I think we are living in really interesting times. I think we are in the beginnings of a massive shift in digital distribution.
Primarily in books and music. There has been a lot of debate lately about eBook sand publishers as well as digital music and the industry. We always see things like this when there is a dramatic change in the way business is done.
I know eBooks are the latest big change. I have a friend who is an author and she used to sell maybe 5 books a month, but as eBooks became more popular she has been selling around 30 a month. Big change. Many authors are now skipping the whole publisher thing and simply creating their work and selling it online.
The music industry has been going the same route. We are seeing tons more music artists lately leaving their labels and going independent. They produce and digitally distribute their music themselves.
Thanks to digital distribution being so easy I think in the next few years we are going to see an even larger drop off in authors and artists using labels and publishers and just releasing it themselves.
Its a brave new world one where the thieves of the old industry have a much smaller role.
