First Screenshots Of Afro Samurai 2 Show Kuma In Action. March 12, 2015 . 9:00am

Being a cyborg, you can switch to different fighting styles on Kuma’s electronic chip.

Versus Evil has released the first screenshots of Redacted Studio’s upcoming action game sequel Afro Samurai 2: Revenge of Kuma.

Whereas Namco Bandai’s 2009 take on the manga had you playing as Afro, Revenge of Kuma has you playing as Kuma, and with that comes a number of changes.

For starters, you’re able to switch through different fighting styles on Kuma’s electronic chip – for those who don’t know, Kuma is Afro’s cyborg brother. Kuma’s default fighting style is very offensive and good for taking down enemies quickly, whereas if you load up Afro’s more defensive fighting style you’re better off letting enemies swing first and then striking back at them.

Another big change is that the attacks are all mapped to a single button. The 2009 game gave you three attack buttons to string together a number of different combos, but according to project lead David Robinson – who led the 2009 game and has reprised the role for the sequel – people struggled to get on with that three-button set-up. Hence, he’s switched attacks to a single button, and allows variation through the chip system.

Afro Samurai 2: Revenge of Kuma will be coming to PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One soon. More screenshots are below.

Afro Samurai 2: Revenge of Kuma Volume 1 will launch for PlayStation 4 on September 22, publisher Versus Evil announced.

The game is also planned for Xbox One and PC, however, as noted on the PlayStation Blog, it will launch first on PlayStation 4. The PlayStation 4 version will also receive a special discounted Trilogy bundle containing all three volumes of the game for 20 percent off the regular price (30 percent off for PlaySTation Plus members). Volume 2 and Volume 3 will launch at a later date. Each will have its own story arch, characters, combat styles to master, and original soundtrack.

A sequel to the 2009 PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 game, Afro Samurai 2 is a third-person actin game and picks up where the first game left off. The story follows the path of Kuma, a cybernetically enhanced killing machine with a bear’s head who was once Afro Samurai’s closest childhood friend called Jino. After Kuma is defeated by Afro, he regains consciousness, but must regain his strength, humanity, and sanity in order to go after Afro and avenge the deaths of those he loved, including his adopted little sister Otsuru, who was murdered at the Sword School massacre.

Afro Samurai 2 Pulled From PS4 And Steam As It “Was A Failure”. November 20, 2015 . 2:30pm

Afro Samurai 2 has been pulled from sale and refunds are being given to those who purchased it.

Versus Evil has pulled Afro Samurai 2 from sale on the PlayStation Store and Steam and refunds are being given to those who purchased it.

CG Magazine was able to speak to Steve Escalante, the general manager of Versus Evil, who revealed the reason for pulling the game:

“The game was a failure. We could not do, in good conscience, volume 2 and volume 3. So we’ve begun the process, it’s been a long process to figure it out because Sony has never really had to do this in this way, but we’re returning all the money. So across the board we’re putting out an apology saying ‘sorry about this.’”
Escalante added that Versus Evil looked at the game from a consumer perspective and saw that “people just didn’t like it,”(it’s worth noting that it only has one “positive” user review on Steam) and so to avoid having any more unsatisfied customers, the decision was made to pull the game and refund.

While obviously a niche title, this may be an unprecedented moment in modern gaming. A lot of people throw the words "broken" and "unplayable" and "garbage" around when a game is rough around the edges, but a total refund?

Hopefully a cue to developers to not rush things, to do proper testing, and to not take your product for granted.
