev Schreiber as Benoit. I just don't know how you make a movie about that. I don't think it can functionally work.

That would feel so exploitative. Especially when you remember that Benoit killed Nancy and their son on different days, I could see that being a focal point, which would be accurate, but again it would feel exploitative. I highly doubt Nancy’s family would allow it to happen also.

Anyway, as far as this movie, I think they should get JK Simmons for Fritz.
