61 Nights of Halloween (2025 Edition)

Night 32

76. Cronos (1993) dir. Guillermo del Toro

Bite-Sized Review: A strong start, with plenty of room to improve. Wonder if he will? :o

77. Mimic (1997) dir. Guillermo del Toro

Bite-Sized Review: This film is an odd marriage of a young GDT still finding his voice and Hollywood expectations. Easily his weakest leads, leading to what feels like an aimless film. Still, the signs are there.

**3/4

78. Bride of Frankenstein (1935) dir. James Whale
e3915818f6541dceedc586e6135ea9a4efc19ca2.gifv

Bite-Sized Review: I assume the first film was a shock to the system of audiences at the time. Something that felt fresh and bat****. So I can't imagine how they reacted to the actual bat**** sequel, that burns so much brighter.

****1/4

79. Ghost Killer (2025) dir. Kensuke Sonomura (NEW)
5f1345e790a1bf790f2468aa390e5429ed12fb16.gifv

Bite-Sized Review: Missing the naturalistic absurdity of the Baby Assassins movies, it still delivers the action in spades.

Best way to start off October is with a true classic. One of the most quotable movies, up there with other 80's classics like Princess Bride for me. Never gets old.

12. Y2K (2024)

I was promised a zany stoner horror comedy and that is not what I got. Rachel Zegler and Julian Dennison are both perfect, but the former is stuck with a bland character and Dennison is killed off inexcusably early. The main problem here though is that Mooney has taken a comedy pitch and made a painfully unfunny movie, mixing in awkward attempts at commentary on everything from teen stereotypes to technology dependency. Every time it seems like it's about to get entertaining, it grinds to the halt for a clumsy attempt at a Serious Dramatic Moment. Big disappointment.

13. Heart Eyes (2025)

Thank goodness for Mason Gooding and Olivia Holt, because with lesser leads this would have ended up in the Hall of Shame for bad movies that waste amazing killer designs. The script is flimsy - the kills are too few and far between and the third act is a mess - but the main "couple" fully sell it. Gooding and Holt are very entertaining, and their comic instincts vibe well with Ruben's style, making it easy to root for them. All in all, it's a shame it underperformed, because I'd totally be down for a series of these. Anything to save Gooding from the sinking ship of the Scream franchise.

14. Time Cut (2024)

Big "Antz" vibe from this one, like someone at Netflix overheard the vague premise of Totally Killer and stole it for their afternoon pitch. Some decent performances from the young cast save it from being a total wash, but there's not much going on here. No actual engagement with early 2000's culture other than needle drops, and the killer is barely present. Just totally forgettable stuff from the streaming content farm.

I've had a craving for Clue already several times, but I'll have to wait until my 4K arrives on the 20th. Such a fun film.

October 2nd:
M3GAN 2.0 (2025)

megan-two-point-o-xlg.jpg

I certainly wasn't planning on rewatching M3GAN 2.0 so soon, but a friend wanted to see it, and I got an excuse to check out the unrated cut. It's still a slog, clocking in at over two hours. It isn't nearly as campy as the trailers promised, and almost all the horror elements from the first M3GAN are gone.

The unrated cut adds a touch more gore into the mix, but the effect is minimal. M3GAN herself is still a bad b — but she's sidelined and softened beyond belief. Let her slay, you cowards.

October 3rd:
The Human Centipede 3 (Final Sequence) (2015)

57.jpg

Dieter Laser shrieks for 103 minutes while Tom Six throws everything he can at the audience in an attempt to offend. He fails — it's too trite, too tired, to provoke any real reaction. Somehow, it's also the longest film ever made.
