The movie is a remake of a lucrative Hong Kong trilogy called INFERNAL AFFAIRS, and the American version could follow a similar path according to the flick's hardheaded detective Mark Wahlberg. "We may do a sequel with a new cast, and a prequel and bring back the rest of the guys," says the former Funky Buncher. And should the director himself return (his first time revisiting his work... unless you count CASINO), he may find himself surrounded by plenty of colleagues and other A-listers: "They're talking to Robert De Niro and a couple of other people. Anybody who is anybody wants to work with Marty."

You know, they could've just remade Infernal Affairs II (prequel to Infernal Affairs/The Departed) and Infernal Affairs III (sequel to Infernal Affairs/The Departed).

Edit: Now that I've really carefully examined that article, I'd say they're going to do exactly that.

If they can get Scorsese back, I'm all for it.

Eh, I don't know about this. Even if the same amount of quality is brought back, not sure if I want a modern classic like Departed to be messed with. Depends on the story I guess.

Anyone care to sum up the plot for the other 2 flicks which I assume they'll be remaking if this goes through?

I didn't know there was a sequel/prequel to Internal Affairs. I'm gonna have to look those up, though I imagine it would be tough to live up to the first one.

I'm sure there was people who said that same thing when Godfather Part II or The Empire Strikes Back were announced.

True, sequels are always a gamble, but sometimes they're a very worthwhile gamble.

'Tis true, but in those examples you mentioned, pretty much the whole cast came back. The magic of the Departed were the character interactions. You'd be missing a huge puzzle piece without that.

Exactly. But. . .if Marty returns then maybe it will work.

Nah. The Departed is too good for a sequel. Both a prequel and a sequel wouldn't make much sense to me. What's left to tell? Billy's childhood perhaps? I think it has been explained well enough in the movie.

But if this is a remake, then the other two films (which contain the rest of the storyline) are already there. It's up to them to figure out what to do with the content of Infernal Affairs II and III. All three films did well.

Ehh, no thanks. This movie doesn't need sequels or prequels.

No. We already have enough sequels. I'm sick of sequels.

I wouldnt mind, if everyone was brought back and im talking all the way down to the 2nd unit shooting team.

Well things worked out well enough for the Infernal Affairs trilogy, same thing could easily work for The Departed.

People should just watch Infernal Affairs anyway, because it's that awesome.

Wahlberg was awesome in the departed so if his in it i'm there.

Argh I didnt like Infernal Affairs II and III. I say just leave it alone.

Jesus I never thought marty would become so desperate. The reason Infernal Affairs had a prequel and sequel was because the two cops were undercover for ten years. That leaves plenty of time for a prequel and it also leaves plenty of loose ends for a sequel. The departed cops werent even under for a year. What material to do they have for a prequel? A sequel wouldnt work either because they killed damon. A movie with wahlberg and badwin calling each other names and shooting people in the head would not work.

No, thank you. I love The Departed, it was easily last year's best film, and it instantly shot into the upper tier of my favorite movies, but a sequel is unneeded. I agree, the film is a modern classic and a sequel is too risky a gamble, even with Marty.

It could work- something interesting to see would be more interaction between Mark Wahlburg's character and Jack Nicholson's character. See how that whole thing came together. With Mark Wahlburg's character as the main character (starting with his first encounter to becoming a dirty cop)... the police academy could also bring Leaonardo DiCaprio into the prequel mix.

So, a prequel is actually DEFINITELY there.

I doubt it will work as well as it did with The Departed, which has already become a classic.

They have no material for a sequel. But they were undercover for over a year.

No way they could do it, AS MUCH as I would love to see everyone come back, always leave your audiences WANT more, not HAVING. We'll appreciate The Departed much more that way.

Monahan Writing "Departed" Sequel

"The Departed" scribe William Monahan is reportedly working on a treatment for a sequel to the Martin Scorsese hit.

The trades report that the scribe has even informally talked about the idea with Scorsese. Of course how it would work is anybody's guess considering the body count the last one left behind.

Whilst the original "Infernal Affairs", on which "Departed" borrowed heavily, had both a prequel and a sequel, the latter worked as notably Damon's character still continued on.

This version is expected to follow the foul-mouthed character played by Mark Wahlberg, and introduce a new character which its been suggested that Robert De Niro would play.

There's no indication that Scorsese would direct a sequel although would likely serve as a producer. Warner Bros. hasn't given any sign as to whether it would pursue another installment.

Warners does own the sequel rights to "Infernal Affairs" but Monahan's take could be an entirely original story, in which case it would not fall under that agreement.

A sequel and/or prequel?

Hell to the no.

It just wouldnt work since Damon's character is dead.
