🖥️ General PC Discussion

GTK4 DING extension updated this morning and broke on my system. I have regular DING to fall back on, but I loved GTK4 because it played with my other extensions better. I hope they fix it.
It is fixed!

I'm about to try out System76's Cosmic desktop for Pop OS. It used GNOME before, but they decided to do their own thing.

When I officially have "reading glasses" when I'm on my computer or gaming. They're blue light ones. IDK if they prevent fatigue or insomnia, but I sure as hell like them.

I tried it. It made the fans on my PC speed up and slow down like crazy, but it looks like GNOME with color and Light and Dark mode switching baked in. I hate that the Workspaces and Applications "buttons" are literally just the words and not iconography, which dates the system.

Always wanted to do this kind of DIY digital dashboard project. Raspberry Pi + open-source Android OS is a no-brainer.

Not much in the game industry makes sense anymore.

I still claim their free games every week, but still haven't played one yet. :hehe:

GTA5 was their biggest freebie and there were some other big titles too. I guess as long as the Fortnite money keeps coming, and getting paid by game/movie studios for using Unreal Engine, they will continue with the weekly freebies for the near future.

I had no idea Amazon had a Steam competitor. What a flop.

The reason Steam is on top now is because of its superior software and capabilities - including better than Microsoft, better than Sony - and the massive library. Doing the bare minimum will get you nowhere.

Oh yeah. I forgot Amazon Luna existed. They also had a Fitbit competitor that went nowhere.

Itch.io is a launcher/free/store that’s carved its own niche. Lots of indie games, tech demos, and fan/unofficial projects like a Legend of Zelda II remake. Stuff that players won’t find on Steam.

Yep has your trash and legitimately good games on there. Devs usually put a demo version of an indie game on there before the Steam release. I think that's what happened with Buckshot Roullette.

This is actually pretty good.

Steam is definitely a unicorn in that it is actually benevolent monopoly that maintains its dominance on just being better and giving consumers what they want. The fact that its wannabe competitors like Epic engage in actual anti-competitive behaviour like paid exclusives makes me really hope the current anti-trust suit fails.

The alleged complaints in the anti-trust suit are no worse nor different than how Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo operate their marketplace ecosystems.

The only thing that will make me return to Windows is the following:

  • Remove 'Upload to OneDrive' as default.
  • Remove and cancel Microsoft Recall.
  • Allow me to use the browser and search engine I want to use.
