Sad bit of news today as Alex Trebek announced that he was recently diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer, which is similar to what Patrick Swayze had before he died.

Oh wow. That’s awful. Best of luck to him. I send my prayers.

Damn. I never watched Jeopardy religiously, but I remember first seeing it when I was four or five years old.

Alex noooooo.

Jesus, man. These last few days have been ****ty regarding icons.

My mom passed away from this. She was diagnosed in July and passed in November. The survival rate is very low unfortunately, especially at this stage. So sad.

Pancreatic cancer and its stage 4...theres no point in even doing chemo or radiation treatments with a cancer like that. Bout all he can do is get his affairs in order, spend as much time as possible with family, and take opiates for the pain.

I'd never heard of him, but it's devastating news for anyone. I wish the best for him and those close to him.

You never seen Jeopardy over there? I always thought it was a pretty global show.

I still watch Jeopardy and this is a huge blow!

@terry78 I'm not aware of it having been shown in the UK. If it has been it's passed me by.

This just broke my heart today. So so sad to hear thos news. What a brilliant host of an amazing tv show

Heartbreaking news, Trebek is a true icon of television and has been a regular fixture of millions of peoples lives for decades through Jeopardy, hoping against all odds that he can beat this.

It's a true shame that they didn't catch it earlier.

I hope he pulls through but... Jeopardy won't be the same.

Very sad. I admire his strength and it's good at least that he has the resources to get the best medical care. I hope he beats it.

If I can share some personal info, I got diagnosed with a (fortunately, very treatable) type of cancer last year. Still, it was a nightmare going through surgery and I'm still recovering. And the scary thing is, you never know for sure whether they got it all or if it will come back. Pancreatic cancer is one of the scariest ones because they only typically find it once it's really late in the game. I was fortunate enough that the cancer I had was caught early on enough that my prognosis is good. Still, **** cancer and **** the awful health insurance system in the U.S. I had to start a fundraiser to help pay for my medical care, since my health insurance plan went to complete garbage after the 2017 tax bill passed; since it kicked 13 million people off their insurance, the insurance companies needed to compensate and they did so by screwing people who are still insured by jacking up rates and adding ludicrous deductibles and copays. That said, if I didn't have any insurance at all, I'd have to declare bankruptcy, because medical costs are insane.

Anyway, sorry, don't mean to make this all about me. I really hope Alex beats this. But I also hope that we finally get to universal coverage in this country.

Yeab, same here back in 2016. I never brought it up because I just wanted to get the **** out the way but I just did what I needed to do.

Good for you, bud. Glad you got treatment. Doing alright now?

Another cancer 'survivor' here, massive respect and high fives for those who face, battle and combat this condition, it's a MF and thoughts to each and everyone one of us who face it, big love x

This is why we need Medicare for all or universal health care. I lost both my parents to cancer so I know something of the medical nightmare. You shouldn't work all your life only to get bankrupted by cancer. :(

So sorry to hear that, squeek. My mom was diagnosed about 5 years ago but fortunately, they caught it in time and she's doing really well. But the costs have been insane and the continued care she needs for that and other health issues are awful. We need to get rid of the for-profit healthcare system.
