Green Lantern is the Batman & Robin of the new line of superhero movies.

i disagree tthat its like Batman & Robin.i watched every comicbook movie there is to watch and i think this is not true.

What film other than Green Lantern, since say, 2006 when all the reboots started rolling around, has been a big budget film, but was that much of a critical and commercial failure?

The reason I compared it to Batman & Robin is because it was a big budget summer blockbuster superhero movie with a lot of promotion, intending to be tentpole franchises but then went on to be a failure both critically and commercially. If anything, Green Lantern is worse than Batman and Robin because it's budget was larger and I think it made less.

Exactly, it is the Batman and Robin of this new decade of superhero films because there was hype, a lot of hype and expectations being rode on...all for nothing.

It was supposed to be the STAR WARS of superhero movies. That is ******* big.

It is not as bad as Batman and Robin, but in terms of the situation surrounding...they are very similar.

Im still surprised cowboys and aliens didnt do better then it did, it was marketed well, how ford and craig all over the posters along with favreau for directing ironman yet noone went.
Generally westerns dosed with a little sci-fi never do big box office even with A-list stars just look at the flop Will Smith's Wild Wild West turned out.

- Arthur looked incredibly unfunny and I never had urge to even watch 5 minutes.
Russel Brand is funny in small doses, very very small doses.

true grit was one of the few westerns that did very good

It benefited from several factors: 1) Weak competition in December 2010, 2) It was a Coen Brothers movie that wasn't R-rated, 3) It was a remake of a popular John Wayne film. But most importantly, 4) It was pretty good. It made most of its money in 2011, like Avatar did January-February 2010.

A lot of older folks turned out for True Grit in droves. Not surprisingly, most of that demographic are turning out for War Horse which looks to have some decent legs through this month.

Oh, I'm sure it can be good... I hate to sound sexist here but unfortunately, female-led action films are tough to sell to mainstream audiences though. For some reason Angelina Jolie is apparently the only bankable female action star out there these days (which makes little sense to me, since she looks frail as hell). And a WW film would NEED to make money, no matter how good it is.

I'm curious to see how Haywire does, and if Gina Carano can act. She can obviously kick ass, so perhaps if she is also a good actress, she could make a good WW. She has the look for it, IMO.
I sincerelly think it's good for a director to want to do different kinds of films, i mean, look at Peter Jackson, he completelly reimagined himself with the lord of the rings, he was known for his Slapstick and Black comedy films, then since The Lord of the rings he has only done serious, dramatic films with an epic feel in them.

I hope he directs Wonder Woman, it's also his key to hollywood success if well done, he seems to have pashion about the project, that along with the quality of his previous movies is enough to make me believe that he can do an exeptional work with this.

He really gets exposed in big roles like get him to the Greek, the more he talked and tried to joke in that movie the more I wanted to punch him. I think his screen time in Sarah Marshall was perfect, not too much but just enough. He's one of the those comedians that better suited for small supporting roles.

I also hate Tracey Morgan in anything he does, he's the stereotypical black guy and he just ratchets it up times 10.

I'd rather watch Batman and Robin.

Batman and Robin is hilariously awful. I can have a good time laughing at how bad it is, with all of Ahnuld's one liners etc.

Green Lantern is boringly awful. It has zero entertainment factor for me.

I'd cross #1 off that list. There was plenty of competition for True Grit. Just look at how much Black Swan, The Fighter, and The King's Speech made in the same time period. Not to mention, Tron Legacy. True Grit was released at Christmas and it's always an extremely competitive time.

All the other factors are true though. And, people like the Coens, even if they do wait until video for a lot of their films. They're a known quantity at this point. I'd add in that having a teenage girl as a main character probably helped it find an audience beyond the traditionally male dominated western.

I don't think green lantern is like batman and robin. Batman and robin was already a part of a very popular ans successful franchise but ended up sucking hardcore.

Xmen 3 is like batman and robin except xmen 3 actually made lots of money even though it totally sucked.... :whatever:

People are a little to hard on X-Men 3 sure it was no where near as good as X 1 or X 2 but compared to garbage like Green Lantern, Super Man Returns, Batman and Robin etc it was pretty decent. People forget that movie had a lot of issues in pre production (directors switching etc). Fox basically rushed the movie out so that it could be in theaters before Bryan Singers Superman Returns as sort of an eff you to Bryan Singer. So I give X3 a free pass and besides we now have X men first class so that makes up for it as well.

I think the problem is that young people like sci-fi, but not westerns and old people like westerns, but not sci-fi. So by combining the two genres you end up alienating most of the audience.

Its weird though because I loved the western tone favreau had going on from when craig woke up til the aliens showed up. It felt more fresh and updated without boring the crowd like true grit did for me. The alien stuff was just a bonus even if I didnt like there designs.

I think Craig was great as a cowboy. And Ford was suitably mean and grizzly. But i have to admit, i got kinda bored of the movie. I stopped watching when they found that boat upside down in the desert. I'll give it another chance though.

Yeah the movie came to a screeching halt at that point. after that though it moved along quite nicely. I still dont know why that boat was there, it made no sense. They hinted maybe the aliens moved it but why? I definitely liked ford more in this, its sad though now he is playing mean old men in movies.

Green Lantern was terrible and Cowboys and Aliens not much better. I'm glad they flopped, deservingly.

True Grit was a well liked hit and Cowboys and Aliens was not so well liked massive disappointment. True Grit was the exact opposite of boring. Cowboys and Aliens was the most unimaginative and boring movies of 2011. I almost didn't get through it because it was so pathetic. Daniel Craig is beyond boring in the lead role and has no sense of fun and the movie itself has no sense of fun. The script is painfully mediocre and so is the direction. The movie was just an epic fail on all levels and that's why it didn't succeed.

I question a poster's taste if they think that Cowboys and Aliens was more entertaining or better than True Grit.

I didn't hate GL but it is a flop and the fanboys of the movie need to get over it and accept the fact that it was and that a sequel will never be made.

I love True Grit.

"...you are not LaBoeuf..."

I crack up at that line every time.
