More superhero movies head for AustraliaTuesday Jul 24 13:50 AEST

Australia will soon be swarming with superheroes.

One of Hollywood's top producers, Avi Arad, whose credits include the Spider-Man, X-Men and Fantastic Four franchises, said he would shoot several big budget films in coming years in Australia based on comic book superheroes.

Arad had a taste of filmmaking in Australia with this year's hit, Ghost Rider, starring Nicolas Cage, which was made in Melbourne.

The producer said he was impressed with Australia's talented film crews and special effects house.

"Some of the bigger projects I am working on now inevitably will end up in Australia," Arad told AAP in an interview in Los Angeles.

Arad has more than 10 films based on comics on his production slate, including Captain America, The Avengers, Thor, The Punisher 2, Ant-Man, Iron Fist and two spin-offs of the X-Men films, Wolverine (starring Hugh Jackman) and Magneto.

Arad would not name the films he planned to shoot in Australia, but he did reveal he was attempting to hire an Australian director for one of the movies.

He declined to say the director's name, but there has been speculation Australian director Alex Proyas was being wooed to direct the film adaptation of another Arad project, Silver Surfer.

The Silver Surfer was introduced to film fans this year in the latest Fantastic Four film.

Proyas directed the small budget Australian movie, Garage Days.

Proyas is best known in Hollywood for his 2004 sci-fi film I, Robot, starring Will Smith.

Ghost Rider cost $US110 million to shoot in Melbourne, but made $US230 million at the global box office and tens of millions more in DVD and video sales.

"I love working in Australia," Arad said.

"It's such a fun place with great technical talent and some amazing special effects houses."

Arad said a sequel to Ghost Rider was yet to be planned.

The 57-year-old recently left his post as chairman and chief executive of Marvel Studios to form his own production company, which includes Marvel properties Hulk, Spider-Man and next year's much-hyped Iron Man, starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Robert Downey Jr.

Arad's next project is the Bratz movie, based on the popular girls' dolls.

Bratz, a live-action film, was shot in Los Angeles and will open in Australian cinemas on September 20.

"Bratz is X-Men for girls," Arad said.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

I was whistling dixie until I saw "I, Robot." That film was disappointing in more ways than one. I'm now wondering if they honestly feel that he can bring out the epic nature of the Surfer or if he's being culled because he has a background with another character that was stoic and shiny.

Here's hoping when they officially announce someone that it's someone who really understands the material. I REALLY don't want another loose adaption from FOX. They've severely let me down on cosmic figures in the past.

Honestly (and don't laugh) David Twohy is #1 on my list and I didn't even like Riddick. I think he bit off more than he could chew with that film film. He's better with more personal films like this one.

I liked iRobot, just going to see how this news pans out. Interesting though.

And Bratz?? Say it aint so Avi nooooo

Alex Proyas has washed his hands of Fox and said he won't do another film for them because of Tom Rothman.

I don't see it happening.

Vile is right. There is some bad blood between Proyas and the studio. At least that's the last thing i heard. And i don't think he wants to make a superhero movie - well at least not at the moment - he turned down Superman a couple years ago if i'm not mistaken.

I'm not a big fan of I, Robot myself but The Crow and Dark City otherhand are great IMO.

Arad would not name the films he planned to shoot in Australia, but he did reveal he was attempting to hire an Australian director for one of the movies.

Oscar nominated director Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge, Romeo & Juliet) is a big fan of Silver Surfer, he's Australian and he's also directing 20th Century Fox's upcoming outback epic Australia (starring Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman). He's got a nice visual style which i'd be interested in seeing in a comic book movie plus as an added bonus he'll more than likely be able to attract A-list talent.

I've suggested him before and i still think he'd be a nice choice for the directors chair.:yay:

Marvel Studios supremo Avi Arad reveals; "I ran into Baz Luhrmann. We got chatting and I asked him if he had ever thought of making a comic book movie. Who would have thought that he is a Silver Surfer fanatic? It's the love of his life."

Whether or not the director of Moulin Rouge ever gets it together with the Silver Surfer remains to be seen.

Also, before Australia Fox distributed and co-produced Luhrmann's last two movies Romeo & Juliet and Moulin Rouge. So it's obvious that he's on good terms with them.

Is Baz the Tzen guy?

Ant-man the movie......woot...hahaha

Yep Bratz The Movie comes out in the US August 3rd.

Baz would be a good choice also, though I think Proyas would be better.

Darren Aronofsky would own all other choices, though

^ The Fountain was weird as hell. I'm just not sure the audiences would appreciate it just like they didn't flock to The Fountain. Baz is actually probably the best choice as he's into this kind of stuff.

I don't really have any interest in a Silver Surfer movie beyond its ties to an FF3.

FF is the heavy hitter in the marvel universe.

Tom Rothman can ignore that at his own peril.

Just do a good FF3. Give us news on that.

The Fountain was weird, but fantastic. It isn't that hard to understand if you pay attention.

The philosophies presented in the Fountain show me he is the right man for the job. He would do a fabulous job with. Also, The Fountain had great visuals.

Aronofsky probably wouldn't do it by virtue of the fact that Fox is kind of snubbing him with The Fountain on DVD, and Aronofsky has aired his discontent online in his job.

I mean he's a great director by far, and it might be interesting to see him take a crack at this material. But I don't see it happening.

But, remember at one point that Aronofsky was doing Batman: Year One. And I did not approve of a lot of his ideas for that one, ("That batmobile be SLAMMIN!")

That's Batman though. SS is more of a philosophical character, and he showed he could do it.

Doubt he will end up doing it though :csad:

I think it will be hard to do a 'space based' film, however I'd like to see it. Proyas will easily do a much better job than Tim Story did with introducing the character.

Dark City and the Crow are simply, brilliant genre films.

I Robot was good in a mainstream kinda way.

Proyas would be amazing for an SS film but as Vile said, I dont see it happenning because of the bad-blood between him and Rothman.

I still think Luhrman is man they're gunning for and not Proyas.

^As in Baz Luhrman? Please no, Proyas would only do it if they gave him total creative freedom, which, with this being Fox, is HIGHLY doubtful.

Well he could do a good job with this I hope. I mean Silver Surfer is one of the best characters ever in FF4.

^Agreed, and Proyas is a really good director, I,Robot and Dark City were very good, and The Crow is an amazing movie.

With Proyas as director, shooting off a JMS script using those amazing SS effects utilised in FF2 (best thing in the movie) - this movie has the potential to be epic.

Let's hope that Fox share that belief.

If this does happen, I hope Fox brings back Doug Jones and Spectral Motion.
