The Thing

First goddamn week of winter.

Just so happens that my place got hit with a super cold front... so this rewatch was perfect timing. I finally got to use my 4K copy to watch this and the transfer looks so good. As always, this movie is a masterpiece and it's still my favorite horror film alongside with The Mist (which I will be seeing tomorrow).

Man I wish I had time to include this in my marathon, it's been a while since I've rewatched David goin ham on secret soldiers and [Haunted When The Minutes Drag] plays while he gives the Kubrick stare.

Yeah, it's a great time. We always do it in the few days leading up to Halloween. It's a total staple now.

26. The Prophecy: Uprising

Yeah, remember that period when Dimension Films was breaking out old properties to make DTV movies for Syfy. Yeah, Prophecy was one. I like that it deals with demons and the devil more than the usual angel stuff.

27. The Prophecy: Forsaken

Gets a bit back into traditional Prophecy tropes, and Tony Todd is never a bad choice for your villain. Tries to add more lore than was needed. And you know you are in a low budget movie when you have Jason Scott Lee.

Doing one last Tubi Trawl. A really weird ****ing movie. I was intrigued by the premise of a group of people trying to survive on a river, but they rarely are on the river. Props for using practical when stuff is shown. But dear god, nearly nothing is. I swear I looked away and missed 2 deaths, because they never appeared again. Nothing it explained, even when there is a weird as ****, out of place appearance of a force ghost of their dead friend. Tried some weird semi found footage, mainly to old man yell at clouds about influencer culture? Sometimes, the Tubi Trawl just gives you a bad movie.

This will be a hot take but overall this is just ok. I don’t remember watching this very much as a child, so there’s no nostalgia for me. Lots of repetitive singing, not enough substance in the plot or characters. A fun watch though not something I’d ever willingly see again.

Night 29 we got to Space...with a Hockey Mask.

Jason X

Its Jason Voorhees in space...thats about it.
Like, at this point the Movies are so weird and dumb that putting Jason into Space isnt as dumb as it should be.
So it kind of works.
Its incredible dumb...but fun on its own.
It is a dumb slasher with a incredible dumb plot...but its weirdly entertaining.

I’m planning to watch Coppola’s Dracula again really soon. I realized that I didn’t own it, so ordered the Blu-ray and am expecting it to come in tomorrow.

Speaking of Coppola…

This was his attempt at a Hitchcock/Bava psychological thriller. To me it’s not as successful for a variety of reasons. Mostly because it feels like a first draft story idea and it’s rough around the edges in terms of production value. And at only 75 minutes, there wasn’t enough time to develop anything. To me it’s still worth watching just because I like these types of stories.

Quote of the film: "What is it art or something?"

You know what's a great idea? Shooting a movie, and then having a completely different cast and crew reshoot inserts to change the plot. A chaotic result and one of the funniest movies I've ever seen in my life.

The Mist

It can't be my horror marathon without The Mist. This was still hauntingly beautiful to watch again for the millionth time in black and white as Frank Darabont intended, this time in 4K. The 4K release does wonders for a lot of the shots that require a lot of shadows and depth of field not to mention the black-and-white version hiding the less-than-stellar cgi shots of the creatures. And while people love to mention how bleak the ending is, I still think they don't give enough love to the story and characters that lead up to that moment. It's such a perfect and horrific portrait of humanity and what it can do in the face of fear.

Well, I didn't hate it but its definitely inferior to the original film in almost every way. I actually forgot there was a French remake of One Cut of the Dead which is a great film btw that everyone should check out instead of this which is sadly a mostly uninspired, scene for scene remake of that film. I kind of liked the quirky, oddball French style humor though but it was definitely more miss than hit in terms of humor.

A much-needed return to form for this franchise after two back-to-back disappointing sequels. I honestly don't think there is anything left to tell in this universe, but I also get the feeling that it won't end here. I really like that first film too which is still one of the best-found footage horror films out there and while this doesn't quite reach those heights its still a very atmospheric and creepy ride.

They probably rely a little too heavily on the creepy ass clowns again, but damn are they still scary asf and this director just knows how to build tension and suspense.

I completely missed out on One Cut of the Dead but I did see Final Cut instead and enjoyed it. I'm assuming One Cut is better but I feel like knowing what actually happens might take away from the surprise.

The performances are so good in the original, that it might just be worth it.
