Sci-Fi Alien: Romulus (2024)

We're getting Alien VS Predator again. :o

I've been thinking a lot about this movie and why I didn't like it (not that I hate it or anything). And I came to the conclusion that there just wasn't anything particularly new or fresh about it, and it didn't have that "deep space horror" feeling that I look forward to.
Prometheus and even Covenant dared to do different things, they took chances (Prometheus more succesfully than Covenant in my opinion). Romulus feels like a very expensive fan film. Well made, but just a greatest hits of all previous Alien movies. Which is fine, but not exactly what I was looking for.

Personally, having read a ton of Alien comics and books, I don't need anything new, a solid story with some good scares is enough for me.

So who did it better Offspring (Romulus) or Newborn (Resurrection)?

I thought it did a couple of new things. The facehugger chase-sequence, the facehugger-hallway stealth scene, zero gravity against xenos, the hybrid at the end. Sure you could say these aren't big wild swings but still some of these are ideas that haven't been explored despite having 8 movies prior featuring aliens. I don't envy them though because next movie people will expect them to come up with even more new stuff we haven't done before.

Even with that low of a bar, this movie still fails to deliver. Most of the scares are in the trailer.

zero gravity against xenos, the hybrid at the end
The zero G sequence was one of the most unintentionally funny moments I've seen all year (second to Nick Cage in Longlegs) and the hybrid at the end is recycled from Resurrection with an added visual callback to the prequels because they needed another callback to beat us over the head with.

So who did it better Offspring (Romulus) or Newborn (Resurrection)?
I liked both, I know people hated it, but the mixing of Xeno DNA with Humans isn't a new concept to Alien lore if you've read the Dark Horse comics.

The Offspring. Better design. Better shot. And I do like that it ties into Prometheus.

They’re both unsettling but the Newborn is just disturbing to watch. I still have trouble hearing it scream when sucked out of the little hole.

The fact that it had a giant vagina removed due to it being too much is kind of a funny fun fact about it lol

There's so many successful games and comics that shows that this idea can work and yet they've messed it up every time
I'm partial to the first one haha. But I'm hoping that they knock it out of the park with a new one. Hell, throw in some colonial marines too.

They can play fast and loose with a new AvP movie. Throw any kind of continuity out the window, it should only ever be its own standalone thing. Hell, they could even make it take place in an alternate reality where Ripley and the marines lost in Aliens and the Xenomorphs succeeded in taking over the colony on LV-426 which as a result brings in backup Colonial Marines and also attracts the attention of the Predators. That's all that's needed, plain and simple.

I was kinda bored watching the movie to be honest and the callbacks to the previous movies fell flat to me. Then the human-alien hybrid was just uhh why?

I liked the exploration/mystery vibe of Prometheus.

Well, AvP1 and AvP2 for PC really come to mind as far as games lol

The mystery element of Prometheus was cool. The problem was the execution.

This scene finally made its way online and GOD is it glorious:hmr:

I wish I could rewatch it in theaters because it had my auditorium SHAKING.

Just watched it and all I can say is damn, what a great Alien movie. I didn’t think we would ever see one again but Fede Alvarez was able to do what Ridley Scott wasn’t able to do with Promethesh** and Alien: Sleepaway Camp. I cared more about Rain and Andy in the first five minutes of this movie than I gave a crap about the band of idiots and A-holes in the entirety of those other two crapfests. This one starts out grimy and dirty and really feels like a universe that’s been lived in. And while there are plenty of jump scares, I’m glad that’s not all it was. We get just enough corporate greed and sinister meddling from the Weyland Corporation to keep things interesting. And once the carnage starts, it never lets up. The intensity builds and builds, with the last 30 minutes or so feeling absolutely relentless (in a good way). Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson crushed it in their roles, and the rest of the cast was great too. I’m looking forward to sequels. This is easily the best Alien movie since Aliens. My only real criticism was the Ian Holm deepfake. It looked good in some scenes and uncanny valley in others. I think that they could have just avoided that altogether and either used Fassbender (though I can’t blame them for not wanting to remind anyone of the last two movies) or a new actor. I understand why they did it but I think that was a misstep. He still made for a compelling antagonist but it just felt like they should have gone another way.

9/10

Finally watched this. While Alien: Resurrection is still the worst Alien movie this is the first I would never, ever watch again if I went through all the movies. At least Resurrection is bad in a quirky way, this is just asinine generic slop. Hated every second of it with the extremely notable exception of Andy the Android - a truly wonderful character.

This felt like a fusion of modern ultra corporate, fan approval obsessed Content and a particularly dumb teen slasher movie. Maybe the most aggravating things you could possibly have done with this property.

Nice bit of honesty from Fede. I haven't watched my 4K disc yet but will be soon.

Movies are just like video games now. Released in an unfinished state and the patched later
