Well I have to say it is a 10/10. Was it perfect? No. But it did just such an amazing job of emersing me into the story and the world. I thought it looked good, but the trailer never blew me away either. But it was strong and powerful as it was just 2 1/2 hours of pure engrossing storytelling and I learned what made these guys tick and why they did the things that they did. Another charismatic and memorable performance from Denzel Washington and am ore nuanced but introvertedly complex and subtle performance from Crowe (after the much broader turn in 3:10 to Yuma).

I mean I just came out of the theater struggling to grasp with everything I had just seen and was completley taken into the movie's world (which Scott's best movies in Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator, Black Hawk Down and the director's cut of Kingdom of Heaven do) and is probably his best movie since Gladiator.

Simply amazing.

This movie was okay. 7/10. It's no Donnie Brasco or Scarface, but it's enjoyable. It should have focused more on Franks uprising though. I felt there were a lot of things the movie didn't show us.

Anything is better than Scarface. The only redeemable thing about it is Pacino in my opinion.

Not a classic... it really didnt explain how Frank became Frank.... Armand Asante and Josh Brolin probably gave the best performances

What do you have against Scarface?

I'm sadly not the biggest Scarface fan ether

he pretty much is one of the most myopic characters to ever grace the big screen, he doesn't change, he doesn't evolve it is the same thing over and over....however the movie has some redeeming qualities to it, I love how they do the underground of miami, I thought that was real nice...but the character himself...b.s. only as popular as he is cause of rappers

It was like a throwback to the old 70s movies, like French Connection and Shaft. Loved it. I may have to go see it again.

I def think its about 3000 times better than scarface, and do think it is a bit better movie than donnie brasco too

I wanna say 8.5/10, yet I've noticed that I've never given a film a perfect score, so maybe I'll jump it up to 9/10. :D OMG, the cast in the movie was unbelievable, wasn't it?! I'm still trying to wrap my brain around it. A blend of musicians with unknowns with veterans with well-established newcomers.

Denzel Washington, Russel Crowe, Carla Gugino, Clarence Williams III, Ruby Dee, Yul Vasquez, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Idris Elba, Josh Brolin, Jon Polito, Cuba Gooding, Jr, Joe Morton, Armand Assante, Ruben Santiago-Hudson, Roger Smith, and Ted Levine. Along with TI, Common, RZA, and appearances by Fab 5 Freddy and Anthony Hamilton.

Trailers that have been shown in front of American Gangster prints:
-Wanted
-Charlie Wilson's War
-Sweeney Todd
-National Treasure 2
-Pride and Glory
-Atonement
-Jumper
-Vantage Point
-I Am Legend
-The Great Debaters
-Welcome Home, Roscoe Jenkins

At our theater, each American Gangster had a combination of five or six of these trailers. I think the only ones attached to all of them were Wanted and Jumper.

BTW, does anyone remember what Joe Morton's character, Mr. Williams relationship was to Lucas and Bumpy Johnson? I can't quite remember.

I don't get why people feel the need to compare it ot Scarface. Scarface was big, broad and incredibly silly. This movie was much more low key and relied on telling a storyline that felt real. For that I'd take it over Scarface anyday.

I also think it is better put together than Donnie Brasco as well, but not by much.

not bad at all. I give it about an 8/10. it's not great, nothing special, but it's still pretty cool.

It was a great film and did a good job of presenting an enthralling story that didn't glamorize the lifestyle of Lucas and his family. It also didn't romaticize the period either, it kept it real in the depiction of corruption and junkies(which I would have liked to see more of). I just wish they had been more accurate in the appearance of Nicky Barnes and expanded on the roles of Frank's family more.

Amen
Glad to see someone who actually gets Scarface's intention

I thought this movie was fantastic, not as good as the first two Godfather films but better than Scarface and on par with Goodfellas. Excellent cast who all put on great performances. The opening scene really set the tone of the entire movie. I think this is one of Ridley Scott's best!

9/10

I thought this movie was really good. The acting from everyone was great and just how the whole movie felt. Now I really knew nothing about Frank Lucas before this so everything was new to me and it's crazy what he did in order to that "Blue Magic". The one thing I didn't really like was how they kept on showing Russel Crowe's characters family problems. To me it didn't really have any effect on the movie at all and seemed to just have been thrown in.

Best movie Ive seen this year 8/10 (I rate hard)

I've watched way too much Sopranos lately, because Frank Lucas started to remind me of Tony about halfway in.

I give it A 8/10 . I would have liked to see more focus on Frank Lucas and his story. I loved Josh Brolin as bad cop Trupo .He stole some scenes for me .I felt like we seen characters like Russell Crowe's before in these type films so I think we could seen less of his story to focus on Frank Lucas ,acting RC wise was solid though. As was Denzel.

i would of liked to see more of cuba gooding's character/

Frank Lucas changed about as much as Antonio Montana did so I don't see your point. I can't really see how that makes the movie bad either or how rappers made it popular. The only time I've seen scarface associated with rappers is from the rapper himself who named himself after Scarface. And he's not popular at all. If anything the popularity of the film spawned from so many pop culture references in tv shows and movies. Specifically the "say hello to my little friend" line.

Haven't see the film but let me ask you guys this;

Does Denzel as an actor become Frank, or is he just acting like 'Denzel'..?

A few critics are saying that Denzel is just acting the same as he acts in all his movies; whereas actors like Crowe and Bale 'become' the characters they're playing.

Did you guys get that vibe?

how does denzel act like "denzel"? and i wouldn't qualify losing 30 pounds for a role becoming a chractyer(bale).

i doubt denzel acts like a corrupt cop everyday:huh:
