Horror ‘Resident Evil’ | Netflix Series

Ugh…looks so damn generic. Looks more like Fear the Walking Dead than Resident Evil

This show is going to bomb hard. And with Netflix struggling and going by their recent track record, I’m sure this show will end on a cliffhanger only to then be cancelled. So what’s the point?

Why is it so damn hard for studios to properly adapt Resident Evil? 20+ years and they just can’t get it right

I mean technically the movie from last year was what one would call a ‘proper adaption’(it’s the only RE movie to be a straightforward adaption of the games, and is one of most faithful videogame movies) and that still tanked. Maybe RE is just better off being left as a videogame series. The games are very cinematic already so there’s hardly the need to adapt them to film.

While the teaser wasn't as horrible as it could have been with all the money shots, nobody should be expecting Midnight Mass levels of quality and at least Midnight Mass had the sense to be a limited one and done series. Unless this has big breakout appeal it's already Netflixcancelled.

The Streamable - Netflix Searches for Next ‘New Girl,’ Female-led ‘Jack Ryan,’ and More

According to memos sent by the streamer to creators, the company is currently looking to develop the next "New Girl," a female-led version of Amazon's "Jack Ryan," a fresh take on "The Voice," and a whole lot more. The sourced documents are meant to help executives, writers, and producers develop pitches and provide an insight into the streamer's current content desires and reveal what types of programming audiences can expect to see in the future.

According to the documents, Netflix is looking for big stories that can be told on a budget. The streaming giant is searching for content with a "wow factor" and have specifically asked for no "sad coms," presumably short for "sad comedies."
Netflix referenced both “Emily in Paris” and “Never Have I Ever” as examples of what production creators should strive for. According to the memos, the company is looking for content that can encourage a broad reach that will help them attract — and maintain — audiences from across demographics. Netflix is hoping that its theoretical spin on “The Voice” will attract the “TikTok generation.”

The streaming giant has told agencies that they are open to almost any type of story as long as it has a “hook.” Additionally, the company specifically mentioned they are looking for a “Gracie and Frankie” replacement that caters to an older audience that might otherwise be uncertain of subscribing or sticking with the streamer.

Former Netflix Director of Creative Leadership and Development for Original Animation Phil Rynda once told creators, “We want to be the home of everybody’s favorite show.”

I mean, Capcom has had trouble getting Resident Evil right, so why expect others to?

I'm still insanely curious about this. On the plus side, it looks a whole lot better than Welcome to Racoon City, in terms of cinematography.

That was a poor adaptation that took two video games and squeezed them into one. It's bad enough when they cut a single adaptation down to fit a movie but doing it to two at the same time was always going to fail.

And I liked that movie too. It would have worked better as a new, stand alone IP without wrecking the characters and story so badly. I really felt let down by how inept they made Leon. Wesker was not the badass he is in the games but most everyone else was at least a passable facsimile.

Okay it might not be saying much but this definitely looks like it has higher production values than Welcome to Raccoon City which doesn't mean a whole lot but its something I guess.

The creatures actually look pretty solid to me, but outside of that stuff it just doesn't look or feel like Resident Evil and I still don't see myself getting all that invested in the story.

I'll check it out solely for Lance Reddick and whatever kind of creature/zombie carnage we get which was barely any in Welcome to Raccoon City, but my expectations are still really low overall.

To each their own, while it make some changes, I thought that movie stayed true to the overall spirit and mood of those games. That being said, as I said before, I’d much rather the RE series not be adapted as movies ever again as I think the games are already cinematic enough.

Resident Evil in general just isn't really a game series that works for a TV show or movie imo. At least, not in terms of what fans would want.

Arguably the biggest aspect of classic style Resident Evil that makes it so captivating is the resource management + the runs from savepoint to savepoint. Neither of which you can really do in as compelling of a way in a medium other than videogames.

But at the same time, it'd help if they actually tried for once.

I know its a staple of the franchise, but I've never played an RE game for resource management. The story, atmosphere, and setting is what I care about. I've yet to see an adaption that adapted all three of those elements well.

But I suppose they could have the protagonist of an RE film have to deal with extremely limited equipment and having to abandon stuff to stay quiet and fast and light on their feet. Keep dialogue limited and stealth a prominent element of the story. Or have a scene when one protagonist is helping another one figure out what they need to survive and what stuff is just dead weight slowing them down. Or they could make it an element of the character's background. Grew up on the streets and learned early to not to get attached to more than they could carry and to be ready to leave things behind. So throughout the film the protagonist is constantly ditching weapons and finding new ones and building weapons. Like John Wick does.

Or have the protagonist constantly pulling things out of random hard to see pockets all over their outfit. Make it a running joke through the film.:hehe:

I’ve only seen a few RE movies and they were all TERRIBLE. I haven’t played the games much so I don’t know whether this show is a huge divergence for them but… this already looks better than any other RE adaptation I’ve suffered through. After that last reboot, I thought they should just give up but apparently there is some obligation from a higher power to keep making new entrants into this series. And if so, then at least this one looks like it might be interesting? Eh, probably not lol.

Still unsure about the timeline split. But the creatures look good. Finally a tyrant. Keeping an open mind.
Like Jurassic Park and dinos, I’ll enjoy seeing a live action tyrant even if the show around it is terrible.

As a fan of the games, I don't care that this isn't a faithful adaptation. We just had a movie which was really close to the first 2 games (except for Leon), and it was garbage... so I'll give this a fair chance.

I mean from a gameplay standpoint, mostly. When it comes to classic Resident Evil, the lack of ammo, medical items etc amplify the latter two things you talk about so much. A licker is not as scary if you have a grenade launcher with a lifetime supply of rounds. It's absolutely terrifying when it's practically a bullet sponge and all you have is a dinky little pistol with essentially one magazine.

And that's not something you can do in as compelling a way in a medium other than videogames because it inherently relies on the immersion of you being the one in control and not having enough resources. Otherwise, you're just watching a character on a screen or reading a character in a book with that issue. You can still do that and it'd probably work, but it's guaranteed to not be as effective as it is for a videogame.

The only way, in my opinion, to do a Resident Evil movie or show is honestly to go straight to RE4's whacky tone and slightly more actiony pace. But even then, that just runs the risk of giving us the Anderson movies again. I genuinely just don't think you can effectively do Resident Evil live action without it being disappointing in some way. The games (or at least the very good ones) just aren't really adaptable, in that sense.

Netflix needs to shake up their executive ranks. They’re quickly becoming the Cannon Films of the new millennium.
