Sci-Fi Alien: Romulus (2024)

I had a crazy thought earlier. What if the guy directing the next Alien movie is..... Dan Trachtenberg?

I enjoy the first AvP enough and the concept is fun in a "schlocky b-movie" kind of way but I also feel it devalues both franchises if they did that again. I'd rather see them keep doing what they have been doing recently.

I rewatched Prometheus and Covenant this week for the first time since Covenant was released, and these are flawed films. But they're interesting to me. Ridley is taking swings, and there are hints of better movies in here. I am assuming Trachtenberg is working on an AvP movie on his end, but I gotta say even if it's not the best path forward, part of me wants to see this David story wrap up. If nothing else, I like closure and Covenant had the setup for an interesting sequel next go. Maybe they can work it into whatever Romulus ends up doing next. I don't know. But I would be morbidly curious to see that chain wrapped up

I really, REALLY enjoyed Prometheus, watched it again last year before Romulus and still enjoyed it.

I thought Covenant was bad though and still do. Romulus made it a better movie by confirming David didn't create the Xenomorphs, but overall Covenant is still poor for me.

...you have Covenant and Prometheus above ALIENS?
I also do but I would never argue they're technically better movies. I'm just not interested in anything Aliens is trying to do, even if it does it very well. All I really like in that movie are Hicks and Bishop. Fine as its own thing, has zero connection to anything I like about the first movie - which I understand is in many ways what's good about it: it's so thoroughly its own thing.

Not that I count anything but the first movie as canon, tbh. I'm a defender of the prequels but its not like I watch Alien and think about how the Space Jockey is a big grey guy.

I also did a rewatch for ALIEN | EARTH, mostly surprised that ALIEN | COVENANT inched over PROMETHEUS this
Let's see...

Alien

(Gigantic gap)

Covenant
Prometheus
Alien 3
Aliens
Alien: Romulus
Alien Resurrection

I might hate Romulus more than Resurrection and both are unwatchable, irritating slop to me but Romulus I guess has more of a baseline, vacuous B-Movie blandness to it that's marginally less incompetent than Resurrection.

Alien
Prometheus
Alien 3 (Assembly Cut)
Covenant
Aliens
Romulus
Resurrections

I really dislike what Cameron did with the xenomorph. By turning it into a mindless horde he removed any mystique or menace it had in the first movie. In Aliens, they're essentially just giant bugs.

Overall, the movie has little depth or nuance to it, and is basically a template for the archetypal formula that Cameron would use for Avatar. It's a B movie elevated by its performances and technical achievements, but nothing more.

At least Scott was trying to explore some interesting philosophical ideas in his sequels, even if he didn't always succeed. Resurrections is an abomination, though and Romulus is the exact kind of sleek, craven, corporate slop I'm worried is all that the future holds for franchise filmmaking.

Alien & Aliens - Both are equal to me

Prometheus
Alien Covenant
Alien Romulus
AvP: Alien vs Predator
Alien 3 (Assembly Cut preferred)
Alien Resurrection

Aliens vs Predator: Requiem
