61 Nights of Halloween, 2023 Edition

Jocelin Donahue is a forever girl in that and every other movie I've seen her. :atp:

Will be seeing her tonight in Doctor Sleep.
Still waiting for Blumhouse or Wan/Whannell realize they could make an Insidious prequel starring her.

The Italian Job/The Getaway style heist flick meets Re-Animator/Night of the Living Dead style flick? Yes please.

I shouldn't have waited so long to rewatch this. It needs a proper BD release.

How you watch Junk, NDX?

How you watch Junk, NDX?
I got a used DVD copy a few years back as a gift (after finding a used copy for the same friend at Mondo Kim's a few years earlier). Been collecting dust waiting for me to finally watch it.

Looks like the DVD is OOP and going for a higher than usual price, unfortunately. And I'm not seeing anywhere it might be streaming.

Man, this was really messed up, but its exactly the kind of horror film you would want to watch on a bigscreen in a packed theater just to see those reactions to all the crazy, carnage onscreen. After seeing so much generic crap for what feels like weeks its really refreshing seeing a brutal flick like this that isn't afraid to pull any punches and doesn't feel compromised or watered down by the studio. It definitely won't be for everybody due to the amount of graphic and pretty shocking levels of violence but I really enjoyed it from beginning to end.

I was already impressed with this director's previous film Terrified and after seeing this I definitely think he's going places and I'd love it if they got him to direct a segment for a V/HS/ film or something.

Well that was boring. Similarly shot remake that lacks the charm and energy of the original.

38. Five Nights at Freddy's (2023) dir. Emma Tammi

Quote of the film: "Har har har har har"

It's okay. I don't feel particularly strongly about it. I feel like the movie's biggest issue is it doesn't commit to catering to a particular audience, so it floats in the awkward middle area. Should've either leaned more into the actual horror and try to do an R-rated nightmare, or doubled down on attracting the younger audience by pumping up the fun.

Either way, decent time with my friends laughing at the animatronic moments, which are the highlight. Couldn't have cared less about the central arc of the main character, but the little girl was cute.

The Normies are always a go to for reactions. I've been loving their Boondocks reactions.

Yeah I am currently loving their Buffy reactions.

I'm glad I'm not the only person on here who watches reactions. It wasn't until a week or two ago while watching a An American Werewolf In London reaction that I realized that Alex says I thought I heard voices after David is talking to Jack in her apartment. I like watching reactions as it's a way to relive experiencing movies for the first time. Also see people react to things like David's transformation can be fun. Although it is quit surprising how many people not only don't realize David is dreaming but think it's Jack in his first two dreams.

Double Feature because yesterday i was too busy and had no time to post about it.

Night 27...oh the Horror

Hellraiser Revelations

How...how do you manage to make the worst Hellraiser movie after seeing the low bar the ones before had?
How do you not manage to avoid making the Absolute worst of the bunch when you got so many examples?
You had 6 movies to look at and see what sucks about them...why did they still make the absolute worst Hellraiser movie?
I dont get it.
This was bad...like, really really bad.
So bad...oh god was that bad.
Dare i say the worst Movie in my Marathon ever? Maybe top ten easily.
Awful, just so very awful.

Night 28...the Bride of the Monster.

The Bride of Frankenstein

Oh man, that was fun.
Feels very underrated this movie, because there was a lot there that was so entertaining.
Big shout out to Elsa Lanchester who did so well as the Bride in the very few scenes the character had.
Her mannerism and look are so well done...its very memorable and shows her talent.
She was able to give this character with what? 5 minutes of screentime, so much.
Its a very entertaining movie imo not enough people talk about.

Ginger Snaps (2000)

Yet another cult favourite that has somehow eluded me, and this one was also worth the wait :word:

It's odd that I had never seen this classic Canadian film, considering it was basically shot in my backyard. My expectations were high and thankfully I wasn't disappointed...

A notoriously difficult production (the Canadian movie industry was much more conservative in those days than the American equivalent) and a box office disappointment upon initial release, the film has since gained significant cult traction on home video, leading to a mini franchise. I haven't seen the other two Ginger films but the original boasts strong characters, some cool practical effects, and tons of the red stuff for gore hounds. The puberty/menstrual metaphor is obvious but the simple fact that something this gonzo even got made in such a stuffy, square film industry (thankfully that's been somewhat rectified in recent days) is cause for celebration.

It occurred to me while watching this how relatively few classic werewolf movies there are in relation to vampire flicks. Aside from An American Werewolf in London and The Howling I can't think of a ton more off the top of my head...

Which also reminds me, I really need to finally watch Dog Soldiers one of these days...

25. The Prophecy III: Ascent.

Well, if the last movie ripped off Terminator, this one was ripping off T2. In a whole lot of ways. And whats worse, not nearly enough Walken. Plus, you waste Chucky.

Everything The Nun films should have been IMO, but then again when you actually have a talented director like Paco Plaza at the helm you usually get good results. This was pretty much what I wanted from both Nun films in terms of atmosphere, creepy visuals and scares. Thankfully, they don't show too much and actually hold back just enough when it comes to certain scenes involving the supernatural elements.

There also aren't any cheap jumpscares in this which was a huge relief for me personally although some might not like how dependent it is on dream sequences eventhough it didn't really bother me. I never even knew this film existed until yesterday but its definitely a welcomed surprise and worth checking out.

Pretty much a Turkish adaptation of The Frankenstien story that is actually pretty faithful to the source material from what I remember but also takes plenty of liberties with the material as well. I enjoyed it for what it was but don't go into expecting a whole lot of horror stuff because its definitely more of a drama.

Was thinking about doing Sister Death this week, as I had one slot open. But then I found out it's a prequel to another flick and I didn't want to do them out of order of release. Good to see it will be worth the investment in the future.

AKA s*** hits the fan. Brutal and bleak possession film, chock full of shocking images.

So yeah, fun for the whole family. :o

One more week down, some more favourites from it:

Annihilation (2018) dir. Alex Garland
14477c6340549b443f47d6ae7e5d7f3afc4957cd.gif

Alex Garland's masterpiece in my book. An unnerving, gorgeous exploration of what makes us ourselves and at what comes out the other side of traumatic experiences.

The Babadook (2014) dir. Jennifer Kent
072b7ce5051a3f0f167275b55754da3bc0d4456c.gif

I bought the hand-made book when this came out and I think it's one of the coolest things I own.

The Batman (2022) dir. Matt Reeves
aba585506b6c04c0f621753e3d71f32bfebf95a1.gif

I will never be over Gordon's insistence on calling Batman "man." It is one of the funniest things I've ever heard in my life. It's like he's routinely just trying to be casual work buds and Batman's too busy being emo and listening to Nirvana to be into it.

Doctor Sleep (2019) dir. Mike Flanagan
bc65749f19c467b143ac8db4a595dea36eefdb52.gif

The first two and a half hours or so are electric. Flanagan's command of the material wins me over on a story I wasn't feeling from the premise. The cast is all top notch and Ferguson makes for one of the most compelling cinematic villains of recent years. The last half hour or so though is a bit rough. Like a theme park ride of The Shining, with ideas that don't feel fully fleshed out. And yet, those first two hours do such an incredible job at making something emotionally compelling and stylistically distinct while effectively recalling the original film that I can't help but love this. It might be Flanagan's messiest cinematic outing due to that last act, but it's also his most ambitious and interesting, closest to his TV shows - which I consider to be his finest work.

Oh, and director's cut all the way here.

Fear Street 1994 (2021) dir. Leigh Janiak
6a0719812c2f77f9e30f4c68bf96d211c6334461.gif

Since 2021, it's not Halloween if I don't watch my gay ****.

The Guest (2014) dir. Adam Wingard
cc912e04872d6341665ceddae46cabe0a8c831d3.gif

Tight and doesn't waste a second, The Guest clicks together just right and Dan Stevens is electric.

Halloween Kills (2021) dir. David Gordon Green
dbd45790c4d61c96c61cfff58477953854a3872a.gif

This movie's hysterical.

Halloween Ends (2022) dir. David Gordon Green
bb3a4830ba27889830a2db86ef4a3a0d03a7fd18.gif

I'm not really a Halloween person. The original is good, a classic, has its place in film history. But it doesn't do much for me. This though? This is great. Biggest problem though is it'd be improved if Michael turned out to have died in the sewers between films.

Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988) dir. Stephen Chiodo
b46ce7a8e2dd798cc514e91bb740778fede50c50.gif

Look at it. How could I not love it?

The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) dir. Henry Selick
9aba84c7b0b50dd71d22cfaa6f86762e82d76980.gif

Always nice to see a re-release in theaters. I find this one fun, if not terribly substantial. It doesn't hit any emotional points in me, the characters aren't particularly great imo, but I really enjoy it all the same. It's fun and it doesn't overstay its welcome.

One Cut of the Dead (2017) dir. Shinichiro Uedo
a5a6e31e835141dee8ec9112694de9b6cef6661e.gif

The first half hour is a fun time. The second half hour is better. The last act of this is absolutely a blast that had me rolling start to finish.

The Shining (1980) dir. Stanley Kubrick
5c3972bece13ba43c52b722c7b415ada84c17bcb.gif

The use of the then-new steadicam in this movie is absolutely to die for.

The Thing (1982) dir. John Carpenter
d9ae0f88299f4131f08761b008b7cb75a8256dcc.gif

It's a pretty good, little-seen film. Recommend this overlooked gem, maybe some day people will have heard of it.

Werewolf by Night (2022) dir. Michael Giacchino
e89c5f012ce97e3f0d77d98f6374cb53d9ffd596.gif

Most Marvel things I enjoy have an asterisk next to them. I call that movie or that show great, but it's great for Marvel. I wouldn't put any Marvel movies in my favourite films. This is an exception to that. No asterisk, this is just killer.

First time I've ever seen this. Some of the EFX have not aged well, but overall an entertaining flick.

Been a good month getting a lot of new movies off my neverending pile, whether the films were bad or good.
