Comics 7 reasons why you should be Reading Spider-Man

It's rather hilarious that 6 of the 7 stories are from 1984 and before...

:yay:

It's basically a list outlining to people who may know the character but never read the books, a feel as to what makes Spider-Man the character he is. a group of stories that help a new reader to the series better understand the character and relate to the issues.

The basic elements that made him great are rarely touched upon in the latter day books.

I was beginning to think I was the only one who thought that.

You are not alone man.

That was the time when Spidey was being written from writers that understood the character with passion and the world around him. They didn't needed magical stuff or revamp a entire past storyline/character to bring us fantastic adventures.

Sure there's some good arcs here and there but not consistent as the first ASM run.

I agree.

I look past some of the corny or cheesy material that makes the original comics unbearable for some people. I understand the context of the time period it was in, and it actually makes me enjoy the comics more because I feel closer to that era.

I haven't reread some of recent issues like I have revisited the original run, either.

By the way, just noticed the signature man! I am truly humbled :toth

*Sheds tear of joy*

WHOLEHEARTEDLY agree with this...

I'm glad to know Uncle Ben isn't the only old soul around here.

you've got me and Themanofbat and Donald Thomas here in the Spidey forums that are those old souls that you're talking about... glad to have you on board...

That's great to know, I'll keep that in mind

I've been skimming through a bunch of the original TASM issues for a few weeks now. I'm at it right now as well.

good reading there... if I get the urge, I always grab up my Spidey Omnibuses for a good read and an occasional Masterworks that go beyond TASM #67...

Very nice.

I only have Vol. #1-3 in Masterworks so far. You have to bust the bank for them, but I slowly hope to collect more.

What are some modern adaptations that you've enjoyed, if any? I've always wanted to ask that to an old soul.

I've been gradually disappointed over the last several years with the book and I've found recent issues of the book to be thoroughly disappointing, storywise and especially art-wise... I'm kind of known for my disenchantment of the title and the treatment of the characters...

Personally I thought Spider-Island was awful, just another one of those bloated stories with too many characters that has become so common these days and for me a reminder of the 90's and stories like Maximum Carnage. I'd have Kraven's Last Hunt instead.

You are rightful in your place to feel that way, as I haven't enjoyed some of the recent adaptations either.

Are there any villains from the original TASM that you think would work in a Spider-Man movie today? Other than the ones that have already been used, that is.

I thought of someone last night that nobody talks about, but I'll share with you once I get your opinion.

for one, I think the Vulture could work, or Mysterio, Shocker and the Prowler, but after seeing how characters are totally and completely transformed for a movie, and look unrecognizable from their comicbook apopearance, I have no high hopes... the movie Goblins sucked, I thought... Doc Ock looked fantastic... the Sandman looked OVERLY too good, he's the SandMAN, not the Sandmonster, and the less said about the Rhino, the better...

Funnily enough, I'm currently writing an article based on what Spidey characters would NOT work in a movie setting for the Web-site i write for. during the research for that you wouldn't believe the names of some villains that get put forward. i mean there are people out there that want Hydro-Man, Carrion, Hammerhead. i swear some people want a Spider-Man movie to fail

I'm a huge advocator of Mysterio and Vulture on here. I was wondering if you would pick any out of some of the mainstream choices, as I can see you did with Shocker and Prowler. Although, recently I've seen Shocker floating around in a few threads.

Don't know if I'll say Goblin sucks in TASM series yet, as he just dawned upon us. Maybe his development, in some ways, but I can't judge the overall character. I used to love the original Goblin growing up, but I can see he wasn't all that great in retrospect.

I accidentally said villain earlier, but the one character in general I would like to see is Daredevil. I think a tremendous arc could be utilized from his story of blindness in the comics. If Spidey ever teams up with another superhero and they want to see his universe expand, Daredevil would be one of my choices along with the Fantastic Four and Avengers.

I think some of the names stem from hardcore comic fans. Quite frankly, some just don't see how terrible of a transition some of these villains would make into a modern-day audience.

Nail hit head, that's basically the crux of the article. whereas it's easy to say well in terms of antagonistic prowess for example Carrion offers an interesting threat due to the any and everything he touches withers and dies. that's make an interesting foe for SPidey to face off against on s
screen whereas The reality is it's be corny and hokey

Exactly.

I understand the comic-crusaders, honestly.

I received my first comic book when I was eight years old, from my uncle. A few other issues since then got passed down to me and I fell in love with the original TASM series. No matter how many adaptations there are, nothing will come even close to what that series means for some fans like me.

I would love to see, in a perfect world, all these characters in a movie; but it's important to understand the demand of modern-day audiences and look past the biases that come with being a comic fan.

Also, I don't mean to double post, but this thought occurred to me earlier:

It would be epic to see a Spider-Man movie in which Spidey is rescuing a man and they capture a shot of him striking the same post as the cover of Amazing Fantasy #15.

I don't know why that has yet to be done, but it would be great to see it; preferably in the first movie of a reboot/relaunch.

Agreed it would seem we share an almost symetrical Spider-Path.
