Comics Amazing Spider-Man 601 Preview [SPOILERS]

I thought you didn't read any posts before........and that you were just making a general statement?

Are you done contradicting yourself today?

Anyhoo, I sent you a PM. Hope we can be friends.

I didn't read any before I posted. I read some after I posted.

And dude I have zero problem with you and I honestly can't see why you think I do.

Eh art sucks.

Peter getting laid by someone who is not MJ? Wasn't that the whole point of BND? So the writers can show him pimping out?

I find it funny so many people are now offended by that. I mean it is all a bit redundant (Peter eh...played the field before), but this I gather has been building in the book. It's nice from the preview he is pulling a David Schwimmer from Friends though. *Look at Peter. Silly Spidey, you shouldn't have said Rachel...er MJ.

I've had to cut my monthly pull-list by more than half, with Amazing Spider-Man being one of the remaining three. That said, good issue. Loved Alberti's art in Spider-Man/X-Men and he doesn't disappoint here. Story was good, except the devolution of J.J.J. Oops, Pete had a one night stand...is that the world ending?...I couldve sworn I saw the sky cracking and the oceans boiling when the preview came out. Jeez. Anyways, besides his JJJ, I'm lovin' Mark Waid on the title, and if they were to mess with the current formula and have a steady creative team, Waid would be in my top 3 to take over.

As someone who has an alcoholic father and detest him for that, I see nothing wrong with Peter getting hammered at the wedding. I'm not a big drinker person myself, but at a special occasion such as this wedding, I see myself certainly going to be making a couple of trips to the bar. So whats the big deal?

Well said. Peter has been show to drink before (even in the very chaste movies with him ordering champagne) and I do recall an issue after he got back together with MJ in JMS' run (when it was still good) where they got drunk at a restaurant together.

It doesn't mean he is an alcoholic. Him sleeping with a woman while drunk? eh. He did have a one week fling with Black Cat after breaking up with her in ASM (complete with MJ walking in on them the morning after and BC with no pants on making breakfast) and yet about three issues later (I kid you not) Peteri s proposing marriage to MJ. Again.

Sometimes the writing is off. But most 20-somethings or those who had those years can relate.

Your wrong about that issue.

While Peter is drinking. It's never directly implied into the story. Same thing in the recent annual. (which I don't have a problem with)
Peter was making fun of the waiter to make his wife laugh. Mj whispers in his ear (probably something sexual) and Peter says no he wants the time to be right.

No one is calling him an alcoholic. Clearly you are probably a drinker and you might be getting slightly offended. Or you might think some of the readers here are light weights and think they are above drinking.

The whole point about this title is that it's rated A. (9-up)
They've even made a joke about it being the "all ages" comic early on.

My nephew used to be able to read this stuff.
I don't want my nephew saying things like

"HEY UNC I WANT TO GET HAMMERED AND LAID LIKE SPIDER-MAN!!!"
Because let's face it. Spider-man had no repercussions in that story.

The message in this story was, "its ok....nothing happened because of it."

He was drunk before in web of 38 (BY ACCIDENT) and he faced nearly fatal repercussions in that storyline.

I think we all can agree that there ARE laws for a reason that prevent the consummation of alcohol under 21. BECAUSE IT HAS NEGATIVE EFFECTS!!!

Unless something is really wrong with half of you guys, you should at least be able to respect why I'm offended that they have one of the top Role model heroes doing something like this.

I don't see how half of you guys think that our disgust of drunken Spider-man getting laid is "funny". That's very rude and disrespectful. :csad:

I never laughed when any of you complained about stories during JMS' era.
I like the clone saga and some of you have quit, and I respect that. I don't laugh like its funny or act like I don't understand why you guys were driven away from the title. :whatever:

Yeah, I would really love Mark Waid to be a regular writer as well. Mark Waid, Dan Slott, and Joe Kelly as the three regular writers for the book. That would be top shelf stuff!

I'm not reallly offended by what you said or the issue. I personally think it is a poorly written "Friends moment," but I don't think it ruins the character. After all the crux of Spidey's creation was a mistake with Uncle Ben and the point is he keeps making mistakes, like when he threw away the costume, etc.

And he has been sexually promiscuous before. I mean he pretty much had a week of casual sex with BC white sort-of dating MJ (and then proposing to her three months later). And I do recall it is insinuated that he had a one-night stand with Betty Brant while she was married during Wolfman's run.

I suppose it is less obvious than seeing him wake up naked in bed, but in a book where people regularly are murdered and women are drawn as shallow sex kittens half the time, eh?

BTW I do drink, though I wouldn't call myself a "drinker," per se. So, no worries.

And it was implied that he was about to have sex with Gwen in one issue

And let's not forget about the issue itself.... [blackout]... God Damn!!! MJ knows!!!![/blackout]

:yay:

And anybody just dismiss it to alcohol, or was Peter's memory loss maybe all about being close to Mary Jane... because it kind of comes off that way...

Just guessin'

:yay:

I'm not so sure sex was implied in those issues. The only time it was implied for sure was when he was married to MJ (which didn't happen) and MJ was pregnant (which didn't happen).

That is an interesting theory MOTB. But since that would be a subtle hint, I'm going to say that might be giving Marvel too much credit.

Hey guys? :cwink:

I've heard some of you complain about JMS having Spider-man claim that EZEKIEL is the first person with Spider-like powers he's fought alongside.

But this is "OK!" yeah...........sure.

Spider-Man is in costume there and knowing full well he may have to swing into action. He was at his Aunt's wedding, in civilian attire. And "I don't drink..." probably means he does not drink. Which, in the story in # 601, shows you how nervous and worked up he was about talking to Mary Jane if he was drinking champagne. I believe that's really the point of it. But I guess either way it doesn't matter. Peter Parker is now labeled a man-****e alcoholic now by the lovely fans. :oldrazz::cwink:

Aw crap! Mark Waid just got owned!!!!!!!!! What a hack!

No he didn't. I will repeat what I said to you in the Amazing Spider-Man thread in the Marvel forums.

I had a similar experience in real life with my best friend. Never drinks. Never smokes. It was a mutual friends wedding and he was in the wedding party. He was paired up with one of the brides maids and they had to dance. He can't dance. He liked the girl and wanted to impress her. He was so nervous that he took a shot of whiskey when it was time to dance. He wasn't "wasted" but for him to take a shot of whiskey I was like "Oh Snap, he's freakin' nervous!".

It was a little out of character for my friend. It was a little out of character for Peter Parker. Though the circumstances surrounding it can make people do things that they don't normally do. Happens in real life all the time. It should show fans, and readers, how nervous Peter had become in just talking to Mary Jane. Though...doesn't matter people seem to already have their minds made up. Just figured I would share that story with everyone. :o:oldrazz:

And as I responded to you in the other thread, I get that. It's fine. But did your friend get so hammered that he ended up sleeping with some girl and he didn't even remember?

I'm the same way. I don't drink, don't smoke, don't do drugs. Once I was at my first wrap party and I was a little nervous. I had one drink and hadn't really eaten that day. It made me a little unsteady, I didn't like that, so that was it.

I get Pete drinking to calm down because of MJ (though we still don't know the "reason" for the split aside from the devil deal). It is the irresponsible drinking to the point of sleeping with someone he has no real feelings for
and not even remembering. Not to mention it would probably not be safe sex either.

Don't bother using real-life logic with DACMAN... ever since we were polite and he asked for some suggestions for ASM and I told him to read ASM #600, he's since flipped, started anti-ASM threads (that got closed) and will nitpick ANYTHING just to point out how crappy Spider-Man is nowadays...

It's quite sad really... :csad:

SIAT: Spider-Man is in costume there and knowing full well he may have to swing into action.

Well...out of all the tragic whacked out things Spidey/Pete had lived thru...it's hard to believe that seeing MJ drove him to get drunk (plastered to the point he is unable to figure out what he did) and sleep with someone he doesn't know.

So again....let's blame MJ...!!! :whatever:

The thing is....if he was THAT plastered, to the point of not remembering what he did....THAT is WHY he said he DOESN"T DRINK. He is too powerful to be out of control.

Respectfully, there is no logic saying..."well, he was in costume there"...as an explanation either. He knows he is jumping into action all the time, more often when he ISN"T currently in costume.

So...the question is now...DID PETE DO ANYTHING ELSE WHILE DRUNK??

MAYBE HE TOLD HER HE IS SPIDER-MAN WHILE SLEEPING WITH HER LIKE A DRUNK RABBIT? DID HE DO PROPERTY DAMAGE ON THE WAY HOME? HURT ANYONE? ....WHO KNOWS?...NOT EVEN PETE DOES!!!!

Point is, this was out of character, as many clips could show.

And MJ isn't going to drive him to drunkeness and one night stands! :whatever:

Of all the traumatic things, stressfful, hurtful, hard things he's gone thru...that is a tough buy!

Why didn't he get plastered during Civil War? Unmasking to the World? The pressure? When people have DIED..? I could list a book worth of stuff more apt to get Pete drunk.

Why didn't he get drunk during One More Day...being backed into the corner...having to deal witht he devil...?....i mean...does it get worse than that? HAving to give up your wife and future and baby and have to make a deal with the devil...i could see where THAT would make Pete drink! Good grief.

This instance was for the HYPE. Is it that hard to see? Again, wasn't a well written plot or something in character.

Yeah, I know but I had to try, you know. It seems it is not going to work on a lot of people. They are going to see only what they want to see. I actually liked your theory earlier in the thread, or maybe it was the Amazing Spider-Man one, where it was the sort of "curse" that is now surrounding their relationship since One More Day. It could be what drove Peter to drink as well. Seeing Mary Jane and having him do things that he would not normally do to keep him further away from her. He set up the date with her later that day and MJ just happened to sleep in and Peter was actually on time for once. It is an interesting theory and we will see how it works out.

People try to stand on this high moral ground now that anyone that partakes in drinking at a party and ends up in a one night stand (a reasonable one at that, since both where trashed and live together), they they are bad. Get off it.

Where do you even get this idea from? Are you reading the actual posts or just a few select words?

No one is saying drinking is wrong. Just that it is:
A) Out of character for and bad for PETER PARKER to get drunk AND "SLEEP" WITH SOMEONE. The two things go hand in hand. If it was just gettting drunk, no one would really care.

B) The story sucks. "I totally got drunk and slept with someone maybe...I don't know" are horrible storylines. Maybe actually have real romantic progression and sexual tension building up to something, instead of opening a comic and "OOPS! Did we have sex???"
