ABC's "No Ordinary Family"

The first episode was mildly entertaining.

I think people looked way too much into that Kitty Pryde reference though.

Other than mentioning Kitty Pryde, what was the reference? Was there more than just the mentioning?

I expected to hate the show and was surprised to find out that it wasn't bad. Admittedly, I fast forwarded through all the predictable family drama that is the main problem with the show once they made it clear they were just going with cliches.

But the dad exploring his superpowers and the mom demonstrating her powers for people was pretty fun. Romany Malco seems like a fun supporting character. At least he has some personality, unlike the female cop and the comic reading lab tech.

I missed this last night. Will watch it later

It was a'ight. Way too rushed, though. We barely had time to get to know any of the characters. Especially the villain of the episode. It should have been a two parter, although I understand why it wasn't.

Over all not a bad pilot, it at least deserves a few more episodes to really prove itself.

The powers weren't very original which kind of bothered me but hopefully they will use them in interesting ways.

The biggest grief I had with the show was the daughters "buh hu, I've got powers which makes me a freak and I won't fit in". I got more then enough of that annoying BS from Claire in Heroes and quite frankly if they are going to play up that angle then I will stop watching this show.

I thought the pilot was really good, hopefully it can keep things up. Also, that they've learned from Heroes and keep things (or at least the cast) small. That was I think Heroes biggest problem too big of a cast, also helps that the heroes are all starting together instead of needed to find each other.

So far so good. Chikliss is good as usual. The girl reminds me of Buffy's sister Dawn's attitude. The boy is alright. And Darla, I mean Julie Benz. I can't get enough of her.

Did Benz leave Dexter for this show?

Something rather unfortunate happened to her charecter so she had to look for something new.

The pilot was okay. Not a huge fan of Julie Benz, but I'm a fan of Chiklis(I even liked his portrayal of Ben Grimm/The Thing). Both kids are annoying, lol.

I'm interested to seeing how many more people are out there with abilities. I predict a conspiracy....

And the villains seem to be Reverend Camden and Detective William LaMontagne Jr., haha...what a great combo.

Some people think it was a reference to Kitty Pryde's current state in the X-Men comics.

It really wasn't though.

I think with Claire and Violet from Incredibles and this chick, it has become part and parcel for teenage girls with superpowers to be more concerned with not being viewed as a freak than actually thinking the powers are cool. You see how the son is pissed beyond belief when everyone else manifests but him.

Unlike Claire I think she will get passed the "powers=freak" thing. But with those charecters it only leads to charecters like Elle who do enjoy their powers which I hope we get to see. And it seems so far that she can only read peoples minds by looking them directly in the eye which is a good way to deal with it.

I hope she does, the freak thing has been played to death recently and considering the typical americans desire for fame I somehow doubt that most people would actually have anything against having super powers. Somehow I can't shake the feeling that if a family like this got super powers in real life the first thing they'd do is try to get a reality tv show...

So true... lol

I saw the Kitty Pryde figure, but was there something more in the reference than her just running and getting the figure really fast?

Bump.

Just because she that Kitty Pryde was downstairs, people took it to assume that it was a reference to how Kitty is trapped in a tube in the basement of Utopia.

It's really really really stretching.

Depends on the family. I am a father and a husband, and I know if this impossible thing happened to me and my family, putting it out there would be the LAST thing I'd want. Not only will it give unwanted notoriety from strangers towards my family I wouldn't want, I'd be genuinely concerned about scientists (not necessarily the gov't) wanting to study us all to death.

Chiklis's character seems to be the sort that would feel the same way.

On another note and discussion, I read a discussion about superspeed and perception thereof while speeding on another board. People were speculating about Stephanie's perception of everything slowing down while she was going fast indicates some kind of time-warping ability.

This isn't necessarily true, and I'll explain.

As someone that loves fast cars, I've gone fairly fast in cars in my day. I've gone past 150 MPH before, and I can tell you, once I got back to freeway speeds of 70-80 MPH, the freeway speed felt like I was going 40 MPH. I'm sure there are others here that have experienced something similar.

For anyone that's ever heard of the BBC show "Top Gear," you'd probably know who James May is. He tested the Bugatti Veyron's top speed capabilities a couple of years ago, after Bugatti claimed it as the fastest road car in the world, capable of 253 MPH (it has since been topped by the Veyron SS, capable of 267 MPH--also tested by James). James did manage to get the Veyron to 253. What's relevant about the 253 MPH test is that James recounted how warped his sense of speed was. After he slowed down from 250+ MPH, he got to the point where he was going to walk out of the car. Fortunately, he looked down at the speedo and realized he was still going 70 MPH! Skip to 8:50 in the video below to get his exact words:

Even without super reflexes, which Stephanie would surely have, our brain is faster than we all realize, allowing for us to adjust perceptions as needed.

To be fair, the girl does have what is potentially the most inconvenient and traumatizing power. Being able to read everyone's mind and not knowing how to control it must be horrifying sometimes.

They knew what they were doing when they gave her that one. With a cooler power like super strength or speed she'd be able to control when it happens..as a teenage girl, it would have been boring for the character.

The son has the same visual special effects powers of John Nash... it's great... I hope they make him a fake schizo as well

My DVR didn't record it properly...so unfortunately, i'm gonna have to find it online.

But so far for those who've seen it...how was it? 1-10?
