Sci-Fi Alien: Romulus (2024)

I get that but I also feel that because of Covenant and Prometheus were misfires, there's a lot of folks trying to discredit Scott's contributions to the original film downplaying his role as a director. I've seen the films Hill and O Bannon have directed. Alien would be a lesser film had anyone else touched it. Would Giger had even worked on it? The guy just got old and his standards for scripts he's willing to shoot have fallen off a cliff.

I acknowledge his contributions, but there were also strong contributions made by Cameron as well. Not to mention contributions by Shusett and O'Bannon. Also, the explanation he came up with for the Xenomorphs wasn't satisfying or well done.

The Company said it was 20 years after the Nostromo blew up. I did like the implication that while they did find the Nostromo wreckage and the Xenomorph, they really didn't care to try and find Ripley. Some good emphasis on how **** Weyland Yutanni really is, and it makes wonder what it was really like on LV-426.

The cocoon was the chestburster maturing into a full alien. Sort of the process that we didn't see before. Which, honestly, is better than Covenant's implication that they just grow. Frankly, I think someone just wanted to shove a big giant phallus into a vagina.

Why was Big Chap in the same place as the Nostromo wreckage?

Ridley Scott deserves all the credit in the world for Alien. It's a masterpiece. I would never take thay away from him. But his RECENT contributions have been actively terrible, and also drag down this film in many of the same ways they dragged Prometheus and Covenant down. So in regards to THIS PROJECT and not his overall legacy with the original, he absolutely deserves criticism.

And that's fair but that still doesn't change the original film. Prequels are rough because they're typically answering questions that nobody asked. There's only one prequel I think is legitimately good and it came out earlier this year. Trying to bring Alien back to its Lovecraftian roots by essentially making At the Mountains of Madness in space isn't the worst idea but they clearly took the wrong elements from it and made the characters ****ing idiots.

I haven’t seen romulus yet. I'll be going tomorrow hopefully

I think Prometheus had a lot of good ideas. They just executed them abysmally. Ridley isn't a writer. He came up in the industry as an art director. Prometheus is an excellent movie visually. Ridley however needs a good script. He isn't a guy that makes magic happen spur of the moment. Ford and Hopkins have both mentioned how he doesn't really give much feedback to his actors and such. Cause all his effort goes into what's in front of the camera. Not the nuts and bolts of the story. Prometheus lacked good writing. With a more competent script, I think it would have been amazing.

Probably got blasted back toward the wreckage from the escape pod. I'm not entirely sure on the physics, so best not to dwell on it

That'd be interesting

I enjoyed it, they did a good job with the atmosphere and making you care about what happens. There's an amazingly tight film there when they're not trying to weave in the overall narrative.

For me I'd have it below Alien 3, which I'm in the camp of adoring, but Romulus is very much an impressive and respectable entry.

I really enjoyed it overall. Would maybe put it 4th below the first 3 films. I kinda enjoyed the last act and how weird it was and also how it tied into the other films. Hearing some people loved the first 2 acts but hated the ending just tells me some people want fan service but nothing new to separate it from previous franchises. At this point I feel like creating a final action set piece for an Alien film must be quite the challenge because there's only so many times you can do the "female survivor against a xenomorph" ending.

100% not the case. This is a reductive argument when someone is just salty people didn't like something they did but lacks merit. I am all for new and different, but execution matters. Just doing something "new" doesn't make it good or work.

I don't know, I feel like it happens all the time with different movies. The stuff people love is the fan service stuff and the stuff people don't like (or even hate) is the stuff that does something different. That's not to say I loved every choice they made, there were definitely a few parts that didn't quite work. However the final act was the one part of the film where I don't think anyone had any idea what was gonna happen and it's pretty cool a new Alien movie can pull that off after this many movies.

But to be honest even in the earlier scene when they get to the lab and we get some exposition about what's been happening I definitely knew that this would irk some people because they would be happier if the movie did not go down that route at all. :funny:

I was dearly hoping we were going to be seeing bunny/rat-alien in the third act. That exoskeleton with the matted white hair in the lab looked gnarly as hell. The human-xeno hybrid, while better done in this movie than it was in Resurrection, is old hat. Bunny-Xeno would have been even more off the charts weird. And I would have been all for it.

I thought the final act actually was fan servicey in the extreme, there's a bit of Alien, Aliens, Prometheus and even Alien Resurrection all mixed in there.

Aliens for the build up (Rainn taking one last big stand)

The thing getting sucked out is basically Aliens, Alien and Alien Ressurection.

Prometheus for the birth concept.

Prometheus/Resurrection for the things design and behaviour.

My biggest complaint in modern cinema is over reliance on fan service. I am actively irked when movies are hollow shells of fan service. So you're arguing this with the wrong guy lol

I feel like if you ask any Alien fan to pitch their idea for a film, most can probably come up with a promising premise that sounds intriguing but most would probably fail to come up with something new and fresh for the ending. Is the Alien King (another controversial idea) the only hail mary they got left to play at this point?

Apart from just being a quicker fix, the DLC might actually be less stressful because these hellish nightmares aren't in it:

Seriously, the Xenomorph might not actually be the scariest part of the game and that's really saying something.

Tut tut.

I think going full on Kenner Toy on designs is up there.
