the pirate story is gone,
straight from the horse mouth

Quint: That’s right. My two biggest concerns were addressed in the Q&A… about the period and the pirate story. The pirate story in particular… I can see that being the most obvious…h2>

Zack Snyder: Cut…

Quint: Yeah, but it means so much to the story.

Zack Snyder: Absolutely and I feel the same way. It’s funny, because you know one of the biggest proponents of the pirate story is Debbie, my wife. She fights for it, because basically I’m in production and because we’re trying to figure out who’s going to pay for the pirate story… is it going to be marketing… is it going to be home video… I think the studio’s approach right now is like “look, we’re spending too much for this movie anyway, because we don’t even know who’s going to go see it…” and so…

and there you have it

I'm cool with it as long as it's on the DVD, I guess.

Hey Norm, what did you think of the Dark Knight teaser? I can't decide if I like it or not.

I read that as Snyder just finishing Quint's sentence for him is all; that logically, The Freighter would be the first story arc to get the chop when trimming the fat to make a viable screen running time. I didn't take it as proof conclusive that Marooned is toast.

Although, I can't really see the (counter)point in doing TOTBF at all if the script still calls for Veidt to die... it loses pretty much all of its subtextual purpose if that's the case. The Mariner has to live with his guilt and in the knowledge that he has himself become a horror among horrors... and so should Ozy.

Death By Owlship is just too good for him.

He never said its going to be cut. He was just saying that it seems like it would be the first thing to go. Hopefully, I would like for them to film it and put it in the dvd as an extra.

We don't really need it and it'd be really hard to do. I'm fine with it being cut.

When I first saw it leaked - I hated it. No Footage? WTF!?

Then when I saw it in HD after spending an afternoon doing an awesome Joker-online game with no less than 50 other Hypesters online and 4 on the ground in San Diego. I loved it. The upgrade in sound quality really made it great.

After watching the Simpsons movie and saw how ruined it was by the amount of quality film going into the teasers and trailers - I appreciated the subdued quality of it much more.

Exactly.

At any rate, the pirate story is great for the graphic novel, but would be deservedly trimmed in a film version. On an extended DVD would it be a kind of cool extra? Sure, but it would still feel mighty extraneous.

Nah, they needed to get rid of it. That was the first thing I would've cut.

It should be cut for Theatre runs

I'm glad he is filming it for the DVD release though. <So he claims>

I don't think the paraell will come across well on film....One of the reasons why they can never do the book justice with a movie version...

Never really cared for the pirate story, I'm also glad it cut.

I liked it in the comic especially when it actually became an extreme parallel. But I can see that it probably wouldn't work maybe if they did the whole pirate movie in the beginning and shortened it.

I would love to see the pirate story on the DVD. And the prospect of it being filmed in the same way as 300 and with Gerard Butler sounds awesome. It has the potential to be one of the best DVD extras ever.

I wouldn't use the word GLAD, but it's a fair cut

Thanks to ZS, as I hate when directors overuse the unnecessary stuff making movie boring and it's running time too long (examples: Hulk, KK, Lord of the Rings: ROTK and etc)

I look froward to seeing this on the DVD. It would not work (or work properly) in the theatrical film.

I reckon we may even find that Snyder gets his cash to make it after the initial release: if the film makes oodles of cash, let him have a couple of weeks to film 20 mins worth of TBOF.

I didn't think it would work in a movie. The whole point was that it was kind of a metaliterary thing: reading a comic about a world where superheroes exist so their comics are about pirates and now you have a comic within a comic that is hitting themes and panel pacing with the comic that this metacomic is part of... see how that kind of doesn't work as well when its a comic in a movie?

I'd like to see it on the DVD as an animation or something. I think it'd be weird to have this film suddenyl jumping into another little film. But a cartoon type thing would be cool. Kinda like the anime bit in Kill Bill, just something to break the film up, make it a bit different. But I'm glad it's not in the movie. There's going to have to be so much cut out as it is, at least I'm completely on board so far with the cut stuff!
