I saw this discussion on an avengers board, and I thought it'd be a nice time killer on this one. What villains do you consider A-list? What makes a villain A-list?

A lot of people would say it's just how well known a character is, but to me, in the comic medium, there's a whole power element to it too. so I divided up into three categories, Major world threats, scheming localized threats, and henchman, and picked the best from each category based on success, number of appearances, and general recognition. Keep in mind only a-list heroes can have a-list villains.

This is what I get

A-list:

Avengers: Kang, Ultron
Captain America: Red Skull, Baron Zemo
Fantastic Four: Doctor Doom
Daredevil: Kingpin, Bullseye
Iron Man: Mandarin
Nick Fury: Baron Von Strucker
Spider-Man: GG, Doc Ock, Venom, Sandman
Thor: Loki, The Enchantress (when bad.)
Wolverine: Sabretooth
X-Men: Magneto, Apocalypse, Sinister, Juggernaut (when bad.)
General Foes: Mephisto, Thanos, Galactus

I was tempted to put a Hulk villain, but I don't think either The Leader or Abomination qualify as A-list. if I had to name an a-list Hulk enemy, it'd be Thunderbolt Ross, and since he's not a villain, I decided not to list him.

so what villains do you consider A-list?

A Nick Fury villian is DEFINETLY not a A list villian. Heck, I didnt know he had villians. anyway, I would give the Leader a A list before a Nick Fury villian. :o

Err, we talking A-list as in quality, popularity, or power?

Uhm...A-list villains: The Void, Loki, Ultron, Dr. Doom, Thanos, Annihilus, Red Skull...definitely A-listers. B-list: Green Goblin, Mephisto, Absorbing Man, Abomination, U-Foes, Sabretooth, some real power in the B-listers but no megalomaniacal delusions of conquering earth or the universe. C-listers? Huhm. The Lizard, Dr. Octopus, Bullseye, Kingpin; some dangerous, rotten, bad guys but a little lower on the power scale and more localized in their malevolent intent...just my humble opinions...

Anihilus was C list until the annihilation series. I still only consider him b-list.

I Annihullus was b list and even though he had a good ride during Annihilation, he's still b list. :o

A-list:

Ghost Rider - Blackout, Deathwatch, Scarecrow

So what do we do A-list by? Story? Power? Recognition? accomplishments? the pure heinosity of the villain?

To me at least an A-list villain is one that has an impact or the potential impact on the Earth as a whole. There would be very few of them. There have been villains that have had several appearances and have been unimpressive in all of them and there have been those that have appeared once or twice and made a big impression. A-list villains should be countable on your fingers and should have fought more than one discrete hero or group. Mandarin for example has fought both Iron Man and the Hulk. Another candidate is Dracula who has fought Thor, Spider Woman (I think), the X-Men and the Defenders. Ultimately I personally choose by their potential threat level. The Red Skull and the Kingpin are simply small fry, evil and ambitious but trivial.

So...

Doom, Magneto, Loki, Thanos, Kang, Galactus and Mandarin in terms of big names?

also Korvac and others if you want to take the big name qualification out.
