One other issue I would have with starting Stafford, even if he is better than Culpepper, is that unlike in Atlanta, Detroit doesn't have a solid running game as of right now to take pressure off the pass. Atlanta picked up Michael Turner last year while Detroit doesn't have a true number one running back right now. That would be my other worry in starting Stafford this year over Culpepper.

Kevin Smith is a number one running back. He finished just short of 1,000 yards, and only had 238 carries.

By comparison, Michael Turner had 376 carries, and their yards per carry averages (4.1 for Smith, 4.5 for Turner) aren't even drastically different. Turner had the benefit of a legitimate quarterback.

I'll give you that. I didn't have the stats handy, and it's easy for any bright spot to get lost in Detroit. I still don't like starting Stafford if he beats out Culpepper at mini-camp and preseason but who knows, he could throw a touchdown pass on his first throw of the regular season too (metaphorically speaking as well as physically.)

Detroit has a better number one receiver then Atlanta.

I really believe Sanchez should get as many looks as Stafford does, if they decide on drafting a quarterback. I wouldn't worry so much about that yet because they do have Culpepper for this season, next years quarterback class looks better, so I'd try my hardest to trade that pick. If they build the line and maybe add a weapon or two, then next year they could make a run at a more talented quarterback.

Stafford really hasn't impressed me the way everyone else seems. I really think an offensive identity needs to be established before they decide on a quarterback to perform. If they got Cutler, then I'd form my identity around him the way Dungy did for Manning. That's really not an option for a rookie.

If the Lions pick Sanchez over Stafford then they're idiots. There are plenty of good OT's in the draft. They CAN wait on one untill the 20th pick. If they choose not to take Stafford, then they will miss out on one of the best QB's to come out of the draft in quite some time. We don't know how Sam Bradford or Colt McCoy are going to perform this coming season or how they'll handle the off-season and the pressure of coming into the NFL. Right now, IMO, Stafford has handled it perfectly.

Neither Tebow, Bradford or McCoy are as good of Pro-Ready NFL QB's than Stafford is. None of them have played in a pro offense.

Most reports that i've read, pretty much says next years crop of Qb's are weak. Some scouts don't even think Tebow is an NFL QB.

Last year was the year of running backs, this is the year of wide recievers/offensive lineman; 04 was the year of QB's, 2006 was the year of hype, and next year 2010 draft class is the gonna be year of freaks. I know there are dazzling playmaking freaks every year, but next year is out of this world. You got:

JAHVID BEST, rb, Cal: My prediction for the Heisman trophy. Kid averaged 8.2 ypc (had 1,600 on 192 carries) and is absolutley electrifyingly fast. Hes coming off the best sophmore season an running back has had since Reggie Bush's back in 2004.

^I seriously urge any football fan to watch that reel; this kid is simply unreal.

Arrelious Benn, WR, Illinois: One of the best wr's in the country last year as a sophmore. He is a straight up beast.

C.J. SPILLER, rb, Clemson: Another burner. He doesnt get the ball too often but when he does, hes like a bolt of lightening. Like Jahvid Best, he is breathtakingly fast. Both will run sub 4.3s at the combine, it will be very interesting to see whose faster.

Jonathan Dyer, RB, Georgia Tech: Best pure running back of next year, a lot like Moreno this year.

Dez Bryant, WR, Oklahomah: next years physical freak wide reciever:

Taylor Mays, S, USC: Absolute beast of a safety who runs a 4.3; he is probably the best NFL prospect USC has had since Carson Palmer.

Then you have the star qb's like Tim Tbow, Sam Bradford, Jimmy Clausen. Those are the real biggies, but you also got Noel Devine, who (especially if Darren Sproles has the year some think he will) could be top 10 or day 2 but will likely destroy all the combines agility records interms of fastest times, Jermaine Gresham is a 6'6 tight end stud.

For real, this years draft sucks from a fan perspective, there are no real exciting players, BUT 2010 with those guys will rival 2006, when you had Reggie Bush, Vince Young, Jay Cutler, Matt leinart, Vernon Davis, Laurence Maroney, Santonio Holmes, DeAngelou Williams, Joseph Addai ALL in the 1st round.

Clausen is a huge star; hes was one of the most talked about prospects out of high school ever. Give him a few games next season like his bowl game and hes a first rounder easy. Stats shmats, he still has the best physical tools of anybody in a while. Like Sanchez this year, Clausen will be the face a simply loaded team thatll likely start in the top 25; they are a lot of peoples picks for a big surprise.

Claussen, Bradford, and Tebow dont have a prayer of playing QB in the NFL. Hell Claussen hasnt even had a successful college career. His days of recrutiing hype are LONG gone.

I actually see a lot of potential in Bradford. He's got the raw talent necessary, he just needs to prove that he has the football I.Q. Even Matt Stafford has a long way to go here, but he's projected as the first overall.

Why is it that you don't believe in Bradford?

Scott Wright of Draftcountdown.com has stated that if Colt, Bradford and Tebow had entered the 2009 draft, all of them would be ranked behind Josh Freeman.

Physical tools does not equate production or quality. Clausen is a huge underachiever and there is no reason to think he will suddenly "get it" in the Pro's if he can't in college.

Matt Stafford's football I.Q. is exponentially higher than Bradford simply due to the system he runs. Bradford runs a spread offense, and all of his pre-snap reads and audibles are done...by the coaches on the sidelines. The guy doesn't read his own defenses! Stafford, by comparison, has been in a Pro Style offense playing against SEC defenses.

Why is it that you don't believe in Bradford?

I want to see him play in a Pro Offense before I put any faith in him.

On the subject of Bradford, I agree with Norman. It completely stunts the growth of a quarterback if he's in an offense that requires him to look to the sideline before the snap to get the adjustment that the coaches call for him.

Bradford, honestly, is a lot like Colt Brennan. Brennan has the talent to be an NFL QB. Bradford has the talent to be an NFL QB. Both of their transitions to the NFL is hindered by the system they used in college.

Luckily for Bradford Oklahoma has far more tradition and prestige than Hawaii. That will give Bradford an unearned advantage over Brennan.

Rhett Bomar
Jason White
Nate Hybl
Josh Heupel, etc.

Come to think of it has Oklahoma ever produced a quality NFL QB?

No.

To be fair though, like Colt Brennan, Bradford is more talented than those others.

Rhett Bomar has no business being on that list though. I think he is more likely to be an NFL Starter than Josh Freeman or Bradford. Ironically Bomar being kicked out of OU may of helped him more in the long run.

Hell Claussen hasnt even had a successful college career.

Not yet. I see Clausen having a monster season next year.

I dont think Bradford will amount to jack; Tebow I dunno depends where he goes. Clausen however atleast has the physical tools to be an elite qb, which is more than those 2 have.

Comparing the 2009 and 2010 QB crops together with the group selected in 2004:

2009 and 2010:

- Matt Stafford
- Mark Sanchez
- Josh Freeman
- Colt McCoy (2010)
- Tim Tebow (2010)
- Sam Bradford (2010)
- Casey Clausen (2010)

It's an impressive list of college Quarterbacks, with numerous awards and honors among this group. However, I doubt that within five years, that many of these guys will be going to numerous Pro Bowls, winning Super Bowls, having an impact on their teams or even starting, like the class of 04. At the most, two of these guys will have nice careers, although right now, it's hard to tell which ones.

2004:

- Eli Manning
- Phillip Rivers
- Ben Roethlisberger
- JP Losman
- Matt Schaub
- Luke McCown

Except for Losman, this is a great group. Manning, Rivers and Roethlisberger have been to Pro Bowls. Eli and Big Ben have won Super Bowls. Schaub, when healthy is a pretty good QB. McCown has shown potential in spurts. Out of those six, five of them are starters (McCown is going to compete for the starting job). Losman is the worst of this group and he's solid at best.

2004 draft has five starters, the combined 2009-2010 may have three at the most (Stafford, Sanchez and one of the 2010 guys).
