you've got me and Themanofbat and Donald Thomas here in the Spidey forums that are those old souls that you're talking about... glad to have you on board...
I agree.
I look past some of the corny or cheesy material that makes the original comics unbearable for some people. I understand the context of the time period it was in, and it actually makes me enjoy the comics more because I feel closer to that era.
I haven't reread some of recent issues like I have revisited the original run, either.
By the way, just noticed the signature man! I am truly humbled
*Sheds tear of joy*
WHOLEHEARTEDLY agree with this...
I'm a huge advocator of Mysterio and Vulture on here. I was wondering if you would pick any out of some of the mainstream choices, as I can see you did with Shocker and Prowler. Although, recently I've seen Shocker floating around in a few threads.
Don't know if I'll say Goblin sucks in TASM series yet, as he just dawned upon us. Maybe his development, in some ways, but I can't judge the overall character. I used to love the original Goblin growing up, but I can see he wasn't all that great in retrospect.
I accidentally said villain earlier, but the one character in general I would like to see is Daredevil. I think a tremendous arc could be utilized from his story of blindness in the comics. If Spidey ever teams up with another superhero and they want to see his universe expand, Daredevil would be one of my choices along with the Fantastic Four and Avengers.
I think some of the names stem from hardcore comic fans. Quite frankly, some just don't see how terrible of a transition some of these villains would make into a modern-day audience.
How quickly I'm forgotten...![]()
That cheesy is one of the things that make it even better
Don't cry *pats you on the shoulder*
in the comics, I've always looked forward to anytime that Spidey and Daredevil would team up, as they're the ones most suited to each other as true partners and have a good rapport with each other... each of their respective rogue's galleries could work with either one or the other... and they DO share a few of the same villains... and as for combining them in a movie, a lot of work has to be done with a proper treatment for Daredevil... then again, after the last couple of movies, as well as the last Raimi movie, Spidey needs to be retooled and worked on a bit better... what's always pissed me off ever since the start is how Spidey's origin and other events in Spidey's history has been tampered and tweaked the way it has... why can't we have the classic origin as it's portrayed in the comics?... granted, it has to be glamorized a bit to make it more exciting and eventful, I guess, but must it be tampered or altered with where it's a bit added with extraneous events?
as for the screen Goblins, I've never really gone for the look... Willem Dafoe was wonderful as Norman Osborn and I liked the working of the Goblin Glider itself, but the Goblin outfit was what I had a problem with, especially with that open-mouthed helmet... Doc Ock was done just perfectly, I thought... Venom was done good appearance-wise, but having dumbass playing Eddie Brock was a major mistake... Sandman's origin, though different from the comics, was an acceptable one where it worked, though having his origin intertwined with Spidey's and Uncle Ben was all wrong... the Lizard was the s**ts, as far as I'm concerned... Electro, meh... his characterization as a mild-mannered timid employee of Oscorp was done wrong, I thought... the Rhino, forget about it... I'm optimistic for the future, but I don't have high hopes... and why must EVERYTHING stem from OSCORP?!?... COME ON!...
ah, for the days when Ditko, Romita, Wood and Colan were doing the Spidey and DD books... I'm wondering who YOU think might be good for onscreen villains for Daredevil from his classic roster of villains..., me, I'll always go for the Gladiator...
That's what I say!
And thank you, kind sir
I can't tell you off the top of my head about Daredevil's appearances in more recent adaptations, but I do remember in TASM #16 (correct me if I'm wrong) he was first foreshadowed as a villain, but ultimately proved to be a hero as he literally saves Spidey in the issue. That was the first time they showed the entire public being threatened by a villain (The Ringmaster?), including Spidey; but Daredevil recognized the consequences and saved everyone. I also think he can relate to Peter at a personal level because he understands what it's like being at a disadvantage in his everyday life, at least prior to receiving his powers. Additionally, as if it even has to be said, Daredevil absolutely looks badass; that could really transition onscreen and make him very appealing.
In regards to the origin, I thought it was fine in this series, but I can understand what you're saying since I'm overall in favor of them trying to use the comics not just a reference for sequences of events; also, to be replicated in terms of the thematic feel of the film (the 60's environment, clothing on people, and possibly even the lingo). Also, it'll be interesting to see if we even get an origin story in a future reboot. The only way I can see it being done is if it's in a matter completely different from the original trilogy and the current series. Otherwise, however, I can see it getting very redundant for the general audience.
I understand your frustration with everything stemming from Oscorp. The reason I'm still giving it a chance is because of the S6 spinoff, as I'm assuming Oscorp and some of its background operations will be further emphasized. One thing I'm surprised no one talks about, however, is how they showed some of the politics behind mega-corporations. Especially in the scene where Harry accused Menken of operating on people, and Menken responds, "Progress has its stepping stones." That's literally a shot at some of the ways in which corporations have varying political interests. I pretty much agree with your assessment of all the villains, though. A lot of people accused Lizard of being poorly executed, but I was honestly stoked about what villains they would use after I saw him in TASM1. Still to this day I can't understand how they remotely even came close to thinking they could give Venom such little screen time, knowing how iconic of a villain he is in Spider-Man's world. And my other complaint, in terms of villains, is Electro. Not only was he so far from the comics, but they had a villain the audience potentially could feel so much sympathy for, but they edited him to death. He was dead before he was even defeated, really.
Also, I hate to disappoint you, but generally I am not aware too much of Daredevil's books or various arcs other than what I've seen from the original TASM. I don't know how far we are in terms of age, but I remember seeing him in the 90's cartoon (I might be wrong) and just being hooked. Then when I later saw him in the comics, I was even more interested in him as a character when I realized how his backstory has a lot of sentimental value. I'll definitely get back to you on this one, though, as I once even told Andrew Lucas that I have to catch up on a few characters when I get the chance (Batman, Daredevil, Captain America).
I can ramble on sometimes, but I appreciate the in-depth discussion![]()
as do I... thanks for an intelligent bit of conversatin'... and as for how far apart we are in age, I'm 59, and one of the original readers of Spidey from TASM #18, back in '64... so an old fart is what I am am among some of the youngsters around these here parts...
and I tend to ramble on myself, as well...
You are most welcome.
Forget "old fart." In the words of the wise Mr. Great Gatsby, I shall call you "old sport."
All jokes aside, I instantly have an immense amount of respect for you. Certainly keep me in the loop of your intelligent conversations around here![]()
well, 'old sport' is a helluva lot better than what I AM called sometimes, LOL... so I'll take it... I usually don't drop by as much to make a comment as of late, because of how disenchanted I am with the Spidey titles, but if I see a conversation goin' on while I'm lurkin' that attracts my attention, I'll drop by to put in my two cents worth... which is usually what it's worth, LOL... oh yeah, nice ta meet ya, 'Unc'...t:
Thought so! I figured it would be a nice step up for you.
I only joined recently but it's been a great time so far. My only obligation these days is a full-time semester of school, so I'm usually posting in between classes or when I get the chance after getting hope. I'm here, there, and everywhere I see a nice discussion, as long as I feel I can contribute to it. So far, your posts certainly seem like they're worth more; so I wouldn't exactly say that.
"Unc" ...I love it![]()
me too...How quickly I'm forgotten...![]()
me too...
Nevermind, I thought you meant Long-Time readers and Long time Hype users...see?... that's the price of gettin' old... your brain cells start to deteriorate...
sorry about that, Kaine, but I didn't think you were a part of the upper 50's-lower 60's age bracket... if you AREN'T, be glad you're NOT...![]()
sorry, dude, it's been a while... ok, you're an old fart, too... happy now?...![]()

Reminds me of high school when I read Gatsby and a friend of mine started calling me "old sport."![]()
hey, belated birthday wishes to ya... and it doesn't matter how old ya are or how long you've been reading the titles, you're still a part of the Spidey family, man...![]()
There are quite a few who are missing nowadays...And so was Captain Stacy, but I don't see him post much anymore.![]()
Yes, thank you!
However...
...I'm not quite in that bracket, I'm 10 years behind you in the upper 40's-lower 50's bracket. TMOB is around my age as well.
And so was Captain Stacy, but I don't see him post much anymore.![]()

Funnily enough, I'm currently writing an article based on what Spidey characters would NOT work in a movie setting for the Web-site i write for. during the research for that you wouldn't believe the names of some villains that get put forward. i mean there are people out there that want Hydro-Man, Carrion, Hammerhead. i swear some people want a Spider-Man movie to fail
