Sorry if this has already been posted.

I am going to start reading spider-man comics and was reading about the different types on this forum and was getting very confused.

Please could you tell me what the different types of spider-man comics are and a brief description of what the comics are focused on.

P.S. By type i mean set of comics e.g. the amazing spider-man

Amazing Spider-Man: Peter is Iron Man's whipping boy and has no balls.

Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man: Increasingly strange stories that deviate from th' main plots of th' MU at th' moment.

Sensational Spider-Man: Stories done by a guy who respects continuity and characters, probably yer best bet.

Marvel Adventures Spider-Man: All-ages retellings of classic Spidey stories and some new ones thrown in. Haven't read 'em, heard good things, though.

Honorable mention: Spider-Girl: As close to classic Spidey yer gonna get today.

Okay thank you for replying

two more questions;

what is ultimate spiderman?

is sensational spiderman the same as spectacular spiderman?

Oh yeah, Ultimate is Spidey from the beginning reimagined and updated fer the 21st Century. It sucks.

And I guess ya can say that.

There have been many spider-man titles down the years and spectacular is an old one that is no longer going. sensational spider-man started in 1996 and was stopped sometime near the start of this milleniun. Recently Marvel Knights Spider-Man (MKSM) was retitled Sensational Spider-Man at issue number 23, so if you want to collect all of the current series you'll havta look for MKSM.

Ultimate Spider-Man is the reinvention of spider-man set in the "ultimate" universe, another world where all the classic heroes and villains have had their stories retold for the modern generation. There's only one ultimate spider-man series and it's up to issue 97 (??) methinks.
This usually gets recommended for new readers but personally i say get amazing spider-man. it's the core title, working on the original spider-man.peter is married to mary jane and is an avenger, although they're currently embroiled in a civil war, and spider-man doesnt wear his classic suit at the moment (although its supposed to brought back soon).
In ultimate SM pete is still a teenager, and is currently dating the x-man kitty pryde. he is also apparently is naff at fighting half his villains but if you want simpler, more 'classical' spider-man stories this is the place to be.

Seeing as there are over 500 comic issues for amazing spider-man do you think it would be too hard to catch up with what was in the previous 500+ books?

It's not too difficult, unless by "catch-up" you mean to read every single comic released up to this point. Honestly, the Ultimate line is your best bet. Great stories, great art, and you can collect the TPBs/hardcovers to catch up rather quickly.

Is it possible to get TPB's for the amazing spider-man?

there's an "essentials" collection, reprinting them in balck and white. other than that there are trades of more modern stories which, with knowledge you can find on wikipedia, will bring you up to date. so you dont really need their "essentials" line, but its up to you.

First of all, if you want the real Spidey, get these current titles:

Amazing Spider-man
Friendly Neighborhood Spider-man
Sensational Spider-man

A good idea is to get the 50 years CD. It has every issue of Amazing 1-500.
Currently Amazing is on 534, so you'll have almost every issue of the main ongoing title since the beginning. You can read about past events at Spiderfan.org for the other titles. Sensational and Friendly are relatively new compared to Amazing. Sensational used to be called Marvel Knights Spiderman before issue 23. So look for those at spiderfan.org under the core tiles in the comics section to read up on them.

Just go to ur comic shop, pic up the current story arc issues, and your all set.

BTW, Spider-man just revealed his identity to the world so all the titles will be focusing on the effects of that for a while.

You'll probably want to look for these issues when you go to the comic store so you dont get the end of a story arc and you can start fresh.

Amazing
#532
#533
#534(coming soon)

Friendly Neighborhood
#11(coming soon)

Sensational
#28
#29(coming soon)

Are the essential books basically a summary of the comics?

essentials are big reprints of loads of issues (their volumes are still covering some quite old stuff.) Its all in black and white so its cheap

I would reccomend Ultimate - it'll be easier to catch up with, and the fact that it starts over from the begining makes it better for new readers, IMO.

I haven't read anything but Ultimate in some time. While it's not the classic, IMO, it's more true to the character - and updated for the 21st century, which is a good thing, IMO.

you shouldn't go around throwing words like "undisputed" and "fact" around, buddy. we don't take kindly to being told what to read round here.

Dear new reader... I feel your confusion. And I'll bet that this little thread hasn't made it any better has it? ;) :)

I was in your position a couple of years ago, and I'll tell you what I did to get on board. You are in for a REAL treat, as Spider-Man (overall) is an awesome character... I know I'm quite addicted!

I don't know how much you know about comics period... I knew nothing... so forgive me if I OVERexplain...

When I started reading I did two things:

1.) I picked up a couple of current titles (like" Amazing Spider-Man" and "Marvel Knights Spider-Man"), at the beginning of the most recent story "arc" (that's when a new story begins).

2.) I started at the very "beginning" of the character by getting the Essential Spider-Man Vols. (There are 7 out now)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0785109889/002-4594050-7604026?v=glance&n=283155

To really get a feel for the character you need to start at the beginning. The Essentials (Vols 1 - 7 of Amazing Spider-Man) are printed in B&W on newsprint, but that makes them affordable. Even though they are not in color, and elements of the stories (like the dialog and clothes) are dated (ASM started in 1963) the depth of character and charm shows through. I challenge you to read Vol. 1 and not go back for the rest!

There is another way to get all the back stories... On CD... which is not bad... but I was surprized at how much I prefer reading BOOKS I can hold (while lounging where ever I darn well please) as oposed to reading a book on a computer screen. It is a way to get a lot of history... I prefer the Essentials, but own this too.

The current Spider-Man titles are:

Amazing Spider-Man - This is the longest running title. It has been going since 1963, when it was written by the creators, Stan Lee (writer) and Steve Ditko (illustrator). Other writers and artist have carried on since then and today they are on issue #533. (There was a time when they tried to start over with #1/Vol.2... but people mostly hated it, and got confused, so with issue #500 went back to the original numbering.)

There is a synopsis om the Marvel website that contain major events in Spider-Man's life...
http://www.marvel.com/universe/Spider-Man_(Peter_Parker)

HOWEVER, be warned... there is a point in the not so distant past (2004) where the stories took a nose dive and it is rumored that some of the more offensive developments are going to recon'd (that is, redone, expained away or changed). Yea...

So when you start reading that Gwen Stacy (Peter's first love) cheated on him with his worst enemy, Norman Osborn, giving birth in secret to twins (Sarah and Gabriel) -- I'm not kidding -- KNOW that what you read from there on is subject to change! Two of the most HATED story arc in the history of Spider-Man happened in the past couple of years... "Sins Past" where they violated Gwen's character and "The Other" where they tried to change Spider-Man's origin to include a mystic spider-god and new "evolved" (read: stupid and out of character) powers.

Trade paperbacks, (that collect 5-6 single issues each), is another good way to collect stores that go back about 5 years. Start with "Coming Home" and skip "Sins Past."

The current story arc is "Civil War." It's a big crossover (in more than one title/book) event. Ask your friendly neighborhood comic store guy to show you which issues pertain to Spider-Man in the main story of the Civil War... like Amazing Spider-Man and Frontline.

Sensational Spider-Man: Used to be called Marvel Knights Spider-Man... just finshed a story arc, so should be starting a new one next month with #29. http://www.marvel.com/catalog/?id=4789

It's been ok... unoffensive at least... some really like it, but I'm not so thrilled with the artist.

If you want a really GOOD read (and don't let anyone tell you different...) pick up the Millar/Dodson issues (#1-12) of Marvel Knights Spider-Man. Wow! This was one of the stories that got me hooked. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/07...=pd_bbs_1/002-4594050-7604026?ie=UTF8&s=books

Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man:
The writer and artist on this title are really strong, Peter David and Ringo... two of the best... but the current story arc is strange. I haven't really gotten into the time traveling thing... and the last issue was really confusing. I think a new story starts next month. I'd check it out.
http://www.marvel.com/catalog/?id=4479

Ultimate Spider-Man: Set in a different "universe," in that it starts Spider-Man's story over, with a new, more contemporary take on the story, while keeping certain key elements of the mythos intact. It targets a younger audience, but I've been out of high school a few hundred years and I really like it too! Great relationship drama and angst to go with the battles...

Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane: Another out of continuity title, but a lot of fun. It tells the high school story of Peter and Mary Jane from MJ's point of view... but it's got great dialog and character development. It really pulls you in... I look forward to it every month.

Marvel Adventures Spider-Man: Spider-Man lite for a younger crowd. I like it for what it is. And Peter David is writing it now so it might improve.

Spider-Man Unlimited (Vol.3): New writters and artist get a shot with short stories. They are surprizingly good.

There is more information on each different title on this website:
http://www.spiderfan.org/comics/summary.html

There was a thread here recently about everyones favorite stories... might be interesting for you...

Any more questions? :)

Don't listen to this guy.

99% of the rest of the Spider-Man fan population believes Ultimate >>>>>>>> 616 Spidey books.

616 is the main Spider-Man universe that you know of...

Which comic is after volume 7 i.e. to carry on the story what comic number will i need to read?
Essential Spider-Man Vol. 7 takes you through ASM #160. You don't have to read EVERY issue to know what's going on today, but it is a fun goal.

Another main title that told some important stories was "Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man (PPSSM)." There are two Volumes of Essential PPSSM out so far.

This website has reviews and summaries if you're curious about any given issue. http://www.spiderfan.org/comics/title/spiderman_amazing.html

Here's a reading list that will keep you busy for a LONG time and give you a good foundation: Note: Check out ebay or the Amazon market place for good deals: ie. http://www.superherohype.com/forums/newreply.php?do=newreply&p=9647929

1.) Amazing Spider-Man Essentials (Vols. #1-7)

2.) Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man Essentials (Vol. #1-2)

3.) Amazing Spider-Man Graphic Novels by J. Michael Staczynski (the current writer of ASM):
Vol. 1, "Coming Home"
Vol. 2, "Revelations"
Vol. 3, "Until the Stars Turn Cold"
Vol. 4, "The Life and Death of Spiders"
Vol. 5, "Unintended Consequences"
Vol. 6, "Happy Birthday"
Vol. 7, "The Book of Ezekiel"
Vol. 10, "New Avengers"
4.) Marvel Knights Spider-Man (issues #1-12) by Mark Millar/Terry Dodson
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/07...=pd_bbs_1/104-6035943-6320746?ie=UTF8&s=books

5.) The Civil War (current event): It's complicated... READ THIS
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civil_War_(comics)
but don't worry so much about knowing all the characters... Spider-Man is your main focus. (That's how I look at it.)

I'm not getting every comic associated with the Civil War event (get real, too expensive), just Amazing Spider-Man, Civil War and New Avengers
