Comic-Con: DC Universe Tackles Dark Knight Returns
An adaptation of Frank Miller's seminal graphic novel was just one of the titles announced at tonight's Batman: Year One screening.

During the panel following tonight's premiere screening of DC Universe's animated original feature Batman: Year One, there was some exciting news to share in the world of DC animation.

Just after the movie ended, executive producer Bruce Timm announced the lineup of upcoming animated titles. Next up will be the previously announced Justice League: Doom, followed by an adaptation of the one-shot Superman story Superman vs. The Elite. After that, the studio will return to the work of Frank Miller with its first ever two-part movie based on Batman: The Dark Knight Returns. "It's going to be very, very faithful to the comic," Timm reassured the audience.

No casting has been announced yet, but in answer to a question from the audience, voice director Andrea Romano said that they would consider using fan favorites Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill for the voices of Batman and the Joker.

There were more questions during the panel about future projects, including Alan Moore's The Killing Joke and Alex Ross' Kingdom Come. According to Timm, The Killing Joke has been discussed. It's not currently on the production schedule, but it hasn't been ruled out. The same couldn't be said for Kingdom Come, which Timm doesn't think will ever be produced as an animated feature. "It's just not made for 2D animation," he said. "It's not a good fit."

Look for the three announced titles to come out sometime in 2012.

So Superman vs the Elite, anyone know what the comic was like?

Also with the Dark Knight Returns been announced that will most likely include Superman aswell especially as its a two-parter.

Action Comics 775...yes! I love that story.

I recall 'Wizard' magazine doing a piece on their choices for the best stories for DC's main characters...listing "The Dark Knight Returns" for Batman and doing the same for Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, etc.

This was the story they chose for Superman...so I'm very interested in seeing how they adapt it.

As long as they keep 'em coming, I'm up for anything. Public Enemies, Apocalypse and All-Star were all fantastic Superman (and/or Batman) stories.

Action Comics #775 is, in my opinion, the single greatest Superman comic ever written. I hope they don't manage to screw it up and completely lose the true meaning of the story.

An exact release date has yet to be determined, but expect to see it before July's Comic-Con International.

So excited that Newbern is back, Daly will always be my Superman but Newbern is also a superb Superman and I'm really looking forward to this.

I really do appreciate them using various actors for different iterations of the characters.

Tim Daly and Kevin Conroy are great, but, their voices and personalities don't necessarily fit each incarnation and animation style/tone.

This is the reason I'm ready for a new Joker as well (though, not the Kevin Michael Richardson one from "The Batman". No disrepect to the actor, I like him in a lot of his roles, but just... no).

Yeah I'd agree with that its good to see others do these roles to fit different animation styles. One of my favourites was James Denton as Superman in All Star Superman.

On the subject of the Joker John Di Maggio was excellent as Mr J in Under the Red Hood.

ioved every single one of these movies as of right now the only one i havent seen is doom.... ill def be picking this up..especially now that i read that the original writer of the story is help making the movie....

i too felt the joker in under the red hood sounded really well done... it was like he tried to have bits of ledger but not copying him completely....

i think my least favorites are superman doomsday and batman gotham knights

also is there a dedicated thread for dc animated movies?

Watched the sneek peak, looks very very good in my opinion

One thing though Manchester Black's accent while quite northern seems to have a Scottish twang to it.

ive seen people complaining bout supermans chin in this pic above...thats not a problem for me at all... what i noticed (and love) is it seems as though this looks like they arent going the "anime" route for the art... i like that.
