2009 NFL Draft Thread (aka Excel & Norman's personal b**ch and moan thread)

Matt Stafford will have the Lions in the playoffs in two years. You can quote me on this.

Stafford lands $41.7M guaranteed from Lions

The Lions have agreed to contract terms with Georgia QB Matthew Stafford and will select him with the first pick in the 2009 draft.
Agent Tom Condon did well, landing Stafford a six-year, $78 million deal. The $41.7 million guaranteed tops Albert Haynesworth's $41 million guaranteed from the Redskins last month. No wonder the NFL wants to fix the rookie salary structure. Detroit can now concentrate on the No. 20 pick in the draft, where offensive tackle and linebacker will be priorities. The St. Louis Rams are on the clock. Apr. 24 - 11:17 pm et

Thats ****ing ridiculous, they got totally ripped off.

Detroit needs a face for this franchise, and with two more quality picks, can at least get this program in the right direction. Stafford is a marketable number one pick, and with time, can be a pro bowl QB with a very solid career that can get Detroit in the right direction. I can't wait for a rookie salary cap of some kind though because that kid just made mega-bank without lifting a finger in the NFL yet.

Seattle would be perfect for Mark Sanchez. He can learn from Matt Hasselbeck

I'm not even excited for the draft. The Panthers don't have a 1st, so I have nothing to look forward to until the end of the draft, when I'll probably be drunk off my ass.

And I only want Jarron Gilbert if we are playing him at DE. None of this lightweight, speedy Defensive Tackle crap. Teams that employ that "finesse defense" always get ran over in the long run. I hope we get Paul Kruger or Lawrence Sidbury in the 2nd. And anyone who thinks going lighter on the D-line is a smart move, go back and watch the Cardinals game, and the entire second half of last season. Our smallish Linebackers got mauled because our D-line couldn't keep the opposing offensive lines occupied. If anything, we should be trying to add size and strength to the D-line as a complement to our small, fast Linebackers. In the draft of my personal dreams, in which we have a 1st round pick due to trading Peppers, we would get Tyson Jackson in the 1st round, and yes, we would play him at DE in our 4-3. And then Ron Brace in the 2nd, to team with Kemo. And then we could rotate Charles Johnson, Hilee Taylor, and Tyler Brayton in at DE as well, with Brayton being the run stopper and Johnson/Taylor in for the pass rush. And I still think Taylor can play OLB.

But, that draft scenario for the Panthers is unlikely for many, many, many reasons. I also suppose my dream of Carolina drafting Jevan Snead next year isn't happening now. By the way, Snead will be the best QB in the draft next year if he comes out, I'd take Snead over Bradford or McCoy, and I would take him over Sanchez and Freeman this year, and possibly Stafford. I've falling in love with Jevan Snead at Quarterback.

The draft is less than 12 hours away. I'm so excited I can't even sleep. I have to work in 2 hours. I'll be back home at 2:30 for pre-draft disscusion.

Stafford is a horrible pick for them, so of course they pulled the trigger.

It's the same 6 year $72 million deal that Matt Ryan got last year as the #3, Stafford just has about $6 million more of it guaranteed.

It's essentially one million more a year than Matt Ryan...who was selected a year ago and two picks later.

This deal is easily summed up like this: If Stafford performs like I think he can and will - it was a great deal because that is absolutely franchise QB money. If Stafford fails - then it's a bad deal because that is absolutely franchise QB money. But that was going to be the case in either instance.

No in Atlanta complains about Matt Ryan's rookie contract.

Stafford is a horrible pick for them, so of course they pulled the trigger.

Yes, a horrible pick. Because anyone whose QB group includes Drew Henson, Drew Stanton and Daunte Culpepper circa 2009 clearly doesn't have a huge gigantic gapping hole at the QB position, and wouldn't be benefited by taking the best QB not only in this draft, but next years.

Come on football Gods.....

Julius Peppers to the Packers for Aaron Kampman and a 2nd. Kampman is the kind of football player I like, Peppers isn't. Peppers wants to play in a 3-4 defense, Kampman doesn't.

Culpepper buys you a year until you get to next year's superior draft. Also, they're closer on defense and would benefit from picking Aaron Curry, who I just heard called the best overall pick by somebody on ESPN (it was on in the background).

I'm not saying Stafford's a bad pick, I'm saying he's a bad pick for the Lions. They could build legitimacy quicker with an improved defense being coached by a guy who coached one of the best defenses in the league last year.

If the Jets draft a Wide Receiver, Jet fans better be prepared for a very long season.

The Lions should have taken Aaron Curry witht he 1st pick, an offensive tackle with the 20th pick, and then used the majority of there other picks on defense. With better blocking, there offense would be competent with Culpepper for a year, and then they could have grabbed there QB next year.

With that said, I have more hope for the Lions than I do the Rams. I wouldn't want to touch the Rams with the roster they have and the holes they have.

The Titans have now come up as a team for Anquan Boldin. I still believe if the Titans don't get him threw the deal, they'll draft one in the first round. They are trying very hard to acquire one.

The Jets trying to get to 2 and draft Sanchez it appears

Players I would love to have are Tyson Jackson, Robert Ayers, Coye Francies or Ziggy Hood. The first two we would have to have a first rounder.

The draft is less than 12 hours away. I'm so excited I can't even sleep. I have to work in 2 hours. I'll be back home at 2:30 for pre-draft disscusion.

I like Jackson and Francis, but something about Ayers tells me he is going to be a bust, and I'm never to high on Big 12 defensive players like Hood.

As the two Panther fans here, I'm so worried about our defense. I'll admit it, I'm kinda freaking out right now. We have a good foundation in Beason, Davis, Gamble, Charles Johnson, Marshall, and Harris, but we need some help and an attitude change. Our defense has slowly but surely played softer and softer since 2005, and that really came to a head during the 2nd half of last season. We have got to become tougher and more aggressive on defense, I'm to the point now were I cna't stand the passive approach Fox takes with the defense. Like I said before, I think we need a DE, DT, OLB, 3rd Corner, and then another DE. What do you about trying Hilee Taylor at OLB? And I don't want Peppers back, to me, he is the face of everything that has been wrong the last few years, the man is inconsistent and passive. I like tough, hard nosed football players who give it there all every snap. As far as which position i wouldn't mind seeing passed over, it would be 3rd Corner. I don't really like taking rookie corners, and we can sign a guy like Mike McKenzie as our number three. I'd like to see Marshall get a full season as starter,

On the flip side, I'm not worried at all about our offense. We need some line depth sure, but I like Geoff Schwartz and Mackenzy Bernadeau. I'd actually like to see Schwartz get a shot at taking Keydrick Vincents spot at RG. We can grab a guy like Fenuki Topou or Robert Brester late, and sign a veteran or two in June. I'll say this though, if Herman Johnson is there in the 4th, I want him. I haven't given up on Dwayne Jarrett yet, or RB's are amazing, our line is set, and despite how I flipped out about the Delhomme contract a few days ago, I'm fine with him as a starter this season, I just want to start thinking about the future here soon, everyone else is getting younger, I'd like to as well.

My issues with our team comes from the passive style of play, particularly on Defense. The last time we were tough defensively, we had a healthy Dan Morgan, Will Witherspoon, Chris Draft, Brenston Buckner, Al Wallace, Marlon McRee, and that big tub of baby turds known as Kris Jenkins.

They still will have a combined six starts among QB's. I think Jason Campbell is a consolation prize for the Jets if they can't move to 2.
