I still haven't seen Moneyball. Was Jonah Hill really that good. I'm a fan of his but his nomination is shocking. If he beats Nolte I'll probably smash my t.v.
He's good, but nothing memorable.

I thought Hill was great in Moneyball but not Oscar great

Someone wrote that Hill's performance is an "I'm just sitting here" type of performance. Which is hilariously accurate. :funny:

I'm surprised that Harry Potter got the snub; I thought Oscar would gives it recognition like they did for Return of the King.

Btw, I'm happy that my other favorite 2011 movie got a nomination:

[YT]-WWWTW1P8rQ[/YT]

Honestly, I would have given this the Best Picture nomination over Extremely Loud.

Extremely Loud, Incredibly Close
Top Critics: 51%

Drive
Top Critics: 84%

Tinker, Tailor Soldier, Spy
Top Critics: 91%

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II
Top Critics: 100%

Average Top Critics Score for the other 8 Best Picture Nominees: 89%

One of these things is not like the other...

I would have loved that too, but it was pretty clear it wasn't going to happen once awards season started and it was shut out just about everywhere else.

Still should have happened, though. That, and a nomination for Andy Serkis.

They promoted the crap out of Harry Potter to try and get one, but it was obvious that it just wasn't gaining any traction.

Still should have been nominated, though. Would have been nice to see Alan Rickman finally get some Oscar love as well.

How was the Artist not disqualified from the score nominations due to reusing music from Vertigo? Other films have been disqualified for less.

They caught the bait!

Never underestimate the power of Tom Hanks. :funny:

Kid: "If things were easy to find..."
Tom Hanks: "They wouldn't be worth finding."

Winner of fifty Academy Awards.

I liked Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close a lot more than The Artist

I'm surprised that Harry Potter got the snub; I thought Oscar would gives it recognition like they did for Return of the King.

But unlike the Harry Potter movies, Return of the King and its predecessors received BP nods, so you could say it was kind of viewed as an Oscar worthy material from the start.

i have not seen any of the Best Film nominations

anyway, i'm glad that Gary Oldman finally got an Oscar nod. itwas long overdue and hopefully he wins it.

It was just one track if I'm not mistaken, nevertheless the pre-existing music didn't dominate the score.

Oh jeeze does that quote make me want to throw up. I'm sorry but I just find 9/11 movies to be tacky most of the time.

Yep, that's the big difference.

Also shocked that:

Demián Bichir was nominated for A Better Life while Michael Fassbender was snubbed for Shame.

wow i am shocked tilda swinton got snubbed i thought she was fantastic

but why jonah hill should of nominated armie hammer over him imo if anything

Happy surprises:

Gary Oldman and Melissa McCarthy receiving Oscar nominations.

Happy to see: The Descendants, Midnight in Paris and Hugo nominated for best picture and Payne and Scorsese getting Director nods.

Worst Snub: Albert Brooks was criminally robbed for not getting nominated for Drive. He deserved to WIN the freaking award and wasn't even nominated.

I was also happy to see Rooney Mara get a nomination, but I'm still pissed Noomi Rapace wasn't nominated last year so I feel mixed up about that.

Do I have to point out again how good The Artist is?

I would see it, but we don't have it. Yet. We've been getting the Oscar bait movies really late, compared to late 2010. We only had My Week With Marilyn for three weeks, we just got The Iron Lady this past Friday and we're finally getting The Descendants this weekend.

If enough interest rises, perhaps we'll get The Artist week after next.

so happy Nick Nolte got nominated i hope he wins he was my fav performance of the year and this is now his 3rd nomination

How was the Artist not disqualified from the score nominations due to reusing music from Vertigo? Other films have been disqualified for less.

No they have not.

I'm very critical of The Artist's decision to use Vertigo's theme for the climax. But, 90+% of the film has a totally original score based on nothing else. It's completely eligible. And, more to the point, no film relied more on its score this year. Which is why it's an oxymoron to call it a "silent" movie.

Of all of the categories in which I've seen the films, (Excluded the shorts, foreign, and docs) I made the picks of what I think the Academy will go with in RED and MY PICKS are underlined. Sometimes they're are the SAME.
