Everyone remembers their first summer job.The low pay,the crappy assignments.
But there's always a light at the end of the tunnel, maybe by the end of the summer you can get that nice used car,new clothes, excetera. The light for
James Brennan (Jesse Eisenberg) is New York City for a college education. But there's also a lovely fringe benefit to his amusement park job and it comes in the form of Em (Kristen Stewart). A building friendship may lead to romance, thats if womanizing cads, and other distractions dont get in the way.
James becomes fast friends with Joel (Martin Starr),who smokes a pipe, and who's intellectual, but mainly depressed,Mike Connell (Ryan Reynolds), the amusement park ride ,maintenance guy glides through the park, expelling his knowledge of women to James. There's aslo Lisa P (Margarita Levieva),every mans fantasy in the park.
Just enough friends to make the time at work past faster, and party with.
But Em and Jesse connect beyond their group of friends, they're attracted to each other, but they both have skeletons in their closets and as Em states"She doesnt want to mess this up" with James.
He easily falls for Em,as they silenty drive around one night he stares at her just taking in how great she is.
Jesse Eisenberg is terrific,he's intellectual, confident but still a bit awkward.
Kristen Stewart continues to be appealing. Her character is vulnerable but tough. She wants to be loved but in the right way.
The late 1980's tunes add to the films appeal, especially when Crowded house's Don't dream It's over, plays in the park to Fourth Of July fireworks.
The film is being promoted as "from the director of Superbad".Dont go in thinking your going to get tons of toilet humor and sight gags.
Adventureland is mainly a romantic drama with light touches of comedy laced through and through.
Its one of the most charming coming of age films i have ever seen.
