10 Biggest bombs of 2006

Matt said:
Again though, this list considers Snakes on a Plane a bomb even though it doubled its budget. Therefore they are taking Hype into consideration on this list. If that is the case, SR which was touted as a Pirate killer and this year's Star Wars should be number 1.
I find it strange also, Snakes on a Plane actually made back it's budget in the U.S and Superman Returns was atleast 4 million under and had way more hype.

Lets face it, at best Snakes on a Plane was going to do 85million but SR was expected to be the biggest movie of the year by alot of people. Since SOAP didn't have that sort of hype I can't imagine how it's final tally could be more disappointing than SR's.

I liked Lady in the water! Of course Im a huge MNS fan! It could be about rats and I will stilll like the movie:o

Sixth Sense 9/10
Unbreakable 10/10
Signs 10/10

As you can see I loved those three movies and consider my self a huge fan of his work but I just don't see how a fellow fan can let him get away with The Village and especially Lady in the Water? Name one good/great thing about that movie besides James Newton Howards score?

I loved the Villiage! Sure the twist was predictable but everything was else was very good! Including Brice howard acting! Plus she was hot as a blind chick! Overall it was a good story! I didnt watch the movie in theatre so I didnt have the same expectation as most people did. Actually I avoided this movie for a couple of years because of bad word of mouth even though it was on dvd already. I finally gave it a shot last couple of months and I loved it!

Technically, Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny was a flop...box-office wise, even though their budget was tiny as it was. It's gonna be a cult-classic though. I loved loved loved loved that movie.

I'm convinced that Howard is a great and beautiful actress but that doesn't make the last two M-Night movies any better than they are. The twist in The Village was obvious and useless and all of Lady was just awful. M-Night cast himself as the most important man in the world! And he has arrogant critic killed by a monster! The movie is just self serving awfulness.

The Village would've been about 20 times better if at the end, after the elder's were revealed to be fake monsters, the second monster were real instead of Joaquin Phoenix's character.

That would have been a hell of alot less obvious. I question a persons sanity if they were in anyway surprised by the end of The Village.

I think you mean Adrian Brody's character.

Good to see The Fountain on that list, maybe that will wipe some of the 'pretentious' off of Aronofsky, and then maybe he will learn to make a 'deep' film that isn't so obscure most people don't get it. It's possible, other directors know how.
I rather like Aronofsky's pretentiousness. It makes him stand out from the other directors, LOL. At least he seems sincere in his filmmaking.

I was a bit disappointed in how The Fountain was filmed (especially after reading the GN, but I think that also helped me understand what was going on), but the climax was gloriously breathtaking. I would have been VERY surprised if it had done well at the BO, actually. It's too much of an art film to be anything close to mainstream.

And second the opinion that the score was great.

Wow, someone gave a 10 out of 10 to Signs? That is probably someone very very different from myself.

I don't thnk The Fountain was "too smart" for movie-goers. I think it was boring. *shrug*

Holy ****. I agree with I SEE SPIDEY.

Lady in the Water was one pretentious, hollow, sad excuse for a movie. Shamalyan casts himself as a martyr whose writing will change the world? The film critic is a pretentious snob? Characters who knew the plot of the movie?

I can't believe this was the same filmmaker that made Signs.

We should mark this day down...If you like Shamalyan's films you can't be a total idiot.

Or if they were suprised by the earlier "big" twist in THE VILLAGE.

THE VILLAGE was exceedingly disappointing. LADY IN THE WATER was even worse. Shyamalan's a decent director, but he does himself in with his so-so screenplays. It's about time he started hiring screenwriters, instead of tackling his stories himself.

"The Fountain
Some movies bomb because they’re bad, other because they’re badly advertised. The Fountain failed because it flew right over audiences’ heads. Too smart for popcorn seeking pleasure seekers, the new Darren Aronofsky proved to be a love it or hate it affair. Critics either lauded it as one of the greatest films of all time, or stood around confused and unable to process what they’d been watching. The film then opened against crushing competition like Casino Royale and Happy Feet over Thanksgiving. It was doomed from the start. The result was a dismal $9 million domestic gross after years and years in production and $35 million price tag that hasn’t been recovered. The Fountain may make its money back on DVD, it has cult hit written all over it. "

*...I'm there*

I don't agree with you.

Anyone who thought Snakes On A Plane was going to make $85 million is out of their mind.

In other words, studio executives and some people on this forum.

Basically hype surrounding how stupid and ridiculous a movie is does NOT translate into box office.

Did anyone ever realize that people were laughing AT the mere concept of the movie?

The thing is though...it was successful. It made double it's budget back. I don't get why it is on that list. If they take hype into account then again, Superman Returns was the biggest bomb of the year.

Eragon and Charlottes Web should have topped that list.
