And also one of my favourite musicians.

Remember that compitition I had in the games forum back when it was one forum? Yeah, I kinda forgot all about that. I'm just gonna announce Akira Yamaoka as the winner.

This belongs in Community because his work spans across different conoles and because discussion about Akira is more about the music anyway.

I have declared Akira the winner for two reasons. Number one - the sheer body of work. Number two, more importantly - the sheer quality of the work. A third reason can be considered also - his work spans across different styles. His music can be moody, it can be enchanting, atmospheric, ravey/dancey, rock, etc etc. Let's see what I have in my playlist right now...

All by Akira...

Forest
White Noiz
Promise (Reprise)
Null Moon
Heaven's Night
No One Love You
Last Carol
You're Not Here
Float Up From A Dream
The End Of Small Sanctuary
Please love me... once more
Innocent Moon
Maternal Heart
Letter (From The Last Days)
Once With Night Wind
Memory Of The Waters
Never Forgive Me, Never Forget Me
Sickness Unto Foolish Death
Flower Crown Of Poppy
Sun
Hometown

These songs, and many more. The guy rocks. There's something quite feminine about some of his music too... *shrugs*

 I always liked Nobuo Uematsu the best. This guy is great also

The guy who wrote the Tetris theme is the greatest VG music composer.

Somehow, I don't think that theme was written for the video game.

Greatest videogame composers:

Yatsunori Mitsuda of Xenogears and Chrono Cross fame.

Bill Brown for many Tom Clancy games (mostly Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon) and Clive Barker's Undying

Martin O'Donnell - Halo. 'Nuff said.

James Hannigan's score for Republic : The Revolution is, simply put, a work of art.

So, no, kainedamo, Akira whatshisname is NOT the best videogame music composer ever.

Oh and is this really the right forum for this topic?

You all are complete idiots.

1. Koji Kondo is DEFINATELY the best video game composer in the world
2. He's the second best composer on the planet behind Elfman
3. Wrong freaking forum!
4. Snails are a suck and should never exist.

I reckon john williams, ok so maybe they werent originally for video games, but his scores are aweseom. especially the indiana jones score.

You're all wrong. Entirely wrong. It's Yuzo Koshiro, composer for Sonic the Hedgehog, Super Adventure Island, Streets of Rage 2, and countless others. The Streets of Rage soundtrack alone should put him on top.

Yamaoka is no doubt a brilliant composer....I'm a great fan of Michael Giacchino (Medal of Honor, Mercenaries), but in the end, the atmospheric, ever changing music of Akira is what makes him number one for me.

What games are these from? Is this the guy who did the intro for MGS2? Cause that was pretty awesome. Likewise the intro for Tekken 2 on the original PS.

The entire MGS2 score was done by Harry Gregson-Williams.

I love music more than almost anything on Earth and I like video games and I think of people who are knowledgeable about film scores and composers as "scholarly" and "smart", but I am kind of prejudiced against anyone who actually knows tha name of the guy who wrote the music for their video game. That seems to cross a dork-line for me.

Best video game music I've ever heard was the eerie soothing/still foreboding Eno-esque music in Resident evil 4 when you come upon a merchant/safe room.

the original silent hill is better, really, I don't mean to sound like "no, this is better than yours" but...well, it is.

Oh yeah, I only played that once when it came out but my memory tells me you're right. I remember being impressed with that.

All of the scores of the Metal Gear series are really good, except for a few of the boss sequences in my opinion. (w/ heavy play, a few of those high-paced renditions are a bit over the top)

Final Fantasy has had some good stuff too.

but Super Mario Bro.s is the Stairway To Heaven of video game music.
