I mean in mannerism. His demeanor, the walk, the smoothness,ect....

I think he does a great job here, but he's such a big star that throughout the movie I thought "Denzel is the Kingpin of Harlem" and not "Frank Lucas is the Kingpin of Harlem." It's a terrific performance but some may think it's Denzel playing himself, but as GAH said, that doesn't make much sense.

When you've got A-list actors like Denzel Washington and have seen them in so many different films, you will always think of them above the character, unfortunately. That's really what the critics mean. The only time that doesn't usually work that way is when the actor looks completely different and is using a different voice from movie to movie like Johnny Depp or Gary Oldman.

The only way critics wouldn't have thought of "Denzel" when seeing this movie is if he was wearing dreadlocks, a beard, and using a rasta accent.

The only movie he's been in where his demeanor is close to this one would be Training Day, but he's far more of the cool, calm, collected Gangster who blows a fuse when he's really angry in this movie. Remember, he's usually the good guy so this is definitely differently from most of his stuff.

Bale and Crowe have accents, so of course they will sound different whenever they take on a role that doesn't have a brit/aussie accent. Denzel does the same as Jack Nicholson, as Al Pacino, as Tom Hanks. For the most part it is them doing what they do best.

The ComingSoon.net Box Office Report has been updated with studio estimates for the weekend and the Weekend Warrior has a full write-up and analysis of the weekend. Be sure to check back on Monday for final figures based on actual box office.

This weekend, director Ridley Scott's R-rated crime drama American Gangster (Universal) proved that putting two bonafide box office stars into a movie with a strong premise can get a lot of people into theatres, and Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe helped American Gangster win the weekend over DreamWorks' animated Bee Movie from the mind of Jerry Seinfeld, which had to settle for second place despite opening in 900 more theatres.

After an impressive opening day of nearly $16 million, American Gangster grossed an estimated $46.3 million over the weekend, averaging more than $15,000 per theatre, while Bee Movie didn't quite make its projected $40 million, instead averaging less than $10,000 in 3,928 theatres to gross $39.1 million its opening weekend.

Haven't see the film but let me ask you guys this;

Does Denzel as an actor become Frank, or is he just acting like 'Denzel'..?

A few critics are saying that Denzel is just acting the same as he acts in all his movies; whereas actors like Crowe and Bale 'become' the characters they're playing.

Did you guys get that vibe?

I'll put it this way, Russell does get Ritchie down pat. But if you have ever heard Frank Lucas speak and the attitude he has, Denzel got some of it, but it is still Denzel.

it deserves it. this movie was awesome, and denzel was ****in awesome in it, when he blows a fuse, the man blows a fuse!!! he beat the **** out of that dude while he was in the piano, hahaha awesome scene. he should get an opscar nod. damn denzel was f'in great in the role he even beat the **** out his brother.

10/10(just awesome) i feel sorry for thecharacter frank. dude went from having some money to an empire back to rags with nothing left. his mom and his wife left him.and his bro(the baseball one) messed up his life by getting involved.

frank didn't wnat the dope to get absorbed by the clothes. so he wanted them all naked.

No way Denzel gets nominated best actor this time! The acting was good but I expected alot more from him!

i thought it was good but his performance in training day was better. i did like how his character didnt go over the top

he should get nominated, he was bad ass as frank. plus so far he has no competition at the moment. don't know how you expected alot more given thats what all the script gave him. In the context of the script and storytelling he did a phenonmenal job with the role.

I keep hearing that Daniel Day-Lewis in There Will Be Blood is pretty much a lock for this year's Best Actor Oscar, and when it is HIM you're up against, competition really couldn't get any worse.

That was his nephew.

This movie is awesome. The only ones I felt bad for was his brothers & cousins because they only got involved due to the fact that Frank was & that one nephew would have had a future with the Yankees.

bump, i know more people mustve seen this flick.

Saw it last night and enjoyed every moment of it. I love the way how the film portrays the parallel lives of Frank and Richie, where Frank is the caring family man with a career in crime, Richie being the straight as nails honest cop but a sh**ty husband and father. And it was awesome to Frank's sudden outbursts of anger. The one near the end when he's talking with Crowe's character, where he just knocks away stuff from the table really caught me by surprise.

I knew that with Denzel and Crowe starring, and Ridley Scott directing, it was already going to be good, but the film was great. I was surprised to some of the people in the film (mainly Common and RZA). Other than Denzel and Russel, my favorite performance was from Chiwetel Ejiofor. The film was probably the best that I've seen this year, so far.

Btw, I'm glad that Carla Gugino's fine ass was in this. :o

Other than Denzel and Russel, my favorite performance was from Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Chiwetel is a great actor. But the best performance in the whole flick for me was probably Ruby Dee.

For how much she had, Ruby Dee was great, and ditto to Chiwetel. That man really knows how to pick his films. Most of his prior films were great, too.
