Sci-Fi Amazon’s Warhammer 40,000 series | Henry Cavill

Not too familiar with the property but happy for Cavill!

I don't know much on 40k either, anyone have any suggestions where to start for lore? I always hear about the lore and would like to read something. Besides a wiki, any suggestions on something to explain the world and maybe some history?

There might be some lore videos on YouTube which could help you out.

Yeah, my knowledge on Warhammer is rather paltry so I started watching some lore vids on YouTube. So far I would recommend Luetin09 and Baldermort.

I love Warhammer so very happy to hear about this.

Oh man now it's official I am even more excited. Hope we see Chaos somehow they were my favourite in Titan Legions. Though if I get to see a live action Imperator Titan at some point in my life I will die happy.

I imagine it will start a bit smaller though with maybe Space Marine/Space Hulk type stuff?

I just started reading the Eisenhorn books… he would be kinda perfect for that role. It might feel kinda similar to Geralt but… let’s face it, Cavill doesn’t seem like he cares about being typecast.

The Eisenhorn books are probably also the best entry point for people who don't know the universe. Dan Abnett (who is a brilliant writer, including stuff for Marvel and DC) introduces the lore stuff at a slow enough pace, while maintaining a fast paced hard boiled, detective noir style story, with everything from roof top chases to demonic battles.

Henry might want to play a Space Marine or a Primarch, but frankly they aren't much in the character department. A human is a much better idea.

A little while back, Games Workshop announced that a TV series based on Eisenhorn books was in development; I wonder if that morphed into this. I’m not far into the series yet but I agree that it feels like a good entry point into Warhammer.

I hope people don't massively complain about the show's politics and it being pro-fascism.

IMHO none of the factions in Warhammer are "the good guys." And I see the work as politically satirical a lot of the time.

Plus it's a work of fiction. We should be able to explore these themes in fictional worlds.

That all went a bit quiet, but you’re right… it could be part of what Cavill is planning. It sounds like they want a 40k shared universe… and for once that’s actually the right way to go about it. There are so many shows and movies that can be made. Just as long as they start strong, it could become a genuine mainstream entertainment juggernaut. It’s certainly very, very different from anything that’s come before it.

I’ve read or listened to audiobooks for a fair number of Warhammer 40k (and Warhammer Fantasy) titles in the past. May well go through them again and pick up any good recent ones to get into the mood for this again.

I love having a combined universe for both 40K and Fantasy and it’s one of the reasons I bought so many books and other media. Also got a whole bunch of Fantasy armies. Never actually played with them but got them for how cool they look all combined :D (and theoretically to help motivate me to write and finish the books I started).

In this case the combined universe would be a completely natural thing unlike some past instances where it has been forced after seeing the success of the MCU. As you say, if it is to work, they need to come out of the gate very strong. It may be a little more limited due to the adult nature of the content depending how far they go with that.

That’s another thing I wonder if they’ll attempt to include in this shared universe - the more traditional fantasy Warhammer stuff. I don’t know that they need to but I suppose if it really takes off, we could see that series adapted as well.

You mean to do WF separately to 40K right? I would LOVE that.

Yeah, hypothetically, it would be a spinoff series that doesn’t really connect to 40K aside from some broad stuff like the Old Ones and Chaos.

I love 40K but Fantasy is my ultimate baby. I was massively into the Fighting Fantasy gamebooks series (and Lone Wolf) as a kid and Warhammer was the natural follow on to that. The series also had sci-fi stories so 40K coming from that also fit, and then 40K became the more popular one over time. The founders of Fighting Fantasy Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone went on to found Games Workshop so a lot of the lore for FF and Warhammer is very similar. If we started getting successful and high quality film universes in both 40K and Fantasy I would be over the moon!

Good luck with that... a lot of people want to be heard and validated and a section of the media love to promote such division.. a few can't separate fact from fiction

I am definitely more of a sci-fi guy than fantasy. Space Marine/Hulk and Titan Legions would be my go to for WH40K so hopefully Cavill and the producers feel the same.

I used to literally spend full days in Games Workshop in town despite having hundreds of figures at home. I made a lot of money selling the figures in eBay a few years ago.

Arent the Orks essentially the most neutral with them just wanting to fight for the lols?

Pretty much. They were created by the old ones as weapons, and are now basically the comic relief of the 40k world. They're not evil, just really, really like killing stuff, because they were made to do it.
