Hello all! im here seeking some help......Ive been a fan of X-men ever since the 90's cartoon(late i know) and have only ever read 'Days Of Future Past'(i think thats what it was called?) and obviously ive read all of Astonishing X-men(Who hasnt??!!??) and basically ive decided i want more! I have Ultimate X-men up to issue 70 or so i think....but what i really would like to do is to start searching for back issues in the 616......discover all the key events!(much like i did with Spidey: Six arms spidey,Gwen death,Marriage,Clone Saga,The Other etc etc)and was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction?

Im told X-men didnt get good till about the 70's, is this info true?

Where do i start? No offence to Stan but i would like to skip all the "old-style" comic books and get straight to the "down to earth" or atleast emotionally "realistic" stories?

Any help with the key events, certain issues, creative teams, would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks guys!

There are two options available to you: The Uncanny X-Men omnibus, or the Essential X-Men series. The first is in color, the second in black and white. My big issue with the omnibus is that it ends at the climax of the Dark Phoenix story, but doesn't include the conclusion. Weird. I recommend collecting Essential X-Men. It starts with Giant Sized X-Men #1 (which, honestly, isn't necessary, but it's nice enough) and then picks up with Claremont's first issue, #94. It's $15 USD for 20 plus issues, and it's up to seven volumes already which takes you well into the '80s. Very good deal for good stories.
