I have no idea how old my cat is. When we got him through a friend of a friend, we were told he was adopted by said previous owner when he was 13 two years before. (The shelter told him the cat was 13.)

Then I took him to a vet last year for a skin allergy, and I was told he was 8.

Maybe he's Benjamin Button-ing it up. But he can still easily turn around and clean his own butt (and he's a big cat), so I don't think he's quite THAT old yet....

I'm not sure how you can age cat. By its teeth maybe? I would trust the vet's opinion though.

Yeah, supposedly it's by teeth. My cat still has pretty good teeth - my old roommate had a cat who was 5 (supposedly) and its front teeth were almost worn down.

The shelter's vet presumably determined his age too, but second opinions, I guess?

He's big and fat and doesn't jump around like a kitten, but he's still quite flexible so I don't think he's 18 or anything.

Lost several cats over the past few years mostly due to age/health issues. The oldest being just over 18 years a few months ago, the youngest around 8-10 years though she disappeared so may still be alive. We still have one that's over 18 years, another of indeterminate age (12-15) and a third around 6 years old.

thanks for the condolences everyone. most of the time i like animals more than people so this is pretty hard for me. he was my brother's cat and when they had to move years ago, they couldn't keep him, so i took him in and we've been bff's ever since. that was a good 6 years ago and i'm not sure how old he was back then, but my mom thinks he was at least 12.

it just sucks because a teacher of mine passed away friday, and now my cat, the government shutdown, tiny paycheck cuz of shutdown and a million bills my way, it has just been a horrible october for me /rant
