A Modern League of Extraordinary Gentlemen

You actually can keep bourne if you wanted to keep with literary sources,

You know what would be interesting, is a League comprised of all the more recent horror movie villians. Freddy, Jason, Pinhead, Chucky, Leatherface, Leprechaun. All working together in a sort of truce to take down a bigger evil.

This subject has been done a million times.

That being said, it is still fun.

My league:

Dr. Samuel Loomis ("Psycho"/"Halloween"): Government liaison/leader. Chosen for his experience with the strange and paranormal. It would be established that the Loomis's from the two above mentioned films are the same man.

David Dunn ("Unbreakable"): Super-strength character.

Beatrix Kiddo/The Bride ("Kill Bill"): The assassin. Joins after making a deal to protect her daughter.

Ashley J. Williams ("Evil Dead"): Demon hunter and comic relief.

Charlie McGee ("Firestarter"): Team powerhouse.

Anton Gorodetsky ("Night Watch"): Sent by the Night Watch to monitor the team.

Jason Voorhees ("Friday the 13th"): Rampaging monster, only brought out in extreme situations.

This team is actually inspired by a line-up from one of the old threads. It didn't have Anton or Dr. Loomis, and included Severus Snape. I remember that thread having a pretty cool sketch somebody had done of their version of the team.

Potential villains:

Syler ("Heroes")
Early versions of Skynet ("Terminator") or Manticore ("Dark Angel")
Eddie, the Iron Maiden mascot
Mr. Glass ("Unbreakable")
Pinhead ("Hellraiser")

The United States Government had a problem. Some rather important documents and equipment have gone missing, and have apparently found their way into the hands of some less-then-trusted people in Beijing. The operation: Steal the documents back. The catch: Said documents and equipment are being guarded by the most complex security system in all of Asia. Oh, and the United States government cannot be involved. At all.

Only one man was crazy enough to be convinced by the government to even try to formulate the scheme needed:

Ocean%2C_Danny.jpg

That man was Danny Ocean.

He brought along with him some of the top thieves and crooks he could get a hold of, including his usual partner-in-crime, Rusty Ryan:

Thief Charlie Croker:

Professional "Driver" Frank Martin:

To these the United State Government has added several agents to Ocean's team:

FBI Agent Neville Flynn (because when you deal with Motherf'ing snakes on a Motherf'ing plane, going into a highly guarded Chinese military facility is easy)

IMF Agent Ethan Hunt, who will act as the field leader to Danny Ocean's behind the scenes planning:

Aging CIA agent Jack Ryan.....

and, on loan from Britain's MI6, one James Bond, 007:

Four Crooks, four lawmen.... Can Ocean's Eight do their mission?

Modern Day Literary Team: (some of these aren't well known)

Nancy Drew (grown up) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nancy_Drew

Lestat http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lestat

John Ross http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Ross_(fictional_character)

Odd Thomas http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Odd_Thomas_(novel)

The Wandering Jew http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wandering_Jew

Granted, the Wandering Jew hasn't exactly been featured in a lot of modern literature, but he has appeared in a good number of modern writings and is immortal. So between him and Lestat, you'd get two immortal characters with very different takes on life and morals. Nancy Drew grown up could be the team brains, doing her best to solve what mystery lies behind the tragic events the team must face. Odd Thomas and John Ross could definitely help her out in that arrear, using their supernatural abilities to supplement her natural skills.

Very unknown but I would add to my team Charlie Asher (from a book called "A Dirty Job") he was something of a soul remover

Hasn't it been hinted at that The Phantom Stranger is the Wandering Jew?

Hasn't it been hinted at that The Phantom Stranger is the Wandering Jew?

I think so. Nancy Drew and Lestat would be the best known members of the team. The Wandering Jew would be next best known having a Bible-myth status around him. Odd Thomas and John Ross have both appeared in multiple books, but to the general public, they're not well known at all.

I figure that wouldn't be too bad though. On the LXG, not many of the general public know who Nina or Quartermain are.

The Wandering Jew? That's an... odd choice. Throw in the guy from "The Da Vinci Code" if he's around, and you've got yourself a fun story.

A guy cursed to walk the earth until the end of the world by God himself... pretty neat concept.

i'd put in former sherrif lori"china o'brien having left her sherrif's job due to term limits[if it applies in utah,if not politics forced her out]

Keeping to the spirit of the League, I will only draw from characters who originate from books and who could conceivably be alive in 2008. I'm purposely excluding James Bond, because I consider him already a 1-man superteam.

Jack Ryan
Clarice Starling and Hannibal Lecter
Orlando
The Time Traveller
Offred (Handmaid's Tale)
Ponder Bobbit (Neanderthal Parallax)
Case (Neuromancer)

Hmm, y'know who'd be GREAT for this? Cinderella aka "Cindy" from Bill Willingham's Fables. It's a great twist on the character, pretty badass.

A random selection...

The Operative (Serenity) - Brought to our time through unknown circumstances, fighting to right all the wrongs he did in his time
Charlene McGee aka "Charlie" (Firestarter) - Pyrokinetic recruited by the League
A grown-up Richard Wang aka "Data" (The Goonies) - Weapons creator
Tyler Durden/Narrator (Fight Club) Sort of a Jekyll and Hyde thing
Soo Yung (Rush Hour) - Hong Kong's best female detective and martial artist, avenging the deaths of her mentors Lee and Carter
David Dunn (Unbreakable) After a painful divorce the League finds out about the events from Unbreakable and decides to recruit him; with nothing to lose, he excepts.

A mission for the movie league - track down two rogue government agents, Mr. and Mrs. Smith.

Keeping in Moore's tradition of showing us familiar characters aged a few years:

Charlie Bucket - Eccentric billionaire and financier of the group

Leroy "Encyclopedia" Brown - Following the deaths of Sherlock Holmes and Nero Wolfe, Brown is unquestionably the World's Greatest Detective

Charles Wallace Murry – Purported telepath and time-traveler; claims to be something more than human

Harriet Welsch – International espionage agent with credentials including the C.I.A., U.N.C.L.E and The Torchwood Institute

Wednesday Addams – Witch from a line stretching all the way back to Lilith herself. Encyclopedia doubts she has any real supernatural abilities; Harriet and Charles know better

Henry Evans – Vicious, vicious psychopath; the man who killed Hannibal Lector just to prove he was better than him. Kept in check solely by the efforts of Charles and Wednesday.

Their “M”

Madeline Fogg – Elderly former adventurer, an illegititmate child of Phileas Fogg, raised by an order of nuns in France dedicated to maintaining the balance between good and evil. Madeline runs the new League as agents to set the scales right.

Fighting against:

Cole Sear – Cole’s “mentor” Malcolm feels the living have squandered their gifts and that the world should truly belong to dead who’ve earned their right to exist. Using Cole as conduit he intends to rip asunder the veil between Life & Death and establish a global empire of the dead

The Doctor-- 11th Doctor to be specific, provides tech and transport ala Nemo
Echo-- from Dollhouse, the Mina of the crew
Desmond Hume-- Lost, his vision of an apocalyptic future promt M (the current female M from the Bond films) to assemble this team. As a man who has seen too much as is emotionally shattered at the start of the story he sorta lines up with Quartermain
Ash Williams-- Hail to the King Baby, our agressive engin of destruction, ala Hyde...
Sylar-- We need someone untrustworthy to fill the Invisible Man slot...

James Bond (more interesting for the team than Bourne or Hunt, I believe).
Harry Potter
Percy Jackson
Beatrix Kiddo
Sookie Stackhouse
Bella Cullen & Jacob Black (yes, both)
Sylar (now a good guy, not stealing more powers than the ones he already have)

Holy moses, what a team. More "Avengers" than The League. Hard to knock it down.

Technically, most superhero teams already are "Modern Leagues Of Extraordinary Gentlemen". The Avengers, The Watchmen, The Justice League, they're all essentially Leagues Of Extraordinary Gentlemen. In any case, I'll try and throw my two bits in.

Dr Henry "Indiana" Jones Jr.

Col. Steve Austin (The Six Million Dollar Man)

Col. John Matrix (Commando)

MacGuyver

Charlene "Charlie" McGee (Firestarter)

Michael Knight & KITT (Knight Rider)

Cole Sear (The Sixth Sense)

Edit:

Tina Shepherd (Friday The 13th Part VII: The New Blood)

That's about all I can come up with at the moment.

If you like the "Mega-crossover in an unlikely Scenario" trope and are familiar with the term "Mary Sue" You will LOVE the above link, which links to the second half (and most awesome half) of a group that fits the "Modern League" description. It's amazing.

Anyhoo, here's my take:

The group has to form in Response to Something, and that something sort of shifts the focus of the group. Earlier in the thread there was an example where the mission was to steal important documents and I think that having a clear goal in mind when building the team is a great way to go. I also really like the idea that Project Mayhem is an expanding terrorist anarchist group that has to be dealt with, because that wasn't really dealt with in the movie (I should read the book at some point). So here is my Anti-Mayhem LoXG:

Tyler Durden - Probably the last actual recruit to the team, but obviously the first that comes to mind. He has knowledge about the Project that is necessary to take them down

Echo - From Dollhouse, basically just good at everything, but also has a bit of Jekyll in this version. Her mind has been tampered with quite a bit, so although at the best of times she can call upon her false memories to give her experience and skills at almost anything she needs, sometimes one of her personalities will become dominant and cause problems.

Angus MacGuyver - Because I just love MacGuyver. Though he might not be a good fit with the other, more violent team members, an updated Angus that knows Physical AND Computer engineering would be just unstoppable.

Jason Bourne - I only saw the first one, in which his amnesia and excellent ability to murder people made him very Wolverine-y

Sherlock Holmes (BBC modern version) - Sherlock is probably here very reluctantly fulfilling his brothers end of a bargain with some US Officials. This will have to take place either before he meets Watson and the series proper begins, or after Season 2 begins when we find out that he's still alive.

Finally, Project Mayhem needs a face, someone for our heroes to defeat at the end who, for the lack of him, the Project can't function. Tyler Durden invented Mayhem and he can't hold this position, so who could it be? My suggestion: V from V for Vendetta fame. He survived the events of his film, somehow, and has discovered the ideal vehicle for causing people to rise against their oppressive governments in Project Mayhem. Given all that we know about the American Government, he can probably give a really convincing speech at the end about how America deserves what its getting and is a nation of hypocrites.
