Sci-Fi Alien: Romulus (2024)

One thing I really hated in Prometheus and Covenant was making the aliens not aliens and having them be engineered. I always like the idea of the aliens being a naturally evolved species that we don't know the details of how they evolved and what planet they're from.

I don't know how they'd manage this in a non-convuluted way but I hope in the new one they can fix and erase that abomination that was that modification to the Alien lore.

Ridley Scott is a producer.

Doubt it. Maybe not mentioned, but I doubt they’d retcon it.

Excited to wash the Prometheus and Covenant out of my mouth!

That makes sense. I'd be curious to hear yours and others' thoughts on this change to the Alien lore from Prometheus and Covenant: did it bother you or if it didn't I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on what you liked about it. I feel like I haven't heard other fans discuss this aspect.

Personally I thought what Prometheus set up was really interesting. I liked that movie. Covenant took all its good ideas and **** on them though. I can't believe how bad that movie turned out.

I can see how one could find Prometheus interesting. It's just for me what they did in making the Alien not an alien would be kinda like making a sequel to The Sixth Sense and it being retconned that Cole Sear didn't really have a sixth sense of being able to see dead people but instead was just crazy. Perhaps an interesting choice if established in the first movie but annoying when retconned in the sequel.

I'll never forgive Ridley for killing the Ripley film and giving us that POS Covenant in return. :cmad:

I guess why I don’t see it as such a betrayal, is that we’ve been through three sequels (1 good, 1 mediocre, 1 bad), two Alien vs Predator spin-offs, that by the time we got to Prometheus, I was up for something different.

[looks at Blomkamps history]

Are we really certain that he could have delivered something better than Scott?

Did you watch Covenant?

It was a massive dumpster fire. A waste of everyone's time. We're 100% certain it would have been better.

At the very least it would have been fun seeing Ripley again and Weaver would have had her swansong.

If you say so.

Covenant is the best Alien sequel. Imperfect but I love the incredibly mean spirited Twilight Zone tone it has plus all the great weird David stuff. Fede Alvarez is among my least favourite horror directors so I could not be less interested in this, hopefully the Noah Hawley show happens and makes up for it.

Cannot imagine a worse idea for an Alien movie than Blomkamp's. Alien 3 is a perfectly good swan song for Weaver (Resurrection doesn't count).

Scott did Weaver dirty. There was no reason why both films couldn't exist.

Covenant flopped hard and lost FOX a ton of cash. A legacy sequel with Ripley, Biehn, etc. would have had more commercial appeal than whatever schlock Ridley was trying to sell.

Also,

Aliens > Alien

:o

I like Aliens fine but I find everything it adds to the mythos enormously reductive and uninteresting. The whole tone and style is just antithetical to what I want out of an Alien movie. It is fun as a satirical Heinlein riff though and ultimately I am fine with these movies completely contradicting each other, I'm a big fan of the prequels but when I rewatch the original I'm not thinking of the Space Jockey as a big weird bald man.

Eh, a legacy sequel would obviously have had more commercial appeal but that just sounds boring to me. I don't think Alien is really a character based franchise to begin with, it has plenty of characters I love but I'd rather see a new cast each time. The best thing Alien 3 did was kill off the entire supporting cast of Aliens in the most comically mean spirited manner possible.

I think with what Prometheus set up the aliens could have still been aliens. Humans were created via the black goo mixing with the minerals of earth. Via an engineer. Prometheus set up that this could have been the case on another planet which created the Xenomorphs. The protomorph at the end of Prometheus certainly suggested that.

Covenant just then took a dump on all of that with David killing all the Engineers and then creating the Xenomorphs himself. So essentially humans created them, ugh.

Yeah Blomkamp is a one hit wonder. Everything he did after District was mediocre or garbage. I liked some of his ideas, but his Alien movie would've probably ended up being like a Terminator Genisys/ Dark Fate. (Or even worse)

Demonic was abysmal and Gran Turismo looks like crap, but I still think Elysium is great and Chappie had many good elements in it.

I admire the charming idiosyncrasy of Blomkamp's filmmaking even if I don't terribly like any of his post-District 9 films.

I like Chappie, but even then, I started to notice that it is very much coming from an afrikaner.

There are good things about Prometheus and Covenant (mainly the visuals) but for me my biggest gripe was just how much of it hinged on characters having to make stupid decisions for tension and deaths. Part of what makes the original Alien so great (and some of the first sequels) is that characters acted and reacted in a realistic way and a lot of the 'bad' decisions (like letting Kane on board with the facehugger) were made for a reason (Ash having an ulterior motive).

Covenant especially was really bad in that department, right from the start people just make the worst decisions and bad things happen as a result. It shouldn't be hard to write an Alien movie where characters come across the organism and bad things happen despite their best efforts to be smart.
