If Alex Ross' books become animated movies (Kingdom Come or Justice), isn't it most realistic that the producers won't go the Frank Miller Sin City way, and just animate the movies with generic animation (especially since an animated movie of Kingdom Come or Justice would most likely be Direct-to-DVD)? If they did animate in the Alex Ross style, would they have to use motion capture animation, and wouldn't it be pretty expensive?

"animate in the Alex Ross style"

do you mean do the artwork in the photo realistic manner he's known for?

you bet that'll be expensive, not to mention slow. part of the reason why Justice isnt a monthly is because Ross cant complete each issue fast enough, his technique is beautiful but tedious.

the story for KC or Justice is strong enough for a live action movie-- in fact it would be better appreciated if it was live action. i'm not saying that it cant be adapted the regular animated/ Bruce Timm way, but i feel that it could get watered down, also there are some subtler elements in both stories that adults (most of which doesnt really watch animation) would appreciate that kids wouldnt.

ill probably get crucified for this, but honestly, i dont like his work. i commend him for his attention to detail, his paintings etc. but i find his work very bland. its strictly due to his models. he doesnt pose them in imaginative enough positions and i feel that dulls the work out. i think his best peice was his teamup with joe quesada spiderman vs daredevil. joe penciled it and ross painted it. great combination of style and color. again, ross fans, im not hating, just making an observation.

It would be incredibly expensive but also almost nearly impossible.
1 second = 24 drawings for one character. Thats not including multiple characters in the same scene, which would most likely be drawn by another team of animators. Then there are background artist and painters.
To get the level of realism in Alex Ross' work in an animated movie you would have to make 24 photo realistic paintings for every 1 second.
For 2 hours thats 172800 photo realistic paintings in Alex Ross' style.
Plus the animation has to be fluid and good, not stiff and unrealistic.

I say it would probably be easier and cheaper to do a live action movie with TONS of special effects.
But an animated Alex Ross styled Kingdom Come movie would be awesome.

even if its in a different, simpler stylized, style.

its definitely possible to animate something that is inspired by his work...its not as impossible as some people make it out to be. though, it likely wouldnt have that painterly quality that ross' work has, or at least not to that degree. but it wouldnt be that hard to capture a very natural and realistic based style of animation...probably something along the lines of the earlier disney movies (snow white, cinderella, etc), with a bit of an extra touch. another possibility....rotoscoping? hmmmm. either way, i'd love to see a well made animation of kingdom come and/or justice.

Wow, good point. I would love to see Alex Ross style in animated form.

I say use mo-cap, digitize Ross' style, and call it a day.

I can see where you're coming from, actually. It's his use of light that always makes the poses more interesting for me.

Not going to happen. The closest thing you will get animated-wise to Kingdom Come is the Final Fantasy movies.

Ross's Work Is Awesome, Have The Book Mythology Contains Alot Of Great Stuff, Some Of My Favorite Art Of His Is With The Justice League.

Be Nice To Kingdom Come Animated, But With Ross Style Art It Be Prety Expensive.

 I can definitely see that, as far as the natural and realistic based style animation. That would be the right way to go. It would definitely give it an epic feel.
