Taylour Paige Cast as Lead in A24's 'Zola' (Exclusive)

A24 has finally found its Zola.

Up-and-comer Taylour Paige will star in the indie studio's movie Zola, the saga about a stripper that took Twitter (and the larger internet) by storm in 2015. Then-20-year-old Aziah Wells, aka Zola, rose to internet infamy when she chronicled, 140 characters at a time, a wild 48-hour odyssey with an exotic dancer, the dancer’s boyfriend and a pimp.

Exclusive: Riley Keough, Colman Domingo Join Taylour Paige in A24's Stripper Saga 'Zola'

Riley Keough (The Girlfriend Experience) and Colman Domingo (Fear the Walking Dead) are set to join up-and-comer Taylour Paige in A24’s stripper saga Zola, Collider has exclusively learned. Keough will play the sex worker, and Nicholas Braun is being eyed to play her doting, bipolar boyfriend. Domingo will play the charming-yet-violent pimp, according to sources.

Hahaha. I remember this wild story. Also, when James Franco was behind the film and some people weren't happy about that.

Ari’el Stachel Joins ‘Zola’;’ Dirk Gently’s Fiona Dourif Cast In ‘Unsinkable’

Tony winner Ari’el Stachel is set to appear in the A24 Janicza Bravo-directed drama, Zola, opposite title role star Taylour Paige, Colman Domingo, Riley Keough, and Jason Mitchell. It’s based on a series of bizarre 2015 tweets from Aziah ‘Zola’ Wells who detailed a wild 2-day Flordia trip with a sex worker named Jessica, her boyfriend Jarrett, and Jessica’s violent pimp, who went by Z. Ari’el plays Zola’s fiancé, Sean. The film’s source material is a Rolling Stones article Zola Tells All: The Real Story Behind the Greatest Stripper Saga Ever Tweeted by David Kushner. Bravo co-wrote the screenplay with playwright Jeremy O. Harris, Andrew Neel, and Mike Roberts.

This story is so wild. It's been a while since I read the twitter thread, but I remember most of it.

From the reviews I read, it seems like it's really good until the ending.

I thought I’d find the higher quality one at A24’s YouTube channel, but it’s not there. Zola did post it herself on her Twitter page.

WTF did I just watch?

I’m surprised they didn’t cast Cardi B in this

Not sure why anyone would think of her for the role of Zola.

I didn't know Cousin Greg was in this, so that was a pleasant surprise

It’s like if Alicia Silverstones character in Beauty Shop became a stripper.

It looks like this is one of Jason Mitchell's most recent project that he's involved in. Been a minute since I've watched him in anything.

Some mutuals on letterboxd watched it a while back and apparently it's nothing special

IIRC he had some misconduct accusations leveled against him a while back and hasn't really popped up anywhere since.

I guess the 2020 setback left a lot of money in the A24 marketing budget. They're pushing this and The Green Knight a lot harder than their average release. I hope it works out for them and these movies can start getting wider audiences.
