15 Year Old Dies In Prank Gone Wrong

And the problem I have with that is it gives hardcore racist, paranoid fools, and anyone else who see danger in the most irrational ways the right to harm people just because they are idiots.

but then what would you propose as a solution to that?

How about not being so paranoid for starters.

Using common sense..and try not to be paranoid about everything, otherwise you'll just see danger in every corner

well, the common sense argument can be applied to the opposite side of the coin, too.

don't be doing stupid stuff to or on other people's property which may give them reason to feel you are suspicious or threatening.

But every kid does crap like that. I've done it a number of times. Toilet papering a house does not exists in a vacuum.

This right here highlights the two opinions in this thread. Octoberist has a very American view, and one I experienced when I was there often, that other people need to manage their behavior. American solutions almost never start with the individual policing his or her own behaviour (i.e the prancer), it's always all about how the people on the receiving end should have, could have, would have, must have reacted.

"Every kid does crap like that"? Then every kid runs the risk of getting on someone's bad side.

Then yes, then a kid runs the risk of dying of eating a banana. You can make excuses but stuff like this isn't out of the ordinary.

BUT This IS a case where they were toilet papering the WRONG house and dealing with the WRONG person, but it's not like they were malicious teens. I guess it's my thinking. I don't think it excuses the man who shot the girl either.

I agree with you 100% on both counts, the pranking kid was unfortunate, and the guy doing the shooting can in no way justify even threatening anyone with a firearm.

That being said, anyone can either choose to control their own behaviour (Completely possible) or can request/demand/insist on trying to control literally every other individual in that society's behavior (Patently impossible). If all people have to do is police their own behaviour to dramatically decrease the chances of any freak event like this happening, why don't they?

I probably have this view because where and how I've been raised made it very clear that you don't interfere with someone's property, under any circumstances. I don't think I ever heard of anyone throughout my entire school career vandalising someone's car/house. It's really just a very foreign concept.

If a poll showed that 95% of individuals in the USA would shrug off their car being vandalised that way then I agree it isn't a big enough deal, because it's more accepted there. I'm just approaching it from my own experience/ norms.

It's not that we shrug it off. We realize it's kids being stupid , but at the same time wish we could catch them in the act or prevent it. I guess that's the price we pay in the "land of the free"

It's always a damned if you do, damned if you don't when it comes to controversial issues around here though. Someone always gets ****ed over.

Some get shot...

I totally agree about people policing their behavior. That goes for both sides. Most things are rarely one sided.

Except for when they are and you go ahead and make up the other side like you did with defending this guy. You claimed he reacted in fear and was justified...until the rest of the story came out that blew your assumption out of the water. Then you backtracked and said you never defended him.

You do this constantly while declaring you don't, and at the same time you claim moral high ground over others for doing the exact thing you accuse them of doing.

What I don't think people realize is people will defend their property with deadly force.

Oh we realize it, we just think those people are terrible human beings and should go live in a cave far away from the rest of civilization.
