🇷🇺🇺🇦 Discussion: Relations with Russia and the war in Ukraine

Our president and prime minister will disclose their NATO stances simultaneously tomorrow at 10 am Finnish time.

In a presser with Boris Johnson, our president Sauli Niinistö was asked about Russia's possible response to Finland "possible" joining NATO: "You caused this. Look at the mirror".

Who is he accusing? Boris or the Press?

According to Swedish paper Expressen, Swedish parliament will discuss NATO membership on Monday and the government would officially apply for it later on Monday.

Finnish parliament will discuss on it beginning Monday morning at 10 am. Depending on how long they'll talk about it, there will be a vote after it.

Ive been reading some stuff about how a lot of Russias oh so advanced Military equipment is not really something they can use since its either too expensive to create in masses or in actual combat less effective than it seems.
That "worlds most advanced" Tank Russia has, and which they so far only built 20 or what...was it confirmed that it was destroyed by the Ukraine?

Either way, outside of the Nuclear weapons...russia seems to be highly incompetent.
The pride of their Marine got sunk, they have no air superiority, on land they have some embarrassing losses...and that without Ukraine having some of the NATOs advanced weapons.

The irony in all of this is that Russia's attempt to weaken NATO and expand their own influence will, in all likelihood, result in the exact opposite. If Ukraine can hold out, I suspect we could see a big shift in public opinion as well as a regime change in Russia. It's easy to see now why Putin wanted Trump in the WH. The US president has the potential to do more to strengthen or harm it than any other single person in the world. I shudder to think what would have happened had Trump been re-elected.

People don't seem to be talking much about Putin's "genius" or their support for him these days, but those people are out there and laying low for the time being; just like the bigots were before Trump gave them the okay to crawl out from under their rocks.

While no one wants to be threatened militarily or otherwise by another country, Putin's threats ring rather hollow from where I sit. I mean, he's bogged down in Ukraine. What's he going to do? Open up another front against Finland and Sweden?

It's looking more and more like the "genius" overplayed his hand from the start and got himself into a mess of his own making.

Just saw on CNN that yes, one of those new tanks was hit by Ukraine. :D

Unless there is a new article of which I am unaware, that article about the most advanced Russian tank destroyed was misleading. It was a T-90M, a upgraded version of the 30 year old T-90. Not the new T-14. The articles used the misleading title due to the T-14 not being in combat service yet. The Ukrainian T-84 is actually a better tank than the Russian T-90. The best Soviet tank factories/design firms were actually in the Ukraine.

But generally speaking the Russian military is a mess. If read the design history on any of their new post-Cold War vehicles or weapons system, it is literally thirty years of stop star development due to lack of funds. The T-14 has been delayed in production almost a decade now due to financial issues.

Putin had better appreciate how lucky he is that he won't have to face Count Dooku like Stalin did:
