Let's Lie to a Kid with Cancer AND Down-Syndrome

It's whimsical crap. Kids love that. Fairies, trolls, unicorns, etc.

It's like camp ghost stories.

For some reason ghosts always seemed more plausible to me than an old fat man delivering toys to the entire world in one night.

I never knew anyone who thought there was an actual easter bunny though.

I didn't, but I do remember searching all over my backyard for leprechauns, gold and/or four-leaf clovers on St Patty's day when I was about 6 or 7.

Waitwaitwaitwaitwait....

Are you guys saying Santa isn't real? Santa is totally real. He delivers presents to my house every Christmas.

If he's not real, then who eats all those cookies??

Kids SHOULD be allowed to have an imagination. Killing the imagination in a kid would drain the world of creative individuals to bring their dreams to the screen. A kid needs those years of creativity to really harness that dream world so they can make it into something for others. So why Santa? Why all of these other childish fancies? Without them, you'd be killing imagination. And imagination is the reason why all of us making our dreams into actual visualized worlds are able to do so. I don't know where I'd be if mine was killed off early, and I'd reckon to say many many others would be stunted as well if that level of childhood was cut off.

As per lying? The truth is a lot worse and this kid will never know. Let these kids live their magic.

A-Man is making way too big a deal of this. It may not have been the Queen, but's freakin Helen Mirren! We should all be so lucky.

I don't see any issue with this either. Helen Mirren made a kind gesture toward this kid & his family, which she wasn't obligated to do, thus "fulfilling" a boy's dream of meeting the queen.

Yeah, I was about to just post that but then I thought this title was a bit funnier.

so you show moral outrage about someone doing something nice, though a bit deceptively, for a dying child with a mental handicap that has the chance of making them feel as if a dream they could never have come true actually happen...

Then you state you would have given the thread a title with more decency...but you decided not to because the current one is "funnier"...

yeesh...irony much?

I see you understood what I was doing perfectly.

Obviously
:woot:

I got all excited about the title, but now I'm upset.

Maybe it's time we all we stopped trying to outsmart the truth and let it have it's day!!

I'm playing idiot's advocate. :P

Fixed, because only a moron would take issue with what Mirren did, so whoever you are advocating for, tell them that they are a dumbass.

Yeah, I was about to just post that but then I thought this title was a bit funnier.

Because we all know that a story about a dying child is a joking matter.

Exactly. It seems like an absurdly extreme position to say lying is wrong always no matter what the circumstance. . .

I really don't see a problem with this. Helen Mirren should be applauded for doing this. She didn't have to, but she wanted to give the kid and his family a fun night during this extremely dark period. What's the alternative, that his parents tell the dying kid the Queen couldn't be buggered to meet him? Lying is not always a bad thing, especially if it makes people feel better and has no damaging future consequences. It's a shame the real Queen can't spare half an hour to visit a dying kid though. That's where the outrage should be directed.

I'm kind of curious as to what her excuse is. It isn't like the Queen has real duties. She is a figure head whose sole duty is to be a ceremonial symbol of hope and pride for her people. Isn't this the exact type of thing she should be doing? Hell, Elizabeth should've had this kid brought to Buckingham Palace and given the royal treatment until he passes. It is the least she can do. But I suppose she has more important things to deal with like taking photo-ops on a bus and riding horses so she can "feel human," (because actually BEING a decent human being and granting Oliver's dying wish would just be absurdly beneath the Queen, apparently).

Kid got an upgrade IMO.

As someone who's told a deathbed lie, I'll chime in. If it makes that person's last days better, what's the big deal? When my aunt was dieing from all sorts of respiratory problems, her blood oxygen levels were so low, it was causing dementia. While sitting with her, she asked me my my grandfather hadn't called her recently. I could have told her the truth, given that he'd been dead for over 20 years or, I could lie. I told her I wasn't sure and I'd ask him when I got home. Yeah, I lied. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.
I'm still really curious about what you think about my post, Asteroid-Man.

This thread got odd from the start...

There's no issue here. If you have the chance to make someone a bit happier in their final days you bloody well do it. **** the Queen, the worthless *****, if she couldn't be a decent human and make a bit of time for this kid the Helen Mirin is one hell of a step up. Good for her.

There's a lot of hate for the Queen in this thread. The colonies are becoming restless!

Personally I've been anti-Royalty for years and I live in the UK.

I don't care for the Royal family. Except Prince Harry, he's okay in my book.

TMZ's naked pics of him partying in Vegas really won you over, huh? :o

I just wanted to point out that you legitimately asked why the Queen didn't see to this matter after I made a joke to that regard.

That's what I'm making a joke at Matt; people complaining that the Queen should've done this herself. That's a joke. You see, because it's highly unlikely. Of course, you were probably making the same joke because "only a moron would" assume the Queen would actually come meet this kid.

EDIT: I know you weren't seriously expecting the Queen to do that. Just a friendly jab back at ya'. ;)
